@intangybles

Sounds a lot of fiddly tweaking work. Just sell the ALICE already or leave the rest of us to our Vampires, AmigaOnes and Classics. Emulation is just too much effort for not much fun IMHO.

The main advantage of ALICE laptop is that it is a multi boot and all-in-one machine which works out-of-the-box. ALICE includes a boot selector able to boot the laptop into the latest AmiKit X (AmigaOS3.x) or AmigaOS4.1FE almost directly (it boots to hidden Linux distro first and then the emulation is launched). It can also boot into regular Windows or Linux. An older video of ALICE booting into AmiKit X is here: https://youtu.be/PjpRGExRIzc

Also thanks to Rabbit Hole integration you can launch and run Linux apps on AmiKit desktop, such as Firefox, Skype and any other. Those Linux apps are Amiga-like skinned so, on first sight, you barely see any difference between Amiga and Linux apps. A video showing Rabbit Hole in action is here: https://youtu.be/CtZY5gVePFE (launching Firefox, Linux prefs, VLC and Steam).

For more recent information please visit ALICE Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/alicelaptop.net/

---

On the other hand, the standalone AmiKit X available from www.amikit.amiga.sk is "just" an app running on Windows, Mac or Linux. While it also includes Rabbit Hole, don't expect any boot or skin magic mentioned above.

@AmiKit

I don't use Facebook. If anyone's got any news post it here or stop peddling something that required no massive engineering challenge to produce but has got bogged down and is fast losing my interest. I like the Firefox 2 skin for Firefox 55.0+ but I don't pretend it's exciting. I also got Blue War III working on ST emulation on my Mac and love it but it's not world changing news. May the powers that be (A-EON?) get the product shipped or will we all please stop ranting about wrappers and extraction layers, most of us simply don't care!

P.S. What we DO care about is having an Amiga laptop. Which will arrive first ALICE or a crowdfunded PPC laptop designed from scratch? I really don't know because ALICE is firmly in the "When it's done" Amiga lethargy zone and meanwhile the Open Source PPC laptop team are taking the initiative and making the unlikely happen!

You know what? I'll see it to believe it. A few prototypes on YouTube and a Trevor D demonstration a whole year ago doesn't cut it. The Acer laptops this is built on will be obsolete by the time all this LINUX stuff is configured on 100 stock machines ready to sell

Oh, yeah and if "Jan" who was (presumably) heavily invested in this project but now sees fit to sell a prototype on eBay without any release date for the commercial product being given then I'm going to assume the project is in trouble whatever 'MyFace' links are posted here. Just saying; poor PR guys!

For other people who think FaceBook is a waste of time, here is the latest 'official' ipdate from 21st August;

Quote:
ALICE 21 August at 08:45 ·

Sorry for the long wait -- too few hands and too many distractions! The plan is to have a version of Alice available to purchase this year at Amiwest. I don't have exact pricing (not my area of expertise), but that should be coming shortly. The basics are the same as discussed in the video below from Amiwest last year. The biggest changes are with the default screen resolution (now 1920x1080 thanks to Toni Wilen's improvements in WinUAE) and the version of Linux used is Ubuntu 16.04 (was 14.04). I'll post some (more) pictures of the current machine later today. Someone also requested a video of it booting, so I'll see if I can accomodate that as well.

I don't even know when Amiwest is/was, there's no price and it's not clear they'll be ANY availability outside of the USA! Thanks for the update but that is not marketing

Also, is this guy posting Alex Perez, "Jan", Ken Lester or the Beta tester Paul Sadik or just some guy that loves Amikit X? It's hard to tell as the Facebook page just seems like an excuse to experiment with pictures of Alice in Wonderland and show boot / splash screens or as a link to old YouTube videos!

@BigD

Out of all the people on this forum, I would think YOU would be the one strong in faith.

That said;

A good while ago I read some of the threads when AEON was working on its X1000. It was called vaporware. Delayed? Yes, but it did appear.

Amikit has always delivered a good product. Does this take time with limited resources? Yes.

Have either mislead us in the past? No. Im sure someone will point out you cant play Crysis or whatnot on X1000, but there is no accounting for unrealistic expectations not grounded in actual promises being made.

Do I belive Jan/Amikit or Trevor/Aeon would tell us if they pulled the plug on the laptop? Yes, and based on the statements so far, they seem to be working on it/hopefully to be made available on AmiWest.

Bingo!

@Overflow

Please note that I already did my job and delivered AmiKit X to ALICE. Questions regarding ALICE should be addressed to A-EON, the owner of the project.

@1Mouse

Hi, just wanted to say that is a nice blog you have put together. I have built several systems similar over the past few years and still can't get the balance the way I am truly happy with! My next attempt is going to be AmiKit X (Linux) as my base... Never happier than when I can bump windows as a base..

Just a thought for you, the system I must say I was happiest with (emulation based laptop) was a Linux base using VirtualBox running Amithlon!

Still may revisit that if the AmiKit project does not work out! Amithlon is not the most flexible..

Any updates?

I feel it is fair to ask since Alex Perez had initially been scheduled to do a presentation at AmiWest 2018, but the spot was lost due to unfortunate delays in other presentations.

Well it's slightly amusing. But it doesn't look like a real song. And where was he singing about Alice?

But I think I meant this song:
