Hi All!

I browse these forums once or twice every month for news and just to keep up a bit.
I'm still interested in jumping on again if the right things happen.
One of the main things is good hardware for a good price.
X1000 too expensive, X500 too low spec imo.

But my main interest is OS4. I have gathered that all updates from 4.1.7 and up is handled
online? So no other than OS4 owners see what updates contain anymore?

My question is..
What major things has happened to OS4 since I sold my system early 2007?

I can't remember reading of any major news other than graphic HD drivers.

We are waiting for X3500, X5000/20 and X5000/40 from A-EON,
price not known, I guess it will depend on CPU you pick.

Acube-Systems might be working on some thing, they have been a bit silent lately.

Mostly bug fixes, support for BoxFS this enable you to use NTFS and EXT3 filesystems.

NDA stuff, we don't know a lot about whats goes on.

What has happened is that Composition or “hardware bitmap rendering” that AmigaOS4.1 uses for windows etc.
this feature Is slowly being taken advantage of in programs like Mplayer, Basilisk II, I belive some games use Composition like Swamp Defense and M.A.C.E.

I have recently fixed the DVD read speed in mplayer, new version of mplayer will come out when time is right.

There will also be a new version of DvPlayer coming soon, I be suppressed if it does take advantage of composition as well.

AmigaAMP now supports M3U and PLS.

JIT for E-UAE is getting better, big speed improvement.

Opus5 work on AmigaOS4.1

New version of Ppaint is coming soon.

I think you need to wait for AmigaOS4.2 to see some major new features.

As you know SMP is being worked on, 3D drivers are being worked on.
And there is the new shell we have been waiting forever for its in beta testing.

@Samwel

As an X1000 owner I am still waiting for some key software support long promised, but while waiting things have become very interesting from other parties. People have become downright productive! Recent months have brought updated ports of a top notch Web browser (Odyssey), an old Amiga superstar (DOpus5) and an MPlayer update that leverages composition output mode (as just mentioned) to bring HD video playback within reach of my X1000 under AmigaOS. Also, an original graphics application called SketchBlock is getting more capability and sophistication all the time. These things have been sufficient to distract me lately. :)

"What major things has happened to OS4 since I sold my system early 2007"

I bought my SAM440 MUHAHAHAAAAaaaa!

but really...
The biggest things:
-better HW has come out (not cheaper)
-AmiUpdate (apps+OS are updated with mouseclick)
-2D support for modern GPUs
-more multiflavour SW is released

Not quite, they aren't up to 4.1.7 yet or IOW Update 7. We are still at Update 6. And all updates flow from that. Which tend to be component updates.

An Update 7 is planned, which will be some form of combo update. Long overdue.

It depends on how you define "major" Yes, the progress could always be faster and the releases bigger but I tend to be rather modest as regards my AmigaOS expectations, so I'm glad for every upwards step the platform takes.

I bought my Sam in mid 2009 and I found the OS rather disappointing, with flakey USB support and slow graphic performance. This has improved tremendously over the years, with OS 4.1 Update 6 being easily the most stable Amiga system I have ever used. There have been numerous improvements "under the bonnet" which I find important as a programmer but which will ultimately lead to more powerful, more stable applications and a better user experience. There has also been continuous development in the hardware department, with new OS4-capable machines being produced, and although I consider some of A-EONS efforts misguided (that people in 2014 want a big pricey motherboard with a "wonder" custom chip and many expansion slots is simply wrong), I'm glad there's choice and the platform can live on.

@Trixie

Exactly the same feeling here, i also bought my Sam440 on 1 June 2009 and it was my first NG Amiga ever !
As you said there were a lot of problems at the time but it was more or less usable even for a person like me with a low experience about such system, yes i was a classic user at the time but NG system are different

But today OS4 is mutch better than 2009, not to mentions the big list of released software.

I'd say the same as Trixie, including the comment on AEon/hardware...

You're still here... Why don't you take your own advice?

@Severin

just to ad few words - a BIG surprise appears after I reinstalled AmigaOS sysem on 60gb cheap [60eur] SSD drive! Things are speeded up over 300%! Amiga x1000 is more usable than average Android tab! I am very satisfied now and since this happened I don`t care much if I surf from PC or Amiga now :) Both are very equal. Odyssey is really great, and has better font implementation. For example - my www site http://www.deetronic.rs looks normal in Odyssey from 2013 than FireFox port!

@Trixie

Speaking as someone who wants a big motherboard with a "wonder" chipset and lots of expansion slots, I think they're right. :)
They wanted to make hardware, but didn't want to compete with the Acube machines (the markets too small for two companies, one would leave the market and then we'd all lose out). Therefore they had to be different and be high-end, which meant big with lots of expansion slots but unfortunately a high price tag to boot.

I'd say given the amount of X1000 they have sold so far, they weren't far wrong.

@Spirantho

I have an X1000 but I'd have preferred it in an ITX form factor with a single PCIe slot for Video. I don't think that would have competed with Acube's board because they are lower performance products.

Having said that, I can perfectly understand why they chose ATX and more expansion slots.
