@clusteruk

So true! And NewTek is a nice company and supported Amiga as long as they could. They are way too busy in 2017 to support it.

@DrProcton

LightWave 3D included on the ISO from DiscreetFX does require the Video Toaster hardware, you are correct. Lightwave 3D is still sold today as commercial software. Sadly not for Amiga but you can buy used copies of LW 3D stand alone (Amiga version) on eBay and other places online. While the Amiga version is old it's still very powerful for it's era of time. Of course the latest version for OS X and Windows has many more features and is worth buying.

@DiscreetFX

It's nearly impossible to find a copy of lightwave stand-alone for amiga in ebay. So it would be very good if newtek decided to release a cd version to sell - if they consider amiga-lightwave still a commercial product. The alternative could be to release it for free (as for tvpaint) as a gift for the community..could be a publicity for the company I think.You think Is it possible to contact the ceo of newtek (that compears in viva amiga film if I'm not wrong) and convince to do that??

@all

I would pay for the latest Lightwave version on Amiga. And I think others will.

It is a good point but they are an incredibly busy company and I think it is just a time thing. To be fair they moved away from Amiga so long ago that a lot of staff know little about them, however there are still engineers who are nuts about Amiga

Too bad we let it happening this way bad.
In the recent past (2000) they made good PCI Videotoaster cards that were both NTSC and PAL compatible and running on PCI 33Mhz so perfectly usable with AmigaONE machines. If only we had convinced them to made Videotoaster 5 software available for Amigas NG too, due to the fame of Amiga as videotitling machine they had sold thousands of cards and Phase5 had sold thousands AmigaOnes in early 2000s...

DiscreetFX could had convinced them but they were focused in supporting only Videotoasters for Classic Amigas.

Unfortunately Newtek switched to PCIe BUS in the end, following evolutions of Wintel Machines with Videotoasters now supporting HDTV, accomplishing digital convergence of all Tv systems worldwide (bye bye PAL and NTSC) so actual Amigas could not support VT 6 and new versions of it anymore no in managing graphic resolutions neither in BUS expansion cards bandwidth, until SAM440 and AmigaX1000 come out and also new graphic card drivers were released (just only last year). But nowadays PC are enough cheap and powerful and the too expensive underpowered Amigas are not anymore known as TV productions machines in the professional market.
If I could had received a buck for any occasion Amiga lost in the past I were a rich man now.

It would be an inexpensive move from newtek to release the latest amiga-lightwave (as a downloadable purchase, for example). With the vampire card progress it could be a very useful tool even nowdays! Is there a way to convince them to do it? Or maybe discreetfx could take the rights to distribute it? Or with a kickstarter thing?

for their own peril? i trust a company like that relies rather on some market research instead of private phantasies some individuals might approach them with.

@wawa

But the ceo and the "oldies" in the company are big amiga fans (they appeared even in viva -amiga film!). And they have done it in the past releasing tvpaint for free. It is obvious that the amiga would not change newtek future, but with an almost zero-cost operation they can make some people of a small community aware of their presence (maybe some amiga user will buy their latest lightwave release?)

+1, even though I have a Toaster in my 4000 to run lightwave I find the position of the Toaster card causes heating issues (especially as the IndiAGA is literally touching the Toaster) so rather than having a very big dongle to run LW I'd happily buy the latest stand alone LW that Newtek has

@DrProcton

they may be amiga fans, even though it doesnt mean they are amigaone fans, but they need to think i terms of business. posting a (complex) application to another platform with no product-sustainable user base is not almost zero cost. even a re-releasing an old discontinued version is certainly not zero-cost. think of logistics, redoing dongles, cds, manuals, support they are then to provide, distribution, stuff like that. it might also be a image risk for their professional status if they associated themselves with a dead or un-professional platform. no other serious company is doing this, why would they?

you have a spare 1000$ to spend? well, its your decission, but since it would be spent on something technically useless today, wouldnt it be better to invest in something more sensible for the platform you support?

lol talk about about picking a sentence and twisting it out of context, the latest 2015 version of LW costs $695 that you can buy right now so what do you think that NewTek will sell us the 'latest' 68k standalone AMIGA version (circa 1995) for?

@klx300r

i paid almost a thousand for my v9 pc version years ago. so you not only demand of newtek to release old software, but you want to dictate the pricing along your expectations? or have you actually asked, what would that cost?

@wawa

???? demand..dictate seriously

if DiscreetFX is asking on our behalf if they would sell/ release the latest 68k standalone Amiga version to us Amiga users how in the heck is that demanding or dictacting If they choose to sell it like many other companies have sold their 'retro' products nowadays or even release it as good will gesture to the community it's their prerogative.

@wawa

What's your problem? First: we're not talking about an amigaone version but the 68k version released in the nineties. No one would dictate nothing. Everyone with a little research can download a pirated copy of the latest amiga version of lughtwave without problem, so a release from newtek (or maybe discreetfx) is only a way to keep it commercially viable and legal (for newtek the amiga-lightwave is considered commercial anymore?). If they eventually decide to make it free it would be a gift to the community. The reputation of newtek will not be disintegrated by that move, I will assure you of that.
