Indeed, very impressive! And it's being given away free with a Pi magazine, apparently the first time a computer has been cover mounted on a magazine like that. _________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X |

Everywhere but on the Amiga "market"... That's too bad: any Amiga flavor would fly on such hardware. Especially compared with Linux.
And since it's so cheap, anyone could buy one (or several)._________________ http://www.warpdesign.fr/ |

| @Leo The public Version should just work on it: www.aeros-os.org
I am considering to "add a 5$ Pi" to the AEROS Plus Version on www.ares-shop.de

Well, the Raspberry people did show how to introduce a new computer platform in today's market. Make it insanely cheap... and also make it capable of doing more than you'd expect for the price.
This could have been the route Amiga companies took years ago, but of course they went the reverse.
Just think how cool it'd be to see an Amiga magazine on the shelves with a free Amiga included with every issue. |

Install AROS on it, and it is all what Amiga can be. _________________ B5D6A1D019D5D45BCC56F4782AC220D8B3E2A6CC |

| People seem to forget that the primary reason why RPi is successful is that it runs Linux - one of the most versatile and useful operating systems we have today. If there was a similar system, equally cheap, that was locked to running AmigaOS, it would not sell even a small fraction of what RPi is selling.
If you want a cheap Amiga system, install AROS on RPi already. _________________ B5D6A1D019D5D45BCC56F4782AC220D8B3E2A6CC |

If you're talking about the Pi-Zero, then not quite. It has no networking capability, so you'd have to buy plugin hardware (and header pins) to connect them together into a server farm. According to this comment, networking will add $15-$25 to the cost. It's rather ironic that the ethernet plugin is 3-5x the cost of the "motherboard." That's going to cut down the size of your server farm significantly.
I'm definitely impressed that they've managed to get the cost down to that level. I don't see it as comparable to a regular PC (which has a GPU with dedicated VRAM & faster storage devices, amongst other things), though.

yes of course it does not compare to a big box but it shows the trends in real world... either you have big power with more and more GHz and more cores or you get more and more for low money... either you compete on the hardware power or price. If you are not able to compete on either of them you are in serious trouble. I think I do not need to write more... |

have I forgotten to write "ironic" in it?
of course is a full system like X1000 more than this 5$ card but it shows where the market is going to |

Even more noteworthy is this one: Quote:
If you’re looking for cables to go with your free Zero, head over to the newly revamped Swag Store, where we’re offering a bundle comprising a mini-HDMI and a micro-USB adapter for just £4
|
So adapters to turn the shite form factor into a useable product ALSO costs more than the motherboard. £4 is about $6
And I have to join in with the crowd that says "so just install AROS already". Stop whining about lack of $5 Amigas, cause you just got one right there.
In before "but it doesn't run AOS4.x": Yeah, but if it did, certain people would STILL find something to nag about, so why bother.
Personally, I hated the RPi for not having good ethernet connectivity (ethernet over USB is not enough for me). This one is most assuredly not a step in the right direction for me.
And why is it that when OS4 is ported to an applications processor it's all "but it's not DESKTOP" yet this thing that literally IS an applications processor (with added RAM) sells in millions?_________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean. |
