MOL on AmigaOne

I thought it might be wise to start a different thread about MOL.

So, I have a micro AmigaOne with Amiga OS4.1 (my favoretest OS ever), as well as Debian Lenny and Squeeze installed on it.
I have gotten the MOL program and kernel modules for kernel 2.6.18 from Geri and set everything up to run MOL on my Debian Lenny installation...however, when I run MOL like this:

startmol --test

I get an error indicating something about needed to rebuild kernel modules.
So do I simply go to the MOL kernel module directory and run make to do that?

When I type startmol -a --test the self test runs okay and is successful.

Secondly, I would love to test out MOL using MAC OSX 10.4 Tiger, but for some reason the prices for the 10.4 version are very high...the cheapest I can find the official install CDs or DVDfor isabout $61 + shipping. I thought this was an "old" OS?
However, I can find official copies of OSX 10.3 Panther for sale for around $30 or so.

Question...is it worth the $30 extra for Tiger? Does Panther work in MOL for the AmigaOne? Is there anything else I need to look for when looking to buy OSX? Does it need to specify PPC G3, or anything like that?

Thanks!

Scott

Can you post the output of "startmol --list" and "uname -a", please?

I suppose Panther should work, too. BTW MoL can only emulate a G3 CPU on the AmigaOne. It crashes on G4 CPUs with Altivec enabled in molrc.osx.

It looks like you still have an old MoL kernel module installed. Please install this new mol-kmods_0.9.73-2_powerpc.deb package.

Oh, you are again correct. I installed the mol 0.9.73-2 kernel and program debs and now when I run startmol --test I get no warnings or errors.

Thanks!

Has anyone actually TRIED MAC OSX 10.3 with MOL...just curious how fast (or slow) it might run. Is the 10.4 version so much better that it sells for more than double the price everywhere?

I am planning to do just that for years but never find/take the time to do it (even bought OSX10.3) and also interested too in the speed...

the idea was to install a minimal debian system like Sarge without X and let MOL do the rest... too bad the guy behind pegxmac could not fix its package for AmigaOnes

Hmmm...does 10.3 come on CDs or a DVD? I only find retail versions of the 10.4 version on DVD for some reason. Anyway, Geri's latest MOL and 2.6.18 kernel for the microA1 and other Teron AmigaOnes should work. What machine do you have?

@Geri
Is there any problem installing OSX 103 or 10.4 from a DVD drive in Debian Lenny?

How do you mean? Is this for the newer version he created?

The original version works fine. Well installs fine. IIRC it used to be on a torrent. I suppose I could seed it.

Mac-on-Linux. Allows to run MaxOS X (and its application) on top of PowerPC Linux.

Not that I would know of. Why?

As I look at various offerings of MAC OSX 10.4, I see that public release versions up to 10.4.3 were all for PowerPC. After 10.4.3, apple started releasing PowerPC and Intel (X86) versions of MAC OSX.
But there are numerous versions of 10.4.3 as well. For example, MA190Z/A is for a G3 Powerbook, while M9639ZA is for G3,G4 and G5 MACs. Both say they require built in fire-wire to work.
Two questions then....does it make any difference which of these versions I buy to run on my G3 microA1 using MacOnLinux?
How does MOL work if my microA1 does not have firewire but firewire is "required" for OSX 10.4?

Thanks!

I was under the impression that mol used the native cpu of the ppc machine that it is running on, and virtualised other resources.....
Why do u say mol emulates a g3?

What is Mac-On-Linux?

Note, Mac-On-Linux has not been updated for some time. Does it work in new versions of Ubuntu? Please ammend if you know the answer.

Mac on Linux will let you boot up the OS X partition of a dual boot system, inside Linux. It is also possible to create disc images, the same as with Virtualbox or VMware. It is not software-emulated, so the actual speed is very fast. MOL currently only works on pre-G5 processors, though ppc64 support is near completion

You're absolutely right! However you have to disable Altivec support on any AmigaOne with a G4 CPU, as otherwise MoL crashes the machine. Basically that leaves you with a G3 virtual machine. And yes, the term "emulation" is wrong in this case...

MoL was adapted to work with the Linux kernel virtual machine (KVM) and thus should also work with newer versions of Ubuntu, given that both the kernel and MoL are compiled with KVM support.

The original ppc64 support was "near completion" since a long time. But with KVM support MoL should also work out of the box on G5 machines.

With only 2D-support the GUI will be slow but not the other parts. Kind of like AmiCygnix.

Have fun.

So, which is better....MA190Z/A for a G3 Powerbook, or M9639ZA (I think the standard G3/G4/G5 offering) for running with MOL?
Do either work with MOL?

Thanks!

@scabit

on real macs, 10.3 is molases on a g3 (even the fastest you can get)
on a g4 10.4 is the best.
dont bother with 10.5, as they removed the classic emulation side of things...
really 10.4 has so many important features that you are better off with it.
i wouldn't go past 10.4 myself. on a g4 it will run great.

@Barana

Yes...10.4 is the best...and also the most expensive to buy used on eBay or amazon.com. both the version numbers I mentioned are for 10.4.3 .... but for different machines. Both work with G3 CPUs...(which is what I have) but does either work properly with MOL. If so, should I look for one over the other?
