Hi all

Does anyone know what screen res Banshee runs at. I have noticed this to be super clear on my LCD 17" benq via vga adapter. other games look quite pixelated which is a downside to using lcd screens.

@g01df1sh

On which hardware are you running it? An original AGA machine or through emulation?

@g01df1sh

That's a good question. I played it on my TV through an A1200. I would at first say 320. Though it doesn't use many layers of scrolling so it could be 640 as well.

I was actually given this game. I somehow got talking with my driving instructor years ago about the Amiga. And she mentioned she had Banshee from some guy. And as she had no need for it gave it to me. I enjoyed it. Wasn't it fun when the Amiga was a popular computer?

Banshee is old compared to T-Zero, so it would be 320x256

Although the intro screens use a Laced screen so could be 640x512 just for the them

It looks like 320x256 but being aga it probably uses more colours for an smoother antialiased effect rather than just single colour blocks.

From the Hall of Light:

On the title screen or during the intro, type 'FLEV17' and press 'RETURN'. This will give you infinite lives. Use the function keys to skip levels. The screen will flash letting you know it worked.

For a bit of fun on the title screen or during the intro, type 'I AM EXQUISITELY EVIL' and press 'RETURN'. This will change the names on the high score table and you can kill polar bears and people. The screen will flash letting you know it worked.

Yeah, I also think it's normal 320 x 2xx resolution, but being an AGA game graphics look much better compared to OCS games, because you don't have to use that much raster effects etc in graphics. Other AGA games like SlamTilt etc probably look good compared to older OCS games on your setup too.

I'm thinking the same thing. It most probably was a 320X2xx with a well used palette and some hand made antialiasing. It was one of the few games to really take advantage of the AGA Chipset.
I remember reading something like it used dual playfield with 128 colours for each screen. Throw in some wise copperlist and you have it.

@ErikBauer

That would be a fancy copper list as dual playfield on AGA would limit each screen to 16 colours. Unless it separated the score panel and scrolling playfield another way. Okay time to get the emulator and save state then make en examination of the hardware registers.

Yeah, T-Zer0 is a CD-ROM game and it can/should be installed to HD. And it has worked fine and seemingly bug free, and it has a quit option.. so there isn't any need to make a WHDLoad installer for it :)

@g01df1sh

By looking the game in action and the static pictures, it's clear that it's LORES 320x256 pixels, 6 bitplanes (64 colors) for the main graphics, 1 bitplane used for the effects (like fog), sprites used for the 64 pixels wide panels on the left.

@g01df1sh

Its standard low res, but with high res sprites for things like clouds. This was done for cheap effective see through effects, with every 2nd pixel transparent.

Also, lcd screens only look bad when not ratio exact. Low res 1440*900, 1680*1050, etc.
A 1280*1024 screen looks fine (exact multiples of amiga screenmodes), as does a medium res screen like 1920*1080, which will crop to a 4:3 display, then be an exact multiple with room for overscan.

I personally loathe the bluriness of something like a 1084 screen for anything but games. Oddly though, and Ive often wondered if Im alone here, but the smell invokes a great sense of nostalgia.

While the game is in Lores, as far as I can remember the title screen (the one with the Banshee logo) is in an odd Super Hires not interlaced resolution, i.e. 1280x256. It's probably the only game that used this resolution.

T-Zer0 is LOWRES 320x264x7 (i.e. 128 colors).
Please note that:
* also Banshee uses 7 bitplanes, although it uses the 7th for special effects (fog, rain, lighting) only;
* more colors doesn't mean better graphics.

I believe this is wrong. The clouds (fog, actually) were obtained by means of a 7th bitplane. But I haven't seen the whole game, so maybe I missed that sort of clouds. Can you show a picture, please?

Nope, the intro and title screens were 640x256. But they they do have the distinctive "vertical" look of the rectangular pixels, so that's probably what fooled you.
