E-mail spam to Amigaworld account address

Hi,

I am receiving spam to my e-mail account. No shit, you say... Well, the thing is that I use a unique e-mail address for each site I register to. Amigaworld is no exception. That said, the e-mail address to which I receive spam is only used for signing up to Amigaworld. How in the world wild web is this possible?

No, I have never checked the show e-mail address checkbox. The only ways my address can possibly have found its way to the spammers are either by breaking into the database, or by getting the information from someone with legal access to it.

Anybody else receiving e-mail spam with a clear connection to Amigaworld?

@johey

No, nothing not directly aw.net related.
so no spam from aw.net, despite all these years to my email.

@johey

Perhaps it is from a spam bot that brute force generated a match for your email address?

@Xmas87

Certainly not. I accept all addresses on the form (whatever).foo@bar.se (where foo and bar are substitutes for this example). So in this case the spam is received to amigaworld.foo@bar.se. If they had brute forced, I would receive spam from like {aa, ab, ac .... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz}.foo@bar.se.

@johey

No, no spam received at all in relation to the site in all of the years I have been a member of it.

I do a similar thing myself for sites I join (for the same reason).

The two scenarios you paint however would not be the only way information can be leaked (as the heartbleed bug would have demonstrated quite clearly).

@padrino

Nothing here either, I use a similar email notation depending on its origin thus site@mydomain.

Some possible ideas in your case

1. Your domain hosting has been hacked, thus email address have been scrapped from your email store.

2. After receiving an email from aw.net, you have forwarded that to another person, and that persons email account/system has been scrapped for email address.

3. Man-in the middle attack, your smtp/pop data has been transmitted over some network with someone scrapping emails out the packets(unsecured wifi etc)

4. Your email username/password is compromised.

But as no one else (as yet) has received the same emails then I doubt its a Aw.net breach

I just received a spam mail directed to my unique amigaworld mail address too.
I know that this doesn't necessarily mean aw.net got hacked, but better to report such issues nevertheless, who knows.
