| It seems AROS has evolved a lot since I last tried it. Before I again hit my head to brick wall or get otherwise disappointed...
x86..x64: -If building from parts, what parts to select TODAY? -Pre-built+installed+tested systems, from where?
ARM: -What board is the best buy for AROS today? -Pre-installed systems?
It would be cool if there would be a network of known gurus who to send a old x86 HW to see if it can be set up for AROS use (for some sane fee, like EUR99).
Often I find that my old NVidia card is not supported by default, and for example for linux, I would need to find old/custom kernel and certain driver version for it. Would be nice if some bounty or some other solution would be made to fund the building of more easy to setup AEROS/AROS releases, targetting older, previously supported HW. Or perhaps one just should be happy with 2D vesa if using old HW.... _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

for X86 you have this page: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Aros/Platforms/x86_support
in "comments" you find sometimes "64bit possible" so I assume that is related to Aros X64
X64 is (as I wrote) at the beginning what support (distributions, siftware and so on) is related
Generally you can use "Hosted" solutions, on X86 either Windows or Linux hosted, on X64 Linux hosted
on the aspireos site there are also some supported hardware. It should be still valid (but of course related to X86)

| btw. a little while I ago was looking for win8.1/win10 compatibility tester CD/DVD image but I did not find one.
Would it be insane job to have that kind of probe/test image for AROS/AEROS? It would be more user friendly than trial & error methode or disassembling the existing HW. Last edited by KimmoK on 21-May-2015 at 12:39 PM. Last edited by KimmoK on 21-May-2015 at 12:39 PM.

you can download f.e. Icaros and boot the ISO and see if it is supported. A real test-program would be nice but I fear it will not be created. I myselve use mostly "hosted" for my personal use.
There is always the problem that not everythings is fully supported. Arix was the idea to use a linux kernel to solve that problem, alternative you can use Linux hosted versions (there is even 3D accelleration on supported hardware as far as I know). That would be cool. Must try. My home office will anyway have one modernish Linux system always. ( I gave up trying to make linux to understand my old x86 laptop, winXP-pro will be the host on that then, rdesktop compatible and all.) UPDATE: another possible use (that I had forgotten) for my old laptop: http://www.hd-zone.com/amithlon/ Last edited by KimmoK on 21-May-2015 at 01:09 PM.

I have shortly looked. It uses "x11 accelerated graphics driver." on Linux hosted. But the hardware is pretty fast you can run it on you you do not miss very much. |

Yep. As long as it's 2D accelerated it should be nice enough to use. 3D is over-rated anyway. (in reality, I can do 3D stuff on many other HW that I have, my needs are not too great there, I just must remember not to try to demo any AROS 3D to anyone) _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

Horsepower solves (almost) everything
as long as you do not need 3D graphics like on the newest console games you have no problems. These propably even use different cores for parallel calculations. Everything else wil run perfectly on Hosted. I tested Antiryad on Windows hosted and it runs as fast as being installed as Windows application. I assume the same would be true for Linux hosted.
my fastest PC has 2.7 Ghz right now, there are even some with 3.0 Ghz and more. So resources are there. Last edited by OlafS25 on 21-May-2015 at 01:25 PM.

| Thanks so far. I will "probe" my HW with available AEROS.
+++++++++++++++ WANTED:
RPi2+AEROS bundle: -EUR50+EUR100 -boot1: all installed apps work without extra needs -3D? -OpenCL? -LibreOffice -AmigaForever -Handbreak (video/DVD) ... -boot2: experimental x64, all bells & whistless & DIY finetune extras etc. (30min trial later can be registered for extra cost)
HP280G1+AEROS bundle: -EUR220+EUR100 -boot1: all installed apps work without extra needs -3D? -OpenCL? -LibreOffice -AmigaForever -Handbreak (video/DVD) ... -boot2: experimental x64, all bells & whistless & DIY finetune extras etc. (30min trial later can be registered for extra cost)
available: -anywhere? -anyone? -when? -
++++++++++ from FAQ: Q: Where can I find an AROS Hardware Compatibility List? A: You can find one on the AROS Wiki page. There can be another lists made by the AROS users.
Some AROS fan perhaps should start a list of compatible HW, simpler than that on the wiki page.

I asked the same question some time back, and no-one seems to know. I have tried various nightly builds of AROS on various systems and have never been able to get graphics working properly. Sometimes the mode is set wrong; other times I just get a black screen.
I recommend hosting on Linux. You don't even have to install Linux; I have successfully booted Linux Mint from CD and run nightly builds of AROS on that._________________ "Unix is supposed to fix that." -- Jay Miner |
