Associating files with programs help needed

Hi everyone,

I have this "new" amiga 1200 i have been configuring. I migrated all of my data from the old (still working) 1200 I own. However that machine was a bit customized, but it's been so many years since I did all that heavy tweaking (1996) I really don't know how I did file association with various programs.

I'd love to get it where when i click on particular files especially core / common things like .txt files, images, etc.. to open up with a program like multiview.

I know i used to poke around in the startup files (this is pretty confusing to know for sure which files I should change) and I remember that I used to do a lot of backups of my WB because i know it was easy to screw something up if not careful..

however maybe there are even tools / applications that came along later. I'm running WB 3.1 with a stock 1200.. i have a 1208 with 8mb fast ram, so I can spare some memory to make life easier. :)

any cool / useful app tips for general improvement would be welcome too.

All I have right now in my startup is a "no click" and "magic menu"

Thanks!
Caleb

@227

to better explain, I realize i could probably just overwrite the root files with the old ones, but i fear this could be problematic. i'm trying to be sure I don't break anything given much of my amiga knowledge is hazy at best these days :)

Thanks!
Caleb

@227,

If you want to launch a PDF or a text file or what ever, right click on it's icon and enter what you want to open it with "tooltypes"

@227

The menu item you want is:
Icon >> Information...

And you don't want to change ToolTypes but the icon's "Default Tool". The default tool is the program that gets run when you double click the icon.

In addition, if you want to associate all files of a particular type - rather than just an individual file - with a particular tool, you'll need to use something like DefIcons.

Do your files have icons or is it a case of show all? Been a while since I used 3.1 but you be able to open up a text file or image and have it load in MultiView. At least plain text and IFF files.

I take it you get some kind of error?

Install a good filemanager like DirectoryOpus 4 or 5, within those you can set up filetypes to deal any type of file without having to change the files or their icons at all. most of the basic filetypes are already configured for you.

DirectoryOpus 4 and 5 are both available for free.

As people have mentioned, you basically have three options:
1. Install a file manager, like DirectoryOpus. It already has a lot of file associations, and you can make more yourself.

2. If you insist on doing file operations in Workbench: Install DefIcons. DefIcons lets you associate various icons to different file types. It also comes with a set of defaults.

3. Give each file an icon of its own and set the default tool in each icon (menu->Icon->Information) to the tool you want. But you don't want to do that with 1000 pictures or 1000 source files for example..

The classic way of working with files is typically to start the program first and then load your file into it...

If you do this, also install this: http://aminet.net/package/util/sys/envhandler

Actually install it even if you don't use DefIcons.
