Hello everybody,

I will be a new Amiga user shortly. I ordered last week a X5000 unit from Amiga on the Lake and hopefully it will be in soon.

I'm very knowledgeable with both pc and mac but have never used an Amiga before. Very excited to get this machine in and tinker with it and the OS.

Any good tutorials for a total newbie on this?

I hope to contribute some to the amiga world in my journeys later on.

Thank you!

@icedigger

Wow, new blood.

If you encounter any problems, AmigaWorld.net is the right place to ask.

Epsilon´s blog provides many informations (and pictures) about AmigaOne/OS4.

There is also AmigaOS wiki with user and developer documentation.

Note AmigaOS (even in version 4) is still in important aspects OS of the past (eg. only limited memory protection, no SMP yet etc.) with user interface configured for rather conservative Amiga users. It may be unusual for Windows or Mac users, but I hope you will enjoy discovering this entire new world.

Amiga platform has many flavours - classic, NG, emulation or even AmigaOS compatible OSs like AROS and MorphOS... However, be warned, not all of their supporters are friendly to each other.

And of course...

Welcome!

why not. actually this might be a chance for os4 to establish itself as an independant platform, which by all means would be advantageous if possible. young people who never knew the genuine platform and its constraints, rather than repeatedly trying to justify its exstence as a valid successor of some long discontinued product. we already have some such exaples, of whom few have occured to be the most standfest os4 appologists.

But in real life it just means there is more insane people than just me?)

Hi and welcome Icedigger! Congratulations on your purchase and hope you'll have a lot of fun with your new computer. I'm hoping to get a new AmigaOne as well this year. Be sure to check OS4Depot.net and Aminet.net for new files. ;)

Things with Amiga are more or like using for the first time a bidet...

First you got frustrated, and yell "Why the heck I am doing this!"

Then you are more like "How could I miss it all this time! And how I could had missed this sensation of being clean and fresh all over my body!"

This feel is joint together with the necessity of make good use of your fantasy to supply to the various things and features that evolved in Mac and in Windows and are still at early stage on Amiga due to lack of developers and the satisfaction when you achieve the same results that you may obtaining in more advanced OSes...

Are you ready for the adventure?

just to be fair, all amiga follow up projects today, inclusive os4, cannot be perceived as professional ventures. the expectations must be adjusted accordingly to reflect their hobby/experimental status. people really shouldnt be told that amiga was always like that.

Welcome icedigger! Let us know if you have any questions at all. I recently got an X5000 as well - you will have a blast!

You mentioned education - are you currently going to school now and are you studying computer science/IT?

edit: or was your "education" comment was in jest ?? Just wondering if we are talking to a future coder. :)
