| Hi All,
Will 2013 be the year we can print from Amiga OS to any modern printer? The current state of printing is either buy a postscript compatible printer or one a few that are supported by the supported drivers.
I think there is a path to get support for the vast majority of printers on the market by porting a few key pieces from the Open Source Linux world.
I'd like to get a feel for who would contribute to the bounty and if there are any folks with a bit or porting knowledge that could help me develop a credible plan and list of items that would need to be built to earn the bounty.
I'm ready to kick in a few hundred to get things started. Anyone else interested in support this type of effort?
Thanks, Bill "tekmage" Borsari |

| Got a HP colour laserjet 2600n. If I get any luck with the XE repair or get a sam, what cable should there be to get it to the ethernet? From the pc there is usb + there is a place for the square a little bigger one to plug. I think it's postscript.
Amiga-HP cable?

Postscript is a printer control Language not a device interface. Your A1XE can print quite adequately to a Postscript capable printer, using either USB, Ethernet, or a network printer, again over ethernet. _________________ Peter Swallow. Ok so USB is enough. If I never get the XE from repair.. This Network option was an expencive addon in the HP. "2-weeks" maybe and then I'll ask more if any NG Amiga to test.
Thanks.

i'd love to see gutenprint integrated into the OS. this path went well for the haiku developers, and i hope the AOS development team is considering going down a similar path. the truth is, though, that my printing experience with my amiga NG machines is just fine. but that's only because of the HP photosmart driver on os4depot and postscript printers at work.

yes and no. i really feel printing is such a basic function of an operating system that i'd feel a bit put out feeling the need to pony up for a bounty when our OS is a commercial product, especially given that hyperion has mentioned that an updated printing architecture is planned for future OS releases. what i might want to contribute to would be to purchase the rights to turboprint and update that product instead.
but, hey, if someone set up a bounty to improve the printing system of amigaOS 4.1, yeah, i'd kick in some bucks.

An idea to a printer company and a lot of people would find that printer... No bucks, just a good driver with maybe in co-operation with TurboPrint and then we could buy this machine? Just select a good one, not my job but Hyperions?

I'm curious, can the unix CUPS printing system be ported to X-Windows, and thus to amiCygnix? If so, wouldn't that provide everything we need?

There are indeed plans to use CUPS in a future print system. But it has some not-so-good drawbacks.
Most of the "consumer" printers that are supported in CUPS are depending on closed source "support" libraries from the manufacturers, only available for linux x86/x64 and Linux PPC (atm). So, if CUPS is used, there has to be some framework that is able to make use of the LinuxPPC printer support libraries.
The day support for LinuxPPC is dropped, we are in the same situation we are in yet.
If you dont believe it, have a look at hplip. It states to be open source, but this is not the full truth. The CUPS parts of the printer drivers and several GUI libraries for the drivers are open source, correct. But what about the "real" printing functions? You will find several, closed source, "support" libraries that carry the vital parts of each printer driver regarding "PCL3GUI", "LIDIL" and some other "languages".
If all is open source, why should e.g. HP ask for a fee, so that an interested developer could see the informations regarding e.g. a PCL3GUI capable driver? I tried and failed because of the numbers they would like to see before they do even think about giving me some information about PCL3GUI. 6 digits, go figure yourself
Same goes for Canon, Epson and other manufacturers.
There was some rumour some years ago regarding a Minolta printer that should be supported with Amiga drivers. Never heard of it again... |

Check out the netprinter and hp printer driver for OS4. If you read the docs it tells you that it has PCL3 support, which basically most all modern HP printers off the shelf have afaik.. so should work OOTB |

| Considering the fact that printer support has become a burning issue in OS4.x, the development team have surely been thinking about a possible solution? I'd love to hear from the official places what roads are being considered (or have been taken, if that is the case). I'm not asking for an ETA because I know the answer ("when it's done") - a little assurance that the problem is being dealt with would do.

SSolie talket about it at last years AmiWest I think it was. Also one of the Friedens wrote about it at amigans.net saying that CUPS is one candidate for a new printingsystem. |

Yes, ANY networked postscript printer will do. I always used
a) Workbench Postscript Printer driver (e.g. FinalWriter, Notepad...). b) any inbuild Postscript driver in PageStream (HP ones work fine on my Xerox) c) from Amipdf or Ghostscript you cannot use Workbench driver (crashes) us inbuilt Postscriptdrivers instead.
However, I encountered three issues:
1) Colors are printed to dark (speaking of photographs, vectorbased stuff is fine though) 2) OS4 pdf viewer got a bug, it is only able to print letter format, some printers will then ask you for "letter" format. I did not find a way to force "letter formate" into "DIN A4 format" on my Xerox. Wasn't a problem on Brother and Epson Lasers... 3) using TurboPrint's Postcriptdriver always caused system freezes Last edited by gerograph on 05-Feb-2013 at 07:48 PM.
