CF Hard drive install

Hi all,

As the subject says i am thinking of installing a Compact Flash card as a Hard Drive for an A1200. Couple of questions:

1 Is there likely to be enough room to install as well as the existing hard drive which I think is about 3 inches. I have an Eide connector which I think has a 4 way splitter connector. One is the current Hard Drive and one is to a cd drive.

2 Assuming I can install as above can I then install a new system from cd?. I think the one i have is os 3.9.

Thanks in advance

@Bowler

I'll refrain from my first instinct, which was to question how you don't know these things? Does a CF card fit with your existing harddrive? You tell us. We don't know how much room is in your machine. Also, how do you not know what OS version you have? Surely it's written on the cd casing and printed on the cd?

Weirdness of your post aside:

Yes. A cf card should physically fit in your a1200 case. Even if using the original drive bracket the cf card can sit on top, between the keyboard and drive bay. Whether or not it'll work without issue (you mention having 2 drives already, hdd, and optical) may be another thing. Probably will, but your questions are somewhat vague, so can't say for sure. Also, what size is your drive? A 2.5 inch drive, or 3.5 inch?
As for the OS,...... if it comes on cd, how else do you expect to install it?

Long story short a CF card will behave pretty much identically to a standard harddrive, so anything that applies there also applies to a CF card. Main difference is that a CF card is much more expensive per MB and is slower. Only real advantage is seek times, which can be handy when dealing with a slow interface like the a1200's ide connector.
Biggest over-rated bit of hardware for classic amigas in my opinion. Sure they work, but theyre only really appealing if you like paying 10x as much for your storage. I regret buying a 32gig cf card and would swap it for a 500gig hdd any day (about same price).

@Bowler

Have you considered our Amiga 1200 Compact Flash CF IDE Back Plate Adapter - this lets you use your EIDE'99 and existing hard disk internally and a CF hard drive is then plugged into the back of the A1200:

Thanks for the reply.

I guess i could just replace the existing hard drive which is only 2gig and is pretty much full up with a larger one rather than use a separate Cf card.

For bigger sizes that isn't worth it. Also bigger ones tend to be like SDHC high speed so that may not work with a simple adapter. Sure I read some trouble somewhere.

Anyway you forgot one thing a CF-HD is quiet. No accessing sounds. If you don't like noise that's good.

@fishy_fis

you're confusing SSD with CF? CF cards are dirt cheap nowadays- 32 GB can be found for $10-$25 whereas an SSD is in the $200s

@klx300r

Nope, Im talking about CF cards. Ironically ssds are much cheaper than you've suggested, while cf cards (anything beyond 8gig at least) are more expensive.

Cost me $70 aud for a 32gig cf card (sdhc 400x). Same price as the 120gig msata ssd I bought the same day. A 500 gig harddrive was $55 (2.5 inch sata).
I could've gone cheaper, but I wanted something that was going to work next week (cheap CF cards are terrible and a waste of money).

sdhc is "Secure Digital High Capacity", and is a format for SD cards, not for Compact Flash cards. Compact flash are often used as replacements for IDE drives because the interface is very similar, often requiring no conversion at all.
SD Cards on the other hand are far more popular, but the interface is notthing at all like a IDE drive, so conversion electronics would be required for this application.

@lylehaze

For the most part you're correct. My 32gig cf card however has "sdhc" plastered on the label.
I didn't just make this stuff up ya know? :) I based it on my actual purchases :)

@fishy_fis

Perhaps it is a SD-CF adapter with a SDHC card inside?

This would explain the high price.

@thomas

Perhaps 32gig cards are cheaper elsewhere, just doing a quick browse it seems I got a bargain. Even now (have had it for a little while) $70 is quite reasonable for a reasonable spec 32gig cf card.

As for the card itself, not impossible I guess that there's some sort of adaptor involved, but it looks just like a normal card.

@fishy_fis

Please explain "reasonable spec". Your card says 400x which means 60 MB/s. This is an extraordinary high speed for a flash memory. It even outruns USB 2.0. Fast SD cards used for video recording are 133x, 20 MB/s. An Amiga IDE port does ca. 3 MB/s under best conditions, so a 20x flash card should be totally sufficient. Perhaps you paid a very high price because your opinion of "reasonable" is a bit extreme.
