| UPDATE:
Unsurprisingly, eBay have sided with the buyer. They have already refunded the full amount back to him. No consideration whatsoever for the fact he still has my A4000.
Today I have reported him to the Police. _________________ Matt |

| I've had this scam pulled on me with a much less expensive auction. Nonetheless, I fought with eBay and PayPal on the issue. I worked with a rep over the phone and it was very frustrating. The rep said I should have never accepted the return, but hindsight is 20/20 and like you I was just trying to be a "nice" seller.
In the end they credited me back the price of my item to keep me happy, but officially I believe they sided with the buyer. They assured me they would go after the buyer because they believed my story, but I somehow doubt they did anything after they hung up with me.
It's unfortunate that they always seem to side with the buyer, even when it's an obvious scam. It was interesting to read that link earlier in the thread where eBay sided with the seller, but I think that must be very rare.
I would push this as far as you can, file a report with the police, etc. This guy is obviously scum.
Best of luck. |

| I work in online retail. The police are useless when it comes to fraud. You phone up your local police station they say "where was the crime committed?" You explain the guy is in x and they say "you need to call x police". Call x police and they say "where are you calling from?" You explain and they say "you need to call your local police". Eventually someone will palm you off to Action Fraud, who take up to 2-3 months to decide if they are going to pass on the information for the police who will do nothing with it anyway.
There was a news report some years ago that the police do not have the resources to follow card fraud cases. Not only they are not fighting this crime, they are shouting from the rooftops "commit card fraud we won't prosecute, we won't even come and see you".
Example of how rubbish the police etc. are.
Where it all started going wrong - it hasn't improved believe me.
I almost delivered some products once to a fraudster. Once I had realised I stopped the goods leaving, called the local police, fraudster's local police, action fraud etc. I told them where the people were expecting the goods and on what day and was told it can take x weeks to speak to the police who may or may not investigate. BUT THE GUY IS AT x ADDRESS TOMORROW, GO AND ARREST HIM! One officer told me off for losing my rag. They are dumb as hell and are basically tax collectors for the HM Treasury now - hiding behind trees with speed guns, waiting for some sucker doing 35 in a 30 to be made to feel like he's actually killed someone.
Sorry you have been scammed but unless you can plead your case with Paypal, you are unlikely to see your money. Alternative is to go the the guy's house armed with a baseball bat and demand your computer back - which has probably been mutilated by now.

I am glad I live in Italy where Police has a Postal Crime Department that take care of internet frauds too, no matter in what place of competence scam originated...
They have no powers with frauds originating abroad, but sure I can file reports with fraudsters and scammers in my country. Also they have many other powers for example to block vision of malicious porn sites from Italy territory or denouncing pedoes to interpol. Last edited by Raffaele on 21-Feb-2017 at 03:08 AM.

Sorry to hear about your luck. How people like this can have a clear conscience doing this kind of thievery is beyond me. I am using Amibay more and more to hopefully avoid issues such as yours.
Let's hope the Wheel of Karma runs him over (twice) :)

| What a beautiful machine, I'm sorry to hear it was (basically) stolen from you.
I feel really sorry for you. I would definitely file a police report and take any legal steps available to me if I were in this situation. Please let us know if there are any further developments. |

The buyer trying to abuse forum rules to suppress information on his criminal activities rather than make ammends? Thankfully the mods are having none of it. |

Thank you for your words of support. If there is one thing that has made me feel a little bit better about this whole situation, it is seeing that others also share the outrage that such a thing could happen.

I was a bit puzzled there could be abuse reports being made. I started this thread to warn other potential victims of this type of fraud. And in particular warn those contemplating buying an A4000 from someone from the Isle of Man to double-check that they are not being sold stolen property. (Anyone in doubt please get in touch privately.)
I can think of only one person who'd wish to close down this discussion. With that in mind I shall be a bit more discrete about what I say from now on. Don't want to show my hand, as it were. But rest assured I'm not giving up on this. The buyer knows how to contact me if he has any complaints!! _________________ Matt |

This happened to me as well with a very loaded A2500. SE situation, sent back old junk PC. eBay sodded with the buyer. In the end I got it back, but not working and not completely what was sent. I reported it to my local police, the buyers police and submitted both reports to ebay. They quickly stepped in once they were involved. I'd do the same if I were you. _________________ I do motherboard recaps and other enhancement/upgrades! Visit. www.acill.com or PM for a quote. |

I'd pay him a visit if possible. Had the same thing happen to me once upon a time and that's exactly what I did.
The guy was so nervous he couldnt think straight and barely said a word. Just returned my belongings and apologized sheepishly.
As for this Mark Steel character, Ive seen him mentioned on facebook just recently a few times. The guy has been copyright striking Amiga based Youtube channels. Near as I can tell he's doing it because he has issues with people making money from Youtube and buying Amiga stuff for their channels with any money they make. His insinuation was that it's immoral.
I saw some copy and pastes of his conversations with the people he'd been copyright striking too. For some reason there was pictures of him pretending to be overseas at certain museums too, but the places he had pictures of weren't where he claimed and some of the people knew the places in the pictures (ie. how it was known he wasnt where he claimed). I think the lying about his current location was part of a scam ("I cant do it now, Im not in the county" type thing).
Guy sounds somewhere between a complete nut job, and an asshole.
The posts appeared aimed at people who are familiar with the guy, so I had to read between the lines/fill in some gaps, but Im pretty sure this is all accurate.
p.s. point to this port isn't to slander, but just to let the poster know this bloke is already known to be less than honest. Probably won't help to pass on this info., but it definitely can't hurt. Last edited by fishy_fis on 16-Feb-2022 at 07:10 AM.

| Most people here seem to think that Isle of Man is “same country” as England. It isn’t, it governs itself (and has done so pretty much since viking times.) Neither is it part of UK. Isle of Man isn’t even a monarchy, the king/queen of UK is not king/queen of Isle of Man, but instead hold the title Lord of Mann, “chairman” of the House of Keys, the local parliament.
Likewise, police forces of Isle of Man are not UK police. It might be an idea to contact them directly, rather than going through UK police.
