Didn't think much of that article to be honest.

Never needed to use mail merge, so never really looked into how to do it.

From reading that article it looks very simple compared to stuff I have created in excel and access, that calls and sends info to and from other office products.

On the other hand I know people who do need to use mail merge, who can barely switch on a computer.

Not really a good analogy.
With computers, you use the tools you need.
With cooking, there are some meals that are universal (depending on area obviously).

I remember reading about these when reading Amiga word processor instructions and thinking what a cool idea it was. Still, is this still used today? I suppose you would if you still post paper out to a list of people. But is there a modern version where that packs a document into an email instead?

Otherwise in Amiga Terms you could use REXX to link WordWorth and YAm or something

I have perl based system for it which fetchs a n email database from my webserver and pushes out the emails via my standard mail address, but it doesn't personalise the emails, which I find to be bit false, when peolple know it a distribution list.

Mail merge is just a way of doing things, and in this case merging. Its not a lost art at all its the norm now just like spell check.

Alot of people also use DATA MERGE using windows office or VBscript especially automating effects for lots data.

A common feature for DATA merge is creating Planners and Calendars, one would calculate the dates needed in a spreadsheet and data merge with software that can accept a data merge.

For example one could create a website using data merge from the spreadsheet to list data or files.

One just have to search data merge on youtube for thousands of uses.

Some MMOGs use data merge for positioning and actions.

I work daily using DATA merge with multiple software & command scripts.
