The world goes mad for the retirement of MS Paint for some reason! Surely everyone just downloads GIMP if they want a free paint program on the PC in 2017? Deluxe Paint by comparison is pretty much forgotten despite being far more useful than MS Paint! Good ridance!

@Jose

MS = Microsoft; the world's biggest software developer.

MSM = Multimedia Messaging Service

I can't see how the two are related to be honest

@BigD

I use MSPaint mainly for simple picture operations (resize, crop, save in specific format) and of course for saving screenshots via print-screen key (which is possible by other means too). It is fast and stable application, I really hope its replacement will offer the same features with similar ease of use.

@BigD

Paint was absolutely crap - until Windows 7, when it became reasonably useful.

Are they bundling a replacement, I wonder?

Although, as you say, it's easy enough to download GIMP

@OldAmigan

They seem to view Paint 3D as the new bundled replacement, I think it's part of the free Windows 10 Creators Update made in April.

Wasn't MS Paint a curse word for amigans always? So I feel good if it's gone :D

I've of course heard of it, but never tried it... no option for that :)

@Templario

Do you mean this explanation?

https://liliputing.com/2017/07/windows-10-fall-update-puts-ms-paint-outlook-express-chopping-block.html

Quote:
Microsoft Paint is being deprecated, which means it’ll still be available, but development has ended and the app’s days may be numbered.

False alarm then at the moment it'll still be available. I suppose the changes to Outlook may be more far reaching!

Quote:
Outlook Express is being removed from Windows altogether. The Reader and Reading List apps are being killed… but their functionality will be added to the Edge web browser.

@BigD

That's Outlook Express, which was always a POS and good riddance to it. There's a bundled Mail app which replaces that anyway. Paint doesn't have a replacement yet, unless you count 3D Paint (and I don't, it's useless for the simple crop/resize operations I use Paint for and GIMP is overkill and takes too long to start up).

@BigD

Well Microsoft has not given up pushing the mobile GUI to desktop; I noticed few new apps, popping up at my work pc, mostly useless, because the interface takes lot clicks, to do simple things. Optimized for tiny space, result poor access, optimized for large space = not usable on mobile devices.

Right

Well, MS Paint was a competitor to Amiga Paint software even though basic MOST Windows users used it even if rarely. It obviously had a place in users' hearts because it was probably as small and useful as Windows programs ever got!

@BigD

MMS = Multimedia Messaging Service, not MSM.

Anyway, it's a bit of a strange poll - they're not really competitors and are aimed at totally different things. Paint is handy for doing quick screenshot crops, which it what I use it for. To do that in Deluxe Paint makes absolutely no sense. The reason there's much more noise about it is that practically everyone knows it, hundreds of millions of people have used it, and it's installed on billions of machines. DPaint? Nowhere near as ubiquitous.

Obviously DPaint is far more advanced and capable, but it's also for a different platform, aimed at a different market, designed for a different purpose, and resides in a different century. To compare them as if they were competitors is just strange.

@Daedalus

Deluxe Paint was an industry standard for game development and a killer app on the Amiga and also with a (bad) PC port. MS Paint was a little program people used to doodle on. If I wanted to crop something on a PC I'd use GIMP so I guess that's the true competitor which IMHO GIMP would win hands down.

With Windows 10 MS includes a little 3D program to make little renders the surprise is if you want render your own models the MS store appear with the solution buying the full version or extra models. MS present us Windows 10 to caugh with the MS store.

@Templario

I'm guessing you're saying you have to buy the full version of Paint 3D to render images properly?

Here Microsoft clarify that Paint will still be available to download;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-40714395

... oh well I guess it was an excuse for FoxyMulderX to get their MS Paint art out there!

Yep, that's my point. However, DPaint has long since been replaced and therefore forgotten (especially in the eyes of Joe Public).

It depends on your measure of "winning". If you mean pretty much any feature you could possibly want, then GIMP wind hands down. If your measure is being able to take a screenshot, crop it and save it as a PNG in less time than it takes to start GIMP, then Paint wins. A Swiss army knife is great and all, but sometimes all you want is a spoon.
