Hi all,

I've been looking for software to covert WMA audio to MP3 (oreven WAV will do)

So far no luck.

Any ideas ?

There are some converter programs around (i.e. ffmpeg, CodeAudio) but i don't think there has been a codec written yet to deal with .wma/.wav files.

If you only have to convert single files i use this site

I've used this from OnyxSoft to convert some of my CDs to mp3, don't know if it's what you're looking for: CodeAudio

Or use mplayer to play the wma and filesave as output.

mplayer -ao pcm song.wma

then encode the output to mp3 with lame

There is SoX on the Depot but it is CLI only and I have found it hard to use for simple conversions. For example I had an MP3 which had for some reason 32-bit samples. I needed it in a standard 16-bit AIFF but I spent ages dealing with errors on the command line. Googled for how to do it and it just gave errors still on examples I tried. I don't recall how but I somehow got past it and it was so simple yet so annoying how long it took to find out how to "Talk" to it. Certainly not the most logical and user friendly converter, even for a CLI one, but if you can figure out it does work.

Seems okay for straight conversion from one format to another.

All that being said, I don't know if it supports WMA but it can do MP3 and WAV.

I had some issue converts betwen formats with different sample sizes with Sox too.

IN this case the second solution of decode with mplayer and reencode with lame is most likely the easiest option.

Also I coudnt get ffmpeg to work, it kept on giving some error message about not able to find LAME, I'll lokk into it some more.
And I dont think amisounded supports loading WMA files
KeyRythMe appears to be some sort of keyboard utility
Never heard about Prisma, I'll look it up.
I'll take a look at Mplayer.
And I'll check out Codeaudio, but I do not think it can load WMA's either

I'm so tired of having to struggle to get simple things to just work out of the box....

ps, I'm struggling to get WMA coverted on windows too. None of the converter software I tried, did load the WMA file, even when they said they would, the same goes for Audio editors. Strange eh ? Perhaps I'm missing something.

btw, those exact same file did convert using the sit Raziel mentioned

Gimme url to an wma that you want to convert as an example i can try and see if any of the tools i use work.

I'll be happy to help you out with ffmpeg, if you want.
Do you use IRC?

Sound like you didn't use the right options.

Select the Audio Out tab.
Under File I/O, enter the file you want to convert using Input 0.
Under Output, select a destination and file name.
Next to that change Use File Ext to MP3.

Click start and thats it.

CodeAudio works as a GUI for other CLI based converters, so you don't have to deal with CLI. It also support CDDB and you can write ID3 tags with it, it's a good program

Lame is an mp3 encoder. Actually, it is the mp3 encoder. I didn't think ffmpeg would need an external Lame to encode mp3, but maybe it does. Anyway, you can find Lame on OS4depot.

CodeAudio also uses Lame but it will offer to install it automatically. However I don't think any command in CodeAudio can decode wma.

We still have it now. I use it. But I do agree, the Amiga had a GUI simce 1985, so Amiga programmers need to catch up!

I know what you mean. The other day I wanted to load in an AIFF into a sample editor and cut off the silence from the start. And I really mean, silence, digital zeros. But, I could find nothing to do sometihng so simple, not on my HD. And yet, I'm sure we did that that kind of stuff in the 8-bit audio days!

I even tried Audacity on the PC and couldn't do it either. I was shocked! All it had were these scientfic algorithms to detect silence between two levels. "I don't want this BS! I just want to trim dead sound from the sample. Are you stupid and don't know what a zero is!?"

The same happens for gfx programs. I'm sure the Amiga had many but when I want to do something like load in a JPEG, crop it ans save out as sometihng else, they all seem to be crap. I don't know how we put up with this years ago!

And we are still putting up with it now!
