A new e-book focussing solely on Amiga PD and Shareware games has now been released for download from Amazon.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Ultimate-Guide-Amiga-Games-ebook/dp/B00JVARFSU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398808279&sr=8-1&keywords=ultimate+guide+to+amiga+pd+games

The book contains:

A foreward by Graham Humphrey (author of Downfall game) about the Amiga PD game scene
An introduction by myself which includes the results of an online top 100 Amiga PD game vote
200 mini reviews of the best Amiga PD / shareware games
An exclusive interview with Michael Welch (author of Scorched Tanks)
An extended interview with David Cruickshank (author of Alien Fish Finger) which contains new content from the interview which appeared on the Amiga PD website
Information on recent / upcoming Amiga PD games

The book is free to borrow if you have an Amazon Prime account.

If you want to purchase the book, there is a minimum charge of £1.29, but all royalties are going to AmigaPd's chosen charity, Mencap.

I would like to thank Graham, Robert, Lifeschool, David and Michael for contributing to the book and to everyone who contributed to the original top 100 vote on the various Amiga game forums.

I hope you enjoy the book.

@amigapd

Interesting book subject, and it makes me wonder, how do the programming tools for the Classic Amiga systems compare to modern programming tools to make simple games for Android, or iOS?

Is it easier and quicker to create a cell phone type of game today on a PC or Mac, than it is to create a new Classic Amiga game using any of the old or new Amiga programming tools? I am guessing that most Classic Amiga games can easily be ported to either Android, or iOS for running on cell phones and Android game devices, or iPads?

If making these types of games were significantly easier to make using Classic Amiga programming tools (which is probably not the case), it could renew interest in the Amiga and you could have dozens, or hundreds of bedroom programmers creating new content for cell phones on UAE, or some might even buy an old Classic Amiga for the novelty of it.

@amigadave

According to an interview in AF it would be easier today. Back then in the good old "Classic" days you pretty much wrote in ASM, not because it is easier than C++, but because it was faster and took less space.

You also had to deal with limitations of the hardware. And program around that. Or program tricks. And then you had to package it all together, usually on a floppy disk.

Even an average cell phone will most likely has a 32-bit framebuffer and 2d hardware acceleration. Most games these days are 2d which looks funny to me for things claiming to be modern, but they don't deal with playfields or sprites anymore and composite it all together. So a whole game I suppose is composed of blitter objects that can blend into the screen. The hardware isn't rendering live like the 2d Amiga games, but rendering to some framebuffer under software control, which gives them more freedom and less to think about.

Thanks to everyone who has purchased the book. If you enjoy reading it, please take a few moments to write a short customer review on Amazon to raise its profile. It did briefly reach #1 slot on the Retro Computer chart.

In terms of non kindle versions of the book, there are plans for a physical book, available from Amazon's print on demand service. The book would cost £19.99 and would be A4 in size (there are no savings for making the book smaller - the high costs are due to the number of colour pictures but it wouldn't look as good without them). The earliest this would be available is end of July.

I may make a PDF version available from the Amiga PD website in a weeks time - I can't do it currently due to a requirement to have the book exclusive to Amazon in order to make it free for online borrowing but so far no one has borrowed the book.

Thanks again for all the support for the project.
