In theory yes. In practice no. My X1000 can use the built in Ethernet through the CFE firmware or in Linux but it isn't supported in OS4. Having sources doesn't mean they can crack the code and get it working normally in OS4. It doesn't always happen.

@Hypex

Actually, if it weren't for Linux, writing video drivers for NG OS' would be much harder.
I'm sure many other drivers are similarly modeled.
And didn't Steve Solie borrow from Linux with his X5000 SATA driver?

Poring Linux drivers to the AmigaOS isn't realistic and documentation is probably better than poking around in source code unless you get stuck. There is probably less requirement for new hardware drivers than you might initially think.

The CPU core in the E6500 is similar to the E5500 and the SOC devices are probably shared between the the P series and T series. That should require minimal compared to switching from the PA6T/SB600 combo to P5020 when it comes to supporting the CPU core, PCIe, USB, SATA and NIC. Radeon HD and Rx cards are support to varying degrees in both AmigaOS and MorphOS. WIFI and power saving features are desirable but not essential so that really leaves audio and if this project goes ahead we'll know what audio chip will be used long before the laptop comes to fruition. If the audio hardware is available in PCI or PCIe format and documentation can easily be obtained then a driver can be ready in time for the rest of the OS.

Yes, they probably are similar.
And the learning curve should be easier after the X5000.

Plus we already have video drivers, and similar drivers will eventually be available for MorphOS.

This Soc might be easier to support than the one used for Tabor.

And MOS could be interested by this laptop too. They can take benefit from the situation and/or help with driver writing. That would make a nice step for them too I believe.

Also, one would hope for some reuse. x5000 uses Freescale/NXP chips, this laptop also uses Freescale/NXP chip, one of the goals at Freescale with Layerscape was reuse of peripherals (SATA, USB, uart, etc. peripherals), so we should be able to expect some OS drivers will work with minor adjustments (memory address, pin muxing sorts of things) to the t2080 in this laptop project.

Now, if they end up using a lot of external items on PCIe connections, then maybe less reuse. But internal SoC stuff will hopefully be available.

Yes, I was, at one time, hopeful that everything would unify around the latter end of the Qorlq line.
The X5000 as a higher end desktop, a lower end board based on the T1xxx series, and something portable.

They all would have had some similarities in regard to the Soc and their drivers would have been related.

But...nothing is ever perfect in this community.

Either way, hey Bill, we got one project started, eh?

They should only really need to add wifi and audio.

And audio can be an SPI or I2C device.

I have mentioned it directly to one of the developers, Mark "Bigfoot" Olsen, primarily because it used an Soc that was his choice out of three I had mentioned as possible pick for a desktop board.
I think he'd like to have one, but that is no guarantee of a port of MorphOS.

About Feanor:

Exploring page of Power Laptop Team Rooster I found that Feanor is already member of the team!

I'll contact him in their forum and will tell him his presence is requested here...

Hopefully he won't face the level of negativity I have here and on the other forums.
After all, we are only exploring another option, and one that a few of us have an interest in.

So far, I've eaten up more time defending this than I've used actually advancing this idea.
We have a knack for insisting that whatever direction our current pursuits are taking is somehow superior to different approaches, without the consideration that as a whole our diversity adds to our strength.

Do you have any suggestions? I would be looking for a "sound card" chip or a DSP via PCIe. If MXM had an audio input for whatever is inside GPU, then that would probably be enough, but I do not believe they have inputs, only outputs as part of the DP protocol.

@utri007

I think this is a worthwhile project. I would contribute. Has anybody thought of this: Considering the dwindling number of living Amiga supporters, how much would each Amiga supporter have to contribute to make this happen?

Fortunately we hope that best part of donations will be made from Linux and generic PowerPC enthusiasts rather than only us Amigans who however are a compact community that will help noteworthy to rhe PPC Laptop Project.

Who cares? It is you the man with wider perspectives. Don't blame others for their narrow point of view.

I'm afraid we are not enough left
With the help of open source advocates which are probably 1000 times more numerous, I hope the goal can be reached.

With some contention (as there always is), the campaign is moving forward.
I think we've appalled the Linux side of the project as to how vociferous we can be, but as a member of the community I'm used to it and rather anticipated it initially.

The things is, passionate discussion is a norm for us, and I'm really fond of you all, so I take it as it comes.
We wouldn't still be here if that wasn't the case.
And eventually we all learn to get on with it.

AND, its not as bad as politics, is it guys?

Almost forgot about the still unsupported Ethernet device on the X1000's motherboard. Wasn't there a driver that was released, and later the owners of X1000's told not to use it? Isn't A-Eon going to ever fix that driver, or have they given up work on it? They seem to be funding so much other software development, I would think that X1000 owners would be more angry and demanding that A-Eon focus on finishing their support for the X1000, instead of spending all their resources and money on other software development, the X5000 & A1222, Libre Office port, and what ever else they are working on.

Isn't it reasonable to ask that A-Eon finish what they started, before they get so spread thin on other projects? I fee sorry for you Hypex, and all other X1000 owners. Not only are you screwed because Hyperion is incapable of completing your free upgrade to AmigaOS4.2, A-Eon seems incapable of completing the Ethernet driver for the X1000 motherboard device.
