Good evening everybody!

To make a long story short, I just finished assembling an Amiga 500 from parts found worldwide (had to go to Italy for the motherboard, go figure!) and turned it on. Surprisingly, it booted right up. (Haven't assembled a system from scratch in many moons!)

My problem is in the boot process. I'll try and post a picture or two, but in a nutshell, it finds the devices I have attached to the system, well 2/3 of them… it won't find the 1TB drive, but will find the DVD-RW and SSD. Immediately after that, I see this:

not available
not available
Hard Disk not found.
Press SPACE for menu ESC oe Q for prompt, Enter for boot source
Countdown…2 (then goes to 1)

I can't go any further.

I seem to remember reading somewhere about a keyboard issue where you have to unplug and replug, but that didn't help.

Any ideas? I'm hardly new to Amigas (have owned them since 1986) but I AM a SAM/PPC Amiga newbie. Go easy on me, please.

This project can wait until I get my Sec+ certification; I just wanted to put the system together and see what would happen.

I have a 3114 SATA controller (it's a RAID, not sure if it's set up that way or how to configure it not to be… instructions said nothing about it. I do have the first two devices set as the DVD and SSD. Yet it won't boot the FE disk. I can't get ito U-Boot to change the boot order…

Thanks a million guys, in advance. I've waited 15 years for one of these things, I can wait a little longer

@StantheAmigaMan

Is the 1TB drive connected to the onboard (motherboard) SATA? There is a conflict between onboard SATA and one of the PCI-E slots so it may be disabled.

@StantheAmigaMan

Not being able to help, I will at least bump this thread.

And of course...

Welcome!

Maybe this thread on Hyperion support forum will help?

@StantheAmigaMan

You should contact ACube-Systems, and get the user manual.

There DIP switch on motherboard to switch between onboard SATA and the PCIe 1x slot I believe. Also UBOOT should have been preconfigured to use predefined SATA ports.

Typing MENU in UBOOT should get into a confutation menu.

Some people use USB CDROM's.

@CarasGhant, and everyone else :)

I tried connecting each drive to the onboard SATA, one at a time. The system detected that device and no others. When I attached drives to the two ports on my 3114 card that were closest to the motherboard (the vertical ones) they're both detected. either the 1TB or the SSD, or both if I connect both to the vertical ports. The top two, which are labeled COM3 and COM4, are non responsive.

Nor will the system recognize any key I press. I've disconnected my KVM and connected keyboard/mouse directly, and nothing works. I might add the cards attached to the system work perfectly out of the box (with the exception of the horizontal SATA ports).

I'll post pictures when I get them uploaded. Maybe that will help. The PCI-e 1X slot is not being used, but apparently enabling the onboard SATA automatically disables any SATA card I attach.

Now I remember why I love Amiga, and got into development to begin with. I love a challenge. This is fixable and it's probably simple.

The internal USB ports are a separate issue altogether. the internal ports have all pins attached, and must USB cables I've seen have one pin blocked off. They simply won't fit. And I refuse to alter a $1000 board. :D Call me weird.

@NutsAboutAmiga

I have the user manual. It came with the system. I also downloaded and printed the same item from their website a week before the board arrived. Nothing in it covers this contingency.

I removed the jumper from J16 to enable the SATA Card. I'm attaching a series of links to the pictures I have. Maybe that will explain things better than I can.

http://sta.sh/0mbesntnk14
http://sta.sh/01ymbnxi8dfg

If what I am seeing is UBOOT, it will not recognize any keystrokes I type in, either natively or through a KVM/ (trying to use both MBP and Amiga from one set of inputs. Works for the MBP and Amiga (on video) so far. No reason to think the USB ports wouldn't work).

Do I have to do anything special to the board to have it recognize the USB ports in the back?

@StantheAmigaMan

Seems that you are limited to using 2 ports on the si3114 card.
Thus the si3512 cards work better.
Some keyboards may have issues with uboot especially the newest Uboot.
The motherboard USB connectors only have 8 pins so just connect the right way .

@Spectre660

The issues aren't SATA related, I don't think. The card recognizes both devices connected to ports 0/1 or 1/2 depending on how you call them. I haven't tried another USB keyboard I have, that might work.

It hasn't gotten to be frusrating yet. Probably won't be either. I used to live for this kind of trouble. I love figuring Amigas out and what makes them tick.

Have you looked at my links yet, in the previous response?

Yeah I have that one bookmarked. I can't even get it to boot to install AmigaOS 4.1 to begin with, let alone update the Uboot.

@StantheAmigaMan

Uboot is not finding the boot devices. You need a working keyboard to get into the Uboot menu and adjust them or to set the devices up to the default boot configuration in uboot.
If you got an OS 4.1 SDcard with your motherbord then you may be able to use it to boot without having to get in to uboot. the SDCard slot is at the bottom of the motherboard.

The default boot options for my first Amigaone 500/Sam460ex were :

boot1=usb
boot2=ssiicdrom
boot3=ssii

which indicates first option USB internal slot then either a cdrom or harddrive attached to the onboards sata drive. The last option won't work unless you have the OS already installed on the Hard drive before attempting to boot.
You should be able to boot from the OS 4.1 CD if the DVD drive is attached to the onboard sata port. The keyboard may work in OS 4.1 once it has been booted and it is possible to change the Uboot settings from OS 4.1. just leave the USB as the first boot option.

@Spectre660

For some reason it wasn't picking up the keyboard I had bought. mouse, yes. Keyboard, no. I switched to my Apple full-size keyboard and that portion worked.

I have since installed AmigaOS 4.1 on my 12GB Workbench partition, rebooted several times, just to be certain, switched the SATA cables to have the SSD be recognized first… and everything seems right.

Now… can anyone recommend a printer that would work with this system? I obviously can't use a USB printer as both ports are taken. Maybe an Ethernet printer? what about drivers?

@StantheAmigaMan

The Sam460ex motherbord has headers for 4 USB 2.0 ports as well as the 2 usb 2.0 ports at the back for a total of 6 ports.
You can use netprinter device for ethernet printers.

@Spectre660

I know the board has headers for USB 2.0, but the connectors won't fit the pins. there's an extra pin. May have to fit it on the pins in other ways.

Next step is getting the new uboot and seeing if that will help my data problem. :)

Thanks a ton for your assistance!!

Oh, one more question… do you know of anyone has Timberwolf working ? The LHA file at os4depot is corrupted.

@StantheAmigaMan

Motherboard USB 2.0 connectors are 8 pin.
Standard USB 2.0 connectors are 10 pin so your USB case connector should have 2 unused holes if it is USB 2.0.

Timberwolf should work if you unpack the main archive and then add these files to the program directory .

Thank you again!!

Will the printer drivers work with any networkable printer or any HP printer? If so I'll pick one up this weekend, or get a PCI-e 1x wireless card and use what I already have if they won't.

@StantheAmigaMan

The Printer needs to be PCL3 compatable .
Or one that supports Postscript using the AmigaOS 4.1 postscript driver .
Another option is Turboprint if you can find a copy .

Note that the support of the pciex1 slot is limited .
Only a few sound cards work with it under Amigaos 4.1 .
http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=39511&forum=14
The wireless cards do not work .
