Hi All

I have put A 20gig HD in my A1200 which only has 3.0 roms in at the minute. I can only see the first 3.8GB partition is this a limitation of the 3.0 Roms?

Sort of yes (same for 3.1). However, you can use newer scsi device and filesystem even on pre-OS3.5. Note only first 4 GB can be used for the boot partition.

You should get your A1200 the upgraded Kickstart 3.X + Workbench 3.1 from Cloanto (important!). It brings support for large disks directly from Power-On, among a few other improvements. No setpatch or reboot required! Your A1200 is worth it!

Kickstart 3.X

Cloanto's Workbench 3.1

(You'll need both)

@TRIPOS

Important to note, this KS/WB combination has workbench.library on the disk, not in ROM (as most Amigas), which may be not ideal in some cases (eg. emergency situations).

If he wants to use disks bigger than 4 GB, he doesn´t need to waste his money, patches for OS3.0/3.1 are free of charge.

@g01df1sh

Another option is Elbox's Fast ATA MK III/IV/V IDE controller. It supports very large partitions and hard drives sizes, and multiple drives. Plus you get better performance as well.

It works on any A1200.

@g01df1sh

The Kickstart 3.X builds on the original Kickstart 3.1 ROM components and features the following improvements:

  • Patches originally released under the ESCOM and Gateway Amiga ownership - no SetPatch or reboot required

  • scsi.device and exec.library updates by Alexander Benedictov, Chris Hodges, Heinz Wrobel and Toni Wilen

  • expansion.library fixes by Jeff Weeks

  • FastFileSystem fixes by Etienne Vogt

  • mathieeesingbas.library fixes by Harry "Piru" Sintonen

  • The scsi.device updates included in the 3.X ROM make it possible to boot from disks larger than 4 GB. Additional elements, such as FastFileSystem 45.9 and Installer 44.10, are included in the [Cloanto] Classic Support Workbench 3.1 distribution, and complement the ROM-based enhancements (see below).

In a careful balance of preservation, restoration and innovation, fixes and features of [Cloanto's] Workbench 3.1 include:
  • Dates were preserved, while file attributes and comments were restored (relative to the distribution by ESCOM, Village Tronic and Vesalia Computer)

  • Updated C/Version command (Y2K patch)

  • Addition of Libs/workbench.library (for A4000T 3.1 ROMs and 3.X ROMs)

  • Updated S/Startup-Sequence (conditional SetPatch, for 3.X ROMs)

  • Updated Installer 44.10 and FastFileSystem 45.9 (to support larger disks)

  • Installer itself is now part of the system installation (inside the Utilities directory)

You use these Cloanto-versions of the Kickstart and Workbench in pair to get the cleanest possible setup, created by acknowledged preservation enthusiasts, where even things like having the correct date stamps on files are details that matters. No hack'n patch, no reboots, no hazzle, no problems whatsoever. Just power your computer on, and things like large disk support is just there! It's the ideal situation!

€17.90 + €15.50 is virtually o money for this. Your A1200 is easily worth it!

Don't worry guys will be getting roms soon. My tower Amiga has them already but that project has been stressing me out so have stepped away for a bit.

Have a new Cloanto ROM & OS kit coming for both my A2000 & 4000T rebuilds. Next item is to get the MB's to Acill. This should be nice

@TRIPOS

I presume they've fixed the bug in 3.X ROMs that stopped floppy drives from working in some machines? Having the replacement scsi.device in ROM is indeed handy, but it's not a huge deal to use LoadModule either, and is actually 0 money as opposed to virtually 0 money.
