@EntilZha

I'd be more than happy to put a bit of money towards it. Just point me at a paypal donate button :)

Voted no myself because I don't have a need for OpenOffice. Final Writer and Final Calc are working just fine and PageStream takes care of my publishing needs. SBase takes care of the database. Hollywood is poised to take care of the presentation stuff. ARexx joins it all together nicely and I have several scripts already doing that. OpenOffice would be cool to have yes, but there are so many other projects out there it is difficult to commit to one so.. er.. boring. Each to their own.

@EntilZha

I voted No, I don?t have time, and I don?t think I have the skills to jump at any thing that big even if I worked in a team, I have lots of own projects I like to work on, and I don?t need OO, at the current date and time, I have Linux some where on one of My PC?s whit KOffice, what I do like to se for AmigaOS is a PowerPoint program so I look at this fun PowerPoint presentations sent from friends.

@ssolie

I did that in the past, too ... never again Amiga apps lack so many features it's almost impossible to do something really usefull. Not to mention the lack of inter-operability.

@thread

I voted "no" because I simply don't have any time for it. Maybe for testing and maybe one or the other module in the future, but not more. Apart from that I consider a usable browser + email client much more important for me.
Anyway, OOo is a great package (especially V2 !) and is an absolute must-have.

Well, I have a Windows PC with OpenOffice installed, but that's not really the point, isn't it ?

Uh, like OpenOffice/Impress ?

There's already an effort underway, otherwise, I would have asked "Mozilla" insead of OpenOffice

@EntilZha

I voted yes, but mainly towards the donation testing side of things as my programming skills are not great, and I don't currently have the time to improve them as much as I would like.

@EntilZha

I voted yes!

I haven't got any sort of programming skills, neither have I any money to spare.

But my effort is at hand where and when it is needed or wanted.

I think it is important to have a solid office suite, and OOo is exactly that. To that, I think it is important that You can type a document in one platform and read it on another. That doesn't make the Amiga less unique, rather more up to date.

Same as DaveP I can provide storage, and bandwidth, mirror, whatever is server/linux related if it doesn't take too much time as I already have quite a long list already.

I don't have a use for that app myself but I'd be glad to help as I think it would be a great asset to make the Amiga more appealing to people who need to exchange office documents.
Heck, some might even get rid of their PC

ok, so how good is this compared to the other options out there?
i have heard lots of good things about this one but ummm tbh i have no idea what makes what good in theese areas as tbh i never use theese kind of tools..

and whats an estimated time line for such a product? ...what about size of the source? and im sure we need to make a full new gui for it...sounds like alot of work.

cheers

Voted no because I don't need OpenOffice

thats the wrong reason. you might not need it, and there might be some alternatives. but those alternatives are sorely lacking and not being developed. even if they were, they wouldnt be able to push amigaos into the marked.

im assuming you are interested in amigaos and want the best for it, and for it to get back into mainstream. what is _required_ for this to happen is applications like openoffice and firefox/thunderbird. nothing less can do it. nothing less will fufill the needs of the big masses, and nothing less will have the brand names to make an impact.

im hoping that this porting attempt succedes, and its good to see a capable programmer pushing it forward. hopefully a few of the people who voted yes will actually be able to contribute and not just congest the development process.

best of luck.

Extremely good. There's not much competition, anyway. In the open source pool, there's only AbiWord and KOffice that are somewhat competitive, and AbiWord is only a word processor. KOffice is at least word processor and graphics plus spreadsheet, I think, but I don't think it has a presentation part (like PowerPoint). Plus, it's tied to KDE.

Don't know. Note that this poll is only meant to find out if there are enough people willing to commit to such a project...

No. OpenOffice doesn't use any GUI toolkit on any platform (at least the 1.x versions, not sure about 2.x which is to appear soonish). It basically uses the drawing area as a frame buffer.

I think is rather demanding when it comes to drawing functionality, i.e. it needs the possibility to draw thick lines, etc, but that's not really very challenging.

But AFAIK they are no longer maintained or updated, which is a sad thing for sure but leaves you with not much to do if you run into a problem.

Well, PageStream is a completely different product. Openoffice doesn't really offer much functionality in terms of desktop publishing.

edit: Another thing to keep in mind is that AmigaOS will never be taken serious unless apps like Mozilla/Firefox/Thunderbird and OpenOffice.org are available.

@EntilZha

Yep, I am taking a year out of any full time commitments so this is something I could definaatly get involved in.
The one problem though is can I use UAE and a GCC corss compiler or even AROS I don't have an A1 and don't know when I will have the money to get one. Could money donated to the project be used to buy an A1 and set it up as a remote machine devs can connect to so they can test builds etc? This would require access to the Linux/Windows->OS4 cross compiler.
One thing to do is speek to the devs at beuinted.org who are porting OpenOffice to BeOS. They had problem with the fact that BeOS didn't/doesn't ahve a working full Java port at the time (It doesn't now, it is still in development) IIRC
Update: See http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=28773 for a python workarround

@EntilZha

Depends on if you provide on the job training even for the non -programmers.

I had signed an NDA years ago with the Phoenix Consortium and signed for ATO membership, not because I was highly skilled but because SOMEBODY had to do something to get Amiga things going.

I never did receive anything to translate. But then, there are already a bunch of people who can already do German to English tranlsation.

Anyway, if someone explained what type of administrative things need to be done, I'd do what I can to help. It's just that I've never been involved in any kind of software project, so I'm a rank beginner. (hey, if you would just have added me to the list of OS4 beta-testers, way back when, I'd already be "broken in" and trained.)

Oh, and I'm sure my ISP includes some personal web space, which isn't being used at all right now.
Paul

@EntilZha

I'm going to go and do some diggint on the OpenOffice toolkit that I have seen mentioned on thier website. Apparently it is changing quite dramatically for version 2 (This is the reason work on the MacOs port stopped, there was no point porting toolkit 1 to Mac OS X when they would just have to do it again for Toolkit 2, maybe this is just the right time for an OS4 effort to start with Toolkit 2 available for beta testing)

@all

I don't think this poll is a question of "Do YOU need/want to get OO ported?"
rather than "Does the Amiga platform NEED to get OO ported?" and that is a
definite YES, imho. Because more and more people are joining the community of
OO users (maybe just because these horrendous M$-Office prices).

It matures, it has all an Office suite needs (well, sometime it WILL have)
and it's nearly on EVERY platform out there, so i think it would be just great
to have the possibility to do a project (Spreadsheet, Database, Presentation, Text)
and share it with simply EVERYONE (because it's free and downloadable)

Come on guys Mozilla is being ported, let's make this become reality

Just my opinion

just a quick note, have a look at Diagram of inter-project dependencies by C.P. Hennessy and Diagram of component layers by Ximian

@Raziel

it is neither, it is a "would you actually DO something to get OOo ported?"
