So just been watching the news about the NHS in the uk being infected by a virus / ransomware and thinking this is going to happen more and more in this ever connected world.

However it made me think, that I never got a virus on the Amiga, I know they do exist and just wonder what was the worst virus for our fav machine, has there ever been a patched to fix a security flaw in Amigaos life, i Know its far from being a very secure Os so just wondered about it.

@amigang

There are no viruses because nobody really cares about Amiga...

AmigaOS would be piece of cake for such threats (no memory protection or other security features).

There used to be many. Had to have Virus Checker, VirusZ and others.

Obscurity is a good thing or how do You say it?

Can we bank safely with OS4?

@amigang

There is no "truly secure" running system out there, all good security practices are about buying yourself time and not being the easiest target.
If it takes too long, or it's too difficult, 99.9% of hackers and bots won't bother with you. They'll pick someone else.

As far as the Amiga goes, it would be easier than most systems these days, if people could be bothered with it.

I think the biggest flaw was the 1.3 disk based L:Disk-Validator. If it was infected, a simple disk insert could activated the malicious code.

AFAIK from 2.0 this function moved to to Kickstart and that fixed this vulnerability.

interesting, that was more the point of this thread, not to really point out that AmigaOS is not very secure, I just wounder more in the good old days of Amiga what was the biggest security threat / virus that hit our fav platform.

Had a quick look into today, and there are quite a few for Amiga
http://www.vht-dk.dk/amiga/desc/virus.htm

have to laugh at the custom guru them coder make
http://www.vht-dk.dk/amiga/diverse/screenshot/ahc2.htm

and the flip your screen one is quite inventive,
http://www.vht-dk.dk/amiga/diverse/screenshot/ap.htm
have to get a mirror to unbug that one.

Well there big difference between AmigaOS and Windows.
Windows comes pre-installed with bunch of services you might not know about, do not need, but is a paternal security risk. This service is one of many ways a virus can get into your PC.

So on windows it's easy for things sneak into your computer with you doing anything.

On AmigaOS you almost have not thing installed by default, as you add services to your Amiga the risk increases.

Windows has a firewall by default to prevent, nasty software to access the services that is always running.
AmigaOS does not, but there are no network services running.

Windows has scheduled task, that its easy add script to, and often used to run evil scripts, AmigaOS does not have cron, or scheduled task, so scrips can't be run as easily.

Windows has registry where you can easily modify what programs run when you do different things, like plugin in USB stick or CD, AmigaOS does not have that, so there is way for virus to be spread by just inserting a USB stick.

AmigaOS has data types where you define program to run tool types, this can be used to trigger scripts and viruses, but unlike windows, this has to be programs not scripts.
Key loggers seams to exists on windows, key loggers are also easy to write for AmigaOS,

Another popular way to spread viruses is by including falls PDF files or pictures in e-mail, sadly there might be a security risk on Amiga OS as well. While unlikely, because AmigaOS is not popular OS.

Amiga viruses used to be spread by being in boot block of floppy disks, floppy disks are not so popular anymore, another way to spread files was by replacing a handler in L: that was used by the disk doctor on OFS pre AmigaOS2.0 I think. This no longer required.

Another way viruses spread by modifying programs, adding extra hunks to the programs.

When you install programs no matter what OS, there is a risk that it includes more than you bargained for.

On AmigaOS4.x there is no virus protection software, AmigaOS3.x you have VirusZ and some other virus protection software.

Wrong. Roadshow comes with ipfilter firewall. I don't remember if it's enabled by default or you have to enable it yourself and know how to do it. There's Granite also.

@amigang

There's a hospital in my country that is reported to be a victim of ransomware. Locking up patient records and delaying operations. I wonder how the hackers would like it if they were due for a serious operation and someone hacked the hospital they was in? Bunch of digital terrorists, they probably wouldn't care like the rest of them, with no care for any life. They actually reported it as a computer virus in a hospital.

I had the AFFE virus on my A1200 infecting files. Thankfully I killed it off before it went haywire. It looks like it was designed to destroy a floppy but could have easily destroyed a HD. Now, in context, for an Amiga to be infected by ransomware the bad code would need to be executed somehow. Directly by the user would be easiest. But, it would be obvious something was wrong, since it would take ages to read in file blocks, encrypt, then write back. Both CPU and HD would bog down.

Perhaps it could be done from a web browser. But only if the Amiga browser allows write access to files on the HD from JS for instance. Which makes no sense, since why does any browser need access to system or user files? A file downloading site would use such features. But these things tend to be broken on OS4 and any PPC OS like Linux or OSX. I've only seen it work on PC and ARM hardware. So perhaps not having a popular little-endian CPU is another passive defense we have.

I read lots of people were fooled by downloading a bogus Wimdows 10 updater. So perhaps a hacker doesn't need to do anything fancy like finding an open port to upload a virus through or executing evil JS in someones browser. They just get them to download a program and run it directly the old fashioned way.

Pirating is a good way to spread a virus. Upload a fake torrent of some popular game or program. Can work like an STD.

True, but it would be more useful and more widely used if there were a firewall GUI. I think Miami had a GUI for setting the filters.

@amigang

lucky you as I've gotten more than my fair share of viruses going back to my Amiga 1000 days and the latest happened a few weeks ago on my Amiga 4000 which I posted a thread
here about.

@Mr-Z

Thanks. Have 2000+ disks and they might have had some viri. Usually just fun.

Made some boot thingies too. Harmless demos if fitted in the disk.

Oh they were the times. Not telling any more..

@PR

The link @amigang posted (VHT) is superb.
Not sure if it runs without struggling on AmigaOS4 nowadays, but back when i switched to NG i used their program to check *every* single disk and software i had...found a lot of beasties still hidden in some programs.

It can also remove most of the virii without killing the whole program.

I'd give it a try.

These disks are 3M and neatly labeled, mostly done by ourself. Works.

Some demos that have never been released.

AmigaFuture got some animations. Check Them out.

Action Replay and the track 0 was just for fun. Removed all the others, saved some crackers boot thingies.

No real viruses. Some where, removed.

Documentation it's there for the reading....

SYS:Documentation/Roadshow/IP-Filter

IAfirewall is not for protecting other people, it's for protecting you so if someone else doesn't know about it wh cares?

It's easier to use your routers nat firewall to some extent, but more advance protection *is* available if needed, if paerhaps you don't have router, could do with a GUI for the less technically minded I expect.

@NutsAboutA

firewall on Windsow is only sofware you need a hardware firewall to stop virus / trojans / ransomware but if the programmer of the virus or trojans as your i p adress no fire wall soft or hard will not stop it like he could send you a email from one of your friends or bank or a well known site but it come from him or her not any good sites you known
