I really will be amazed if someone, one day, will create a C64 Next computer, like the ZX Spectrum Next.

Although i like the c64 mini, i really could go crazy for a C64 real hardware (not emulated), FPGA based too, and with a real old original brown case.

@AmigaBlitter

Sounds a good idea, you never know maybe someone will.

I'd still like to get the Spectrum Next and was going to wait for the new year but it seems all they had allocated have already sold out. My only hope is they go on to build more as I don't intend to pay some unscrupulous ebayer over the retail price for one as I'm sure some will appear. That is as long as they ship and don't suffer the same fate as Spectrum Vega plus.

@apsturk

Why the Commodore 65 (versus the uber famous Commodore 64)?

Something like the Ultimate-64? It doesn't come with case and keyboard though.

As per the C64 reloaded... you have to add some chip, don't you?

And i think that the brown case still missing.

@AmigaMac

Because the C65 was (kind of) an extension of the C64? Kind of as most kinds of C64 optimization would make the software incompatible with the C65.

My impression was that the Mega65 will have better compatibility than the C65.

I've always wanted to take the Linux kernel and slap a modern basic on it and call it the Commodore 64000. :)

There are modern BASIC Variants for Linux, but sadly no Basic available that could be used as console.

@kamelit0

No Amiga = the Atari 8 bit Next. Many similarities in design philosophy.

The C64 is only related to the Amiga in that Commodore produced and sold them.

That was my thought as well. Seeing as this was the time employees swapped companies the Atari ST is more the follow up to the C64.

The Atari and the C64 hardware are sharing some minor parts on their design philosophy ( DIN-Connectors, proprietary interfaces, ...) but they are very different from the OS view.

The C64 is using a BASIC interpreter as console, where the Atari has a CPM like OS with GUI on top. The Amiga is even farer away from the C64, but it was the 'next' home computer to be sold by Commodore.

When the C64 was cancelled, it might have been the last home computer with a built in BASIC interpreter as command shell.

@O64 Fans

I was wrong, there is some kind of Computer OS booting directly into a BASIC shell.

It is an OS/Distro called IchigoJam BASIC and it is available for the RaspberryPi.
