Think...? So you do not know surely, or have not tested it with a SCSI card...?

SCSI may be 'old-fashioned', but it is reliabe and still useful! And there is even a manufacturer (Dawicontrol) who still produces a SCSI controller (DC-2976 UW) which is compatible with the driver of AmigaOS 4.1. This PCI card is 5V only.

It should be limited to a CPU-driven max throughput speed of 133 MB/s, which is clearly better than the old-age typical ATA drive, however I would not recommend to use PCI, nowadays, to connect any storage media controller. You'd prefer to use current SATA interface for this purpose.

On my X1000 I have a Delock eSATAp adapter connected to one of the extra internal SATA connectors for fast backups to an external hard-disk. Because the X5000 only has 2 SATA connectors I need to know if there a SATA card that works with the X5000. Since the X5000 will need a video card, network card and sound card; will there be an empty slot that will support a SATA card?

Yes, you can install a PCI SATA card (most of us do already). Unfortunately, U-Boot is configured to access only the on-board SATA controller, so you can't load Kickstart modules from a system partition on a PCI card controller.

Once the system is booted and running, of course, there is no restriction.

Oh well... This is the first clear flaw in X5000 I hear :(. It will complicate the use of Linux distros as it is always wise to have them on a separate hard disk. And it means that you cannot cold boot from a SCSI disk, either... Sigh.

Would it be possible to configure U-Boot differently in future, or is this limitation permanent...?

As a quick work-around, is it possible to use and boot from SATA disks via USB-port (using an USB-SATA adapter)?
(Please don't say the USB Stack is too rudimentary for that...;)

Gregor

Why on earth would you like to have Linux distro on a SCSI disk ?!

You need to investigate how Linux boots from uboot.
The kernel and dtb are loaded from sdcard, USB device,DVD,harddrive or TFPT .
Once the kernel loads it can boot linux from any device on any controller once the controller and device are supported by the kernel .

Ok, not too complicated... Untill my own leaking memory prevents me to remember where I stored that crucial USB Stick needed for booting .

Anyway, it would be best if everything needed to boot could be on the same disk. Let's hope this will be possible some day also for controllers/disks in the PCI bus.

I mainly use TFTP for booting on Sam460ex so the two files needed to boot are on another machine.
Second option is USB. For the USB I keep disk images of the drive.Saved in dropbox .
These can be written to a new USB drive from Linux,AmigaOS or Windows with no problem.

What SATA card do you use? So we know what works.

I am 95% sure I will get an X5000. I would like more SATA ports to backup my main drive/partitions. Not so much for booting other OSes. I also thought about just an external USB drive.

I asked on amigans.net, but no one actually knows:

Can the X5000 do dual video cards? I would like to do a double wide (3840x1080) screen, but doesn't seem feasible the way screens work. How would you have TextEditorScreen open on monitor 2, Workbench on monitor 1, XYZ screen on 2, etc? Amiga-N/M to switch mouse to other screen.

Same as Xenic, are there enough ports for 1 or 2 video cards, sound card, ethernet card, SATA card?

SATA cards:
I am using an SiI3112, but SiI3512 also works. I don't know of anyone using an SiI3114 at the moment.

Dual monitors:
I haven't tried it myself, but you should be able to use the same dual-display card trick that is claimed to work on the X-1000. I never had any success with it myself, but it's not a hardware issue, simply that no one has yet refactored the display subsystem to support two display controllers.

The two PCIe-16 slots might be too close together to fit two big (thick) graphics cards, but there is a single PCIe-4 slot between them. You can easily fit two 5450s.

The complete connector layout is this:

1. PCIe-16
2. PCIe-4
3. PCIe-16
4. PCIe-4
5. PCIe-4
6. PCI
7. PCI

I have a PCIe sound card, 3112 SATA card and RTL8139 network card in the last three slots.

The SII3114 works fine in my machine.

One of the PCIe-4' is the Xorro slot for Xena chip support. Right now there only public product is a high speed serial card developed by Lyle Hazelwood. AmigaKit sells a project board for development.

My machine has an R7, PCIe SoundCard, PCI Network card. I want to put in a SCSI card for ready classic stuff :)

What model of PCIe soundcard do you have? It's already fully supported?

PCI Sil3114 is working on X5K...It is compatible with both AmigaOS4 and Linux..
PCI Sil3512 is compatible with AmigaOS4 but had some problems on Linux

For Linux I have a PCI-Express Marvell 9215 chipset SATA card..But there is no driver for this chipset on OS4.

For sound I have a Envy 24HT PCI-E sound card and for network it is RTL8169 PCI.

I have a RadeonHD R7 265 which is supported by Warp3D Nova. It is a big card and consumes two slots of space.

So you can easily fit

R7 265
Envy 24HT sound PCI-E
Marvell 9215 PCI-E Sata
Sil3512 PCI Sata
RTL8169 Ethernet

With only 2 PCI slots and the need to have a sound card, network card and SATA card, I need to know if there are PCIe sound cards, network cards and SATA cards that work with the X5000. For example, the "Amiga on the Lake" is only offering the PCI SoundWave 5.1 sound card and a free PCI RTL 8139 card. I already have 3 PCI sound cards and would prefer a PCIe SATA card. My second choice would be to buy yet another sound card for a PCIe slot.

EDIT: I see that SinanG mentions that Envy 24HT works but haven't yet found one for less that $200. I don't need a sound studio; are there any cheaper PCIe sound cards that will work in the X5000?

Would it be possible to connect the second X5000 SATA to an external SATA adapter and swap between an external DVD/RW and hard drive instead of using an internal DVD/RW drive??

The SATA cards supported under AmigaOS 4.1 are all pci versions.
The Pciex1 sound cards supported under AmigaOS 4.1 are the CMI8738 and the Envyht24 .

You may be able to use an external USB DVD and free up an onboard SATA connection .
