The VAN-Player is a result of one of our ongoing projects (Dance Dance Revolution clone and Silpheed Clone for Amigas). Both use Videos as background but because videos have a fixed resolution, they look bad on lager screens.. We thought to use "Vectors" to allow unlimited upscaling. Also I wanted a Bad Apple demo on AROS ; )
The VAN-Player has been done with Fabio Falcucci's HGUI.
So VAN (Vector Animation)-Format was born. VAN's have the following advantages over pixel based movies: - unlimited upscale without quality-loss - small in size (similar to 480p h264) - compressible - platform independent because we used Hollywood - realtime effects and overlays can be added during playtime without the need to re-encode (which would be needed for pixel based videos)
Besides playback of those VAN's you can also run a build-in Bad-Apple demo showing realtime effects and a benchmark to compare your amiga with others.
"vanplayer -demo 1" will execute the demo mode "vanplayer -benchmark 1" will execute the benchmark and writes the results to a file called benchmark.txt
Of course you can also run a GUI player with "vanplayer" and load other VAN's (we will release some for testing)
A free encoder will follow (converting movies to VAN (b&w) only) A commercial encoder with support for colored movies will follow as service included in AmiCloud.

Van-Player is also part of Broadway Preview 2 which is available from the App Store as well.

The player is free and comes with a sample "bad apple" van. The black and white encoder will be free as well. Only if someone wants to create multicolor vans he would need to use a commercial service. But this more interesting for professionals (cartoon movies)

VAN codec allows to encode pixel based movies to vector based animations. Vectors can be scaled up unlimited without the effect of pixelation. VANs can contain a synced audio track or multiple ones (multilanguage)

I could need some beenchmark results because we plan on using this for a game

Hi can you please try vanplayer -benchmark -hardware 0 ?
If you run Vanplayer Does lt Launch ? Can you Click in the folder Symbol and Chose the Bad Apple Animation?
By default if you run only "vanplayer" lt doesnt use hw acceleration and i Hope will work everywhere.
To enable hardware acceleration you can run Vanplayer -hardware 1 But it may not work everywhere
The benchmark again tests both by default... (For now )

@kolla A Encoder will follow. A van-builder which works with svg material is done already and will be released soon but the interesting part is the vectorizing of existing Pixel based formats.. Problem is for now that Color Videos take ages to be converted (something i would like to offer via Amicloud .. to Close the circle).
A core2duo 2.53GHZ takes 3 days to convert a full movie(90min) to full Color van. Reminds me to the days where I converted DVD's to svcd : ) 15years ago on a Gen1 Pentium 3..

Everything works fine with vanplayer -benchmark -hardware 0 and using the default. although the -benchmark option didn't do anything.
one annoying little bug...
I left it running on workbench screen to flip to my ibrowse screen to type this and when the anim finished the Van playback window opened on the ibrowse (frontmost) screen. I had to go back to workbench and quit the player to get rid of it.
What system are you ising for hardware accelleration? I have no idea what hollywood uses now, I only have V4.7. For the OS4 build comopsiting would be best as you only need 2D rendering and it works on all NG hardware.

About the CPU usage we plan to use OpenGL next time to let the gpu do the work.
