Morning people,

After upgrading to 4.1, I thought I'd have a look at Codebench but I seem to be doing something wrong during installation and I'm not sure what.

The installation seems to be successful but when I open the Codebench directory, the only thing I can find (show-all-files) is the Images drawer.

Anyone else come across this before or point out my stupid mistake?
Is the executable lurking somewhere else?

Thanks,
Robert.

@Robert

My guess would be an incomplete download. Try re-downloading the archive and see if you get a bigger size, then remove your previous incomplete installation and try again from the new archive.

Best regards,

Niels

@nbache

Thanks for the reply.

I'll try downloading it again tonight.

-EDIT-
Having said that, would the installation say it was successful if it was an incomplete download?
Seems unlikely.

@Robert

It might, it depends on the install script and which files were missing or incomplete.

Best regards,

@nbache

Didn't have much time last night but tried deleting and re-installing with the same result.

I'll hopefully be able to spend a bit more time on it tonight.

I just download and test installed both version available. No issues.

My procedure was:

Download archve to ram:
Unpack to ram:
Double Click on install icon.

Read intro window
Click Next
Choose Install (rather than upgrade )
Click Next
Choose directory work:temp in file gadget.
Click Next
Click Next
Installs
Choose Finish on last screen (normally reboot would be recomended).

Indeed - after half a dozen unsuccessful attempts I did a whole OS4 system reinstall and then Codebench installed first time.

Alas, I now have no time left to dabble with it till next week.

Anyway, than you both for your help.

How annoying. And unsual problem. We don't know what caused it except sometihng on your system. Well best you cleaned it up before other problems emerged.

@Hypex

Probably (possibly) something python related, as the install utility is python based.

Yes, I did swear a wee bit more than usual (which is already a lot ) after each bungled install attempt.
On noting my increasing frustration, my partner, who is just barely tolerating my recent decision to set up "that geeky eyesore" in the corner of the living room, suggested I toss the whole shebang in the bin.

That was when I thought "sod it, I'll just wipe the drive and start over."
She was a wee bit crest-fallen when it worked.

Fortunately I was in the unusual position of having nothing of note on my system as I'd formatted the HD before installing 4.1FE. (I hadn't used my A1 for about a year and had already rescued most of the media I had on it.)

Still, it's installed now, although the gfx on the icons are corrupt but I think that's system-wide rather Codebench specific, so I'll hopefully get a chance to play with it next week sometime.
(I'm away to the slopes for the weekend.)

@broadblues

That's interesting as the one I looked at (0.42SE) had an executable for the installer. It's almost 90K which seems a lot if it just spawns some Python scripts. Unless it somehow is a compile of the Python scripts.

Hmm, crest-fallen, don't think I knew that one.

Given you formatted the HD and did a fresh install that doesn't sound right. What are your filesystem settings?

Enjoy your slopes. Don't slide too far far away.

Actually I'm not sure now, I thought it was based on Installer Utility as the GUI is almost identical, but it seems to be a bespoke version, but as to file size python itself is 70k (not counting libpython.so) and all that does is call python scripts

Standard / FFS / International.

Maybe related to my dusty, old Radeon 8500 LE gfx card?

On the bright side, the tooltips mean I can see what each icon is for anyway, so I'm off to try the introductory tutorial.

I never actually got around to that due to my entire system being temporarily out of action.

As of today (and thanks to Damien ) it's back up and running so I thought I'd give this a try.

The "getting started" tutorial refers to a sample project called "Demo" but I can't find this in my installation.
Can anyone confirm if it should be there or this perhaps an out of date tutorial?

That's a good point. It could use anything then that works. Which could be Python.

Okay this needs to be set as Long filenames for OS4 to work correctly. DOS7. It's in the guide but I've said before it needs to be set as default.

I can't find any Radeon docs in OS4 but that is an old card so you may be right. It even makes my old 9200SE look better.

I checked here and I cannot find it. So I think it is a bug in the archive. Although it seems to have a funny setup, without a project file, where you are expected to create one yourself. I briefly read the guide on the Demo project but it didn't seem clear what it was telling you to do. At least I didn't see any specific directory locations listed for the Demo files.

I've since swapped it with the Voodoo 3 that was in my Pegasos - much smoother altogether.

Yes, I started a thread in the CodeBench forum and Simon said he'll look into it.
Thought I was losing the few marbles I have left.

With a bit of luck I'll get around to learning to program a bit for OS4.1.... maybe sometime before Xmas.
