The state of 3D - AmigaOne/OS4?

Hello everybody. I've been browsing the forums for a few days and it's beginning to make me nostalgic beyond tolerance. It's been more than 7 years since I lost my A1200 (long story) but I've almost convinced myself to buy into the new platform. My question is this... what is the current state of 3D acceleration with OpenGL on an A1/OS4 development machine? My lightweight game engine currently supports Win32 and OSX, but I keep getting this feeling that I'd rather be doing that on an Amiga. Thanks for any info in advance.

@PolygonSoup

No 3d at all atm but it is a work in progress.

No OGL is planned for the immediate future since the specs for 2.0 seem to be a bit vague.

Anyway Nova is what we're waiting for and I'm pretty sure it will be ready for the OS4 official release.

Not sure about a native warpup version or if we were going to have to rely on emulation of the 68k version.

Just a few points that I may have remembered completely wrong so don't quote me on any of this.

@Steff

It's been stated lots of times that NOVA is for 4.1 or beond not 4.0
Warp3D on the other hand will be in OS4 final. And it will be PPC native.

I seem to recall one of the Hyperion guys saying that W3D Nova would NOT make it to 4.0?
I`d like to be wrong though . . .

@PolygonSoup

Right now their are no 3D drivers for the A1 (however do not be frigthen ) Hyperion has the situation well in hand. As per Hyperion they are working to release a package called Nova( any one feel free to correct me if I am wrong on some of theses points) will bring amazing 3D capabilities to the A1.

Currently if I am not mistaken Nova is in beta testing. Additional2D drivers are being worked on by a awesome company call SNAP( which by the way have a great reputaton for creating 2D drivers for various platforms and vendors). This will let the A1 support a great number of cards.

But as of right now the ATI 7000 to 9000 lines of card are supported without 3D drivers. But don't let this stop you from joining in and coding for the A1 we need all availible Amiga coders to help so please take the dive you won't regret it.

Your not. I guess he mixed Nova up with Warp3D.

@Nickman

thanks for the clearing of that up guys. So Nova will be a AOS4.1 thing- okay.

As far as warp up ( a native PPC version I assume) will open GL support be availible? I thought that Rouge mention someting about Mesa( a OGL port or so). can anyone shed more light on this?

Thanks a Million.

OpenGL will be available through Mesa and through MiniGL.

@PolygonSoup

We're currently still woring on finalizing the current Warp3D, which is our own native driver system. We're currently supporting the Permedia 2, Voodoo 3, 4 and 5, and the Radeon 7x00 series. The Radeon 8x00 and 9x00 will follow shortly.

We are working on two OpenGL options for OS 4, one is a full-fledged Mesa port, the other is MiniGL, our own small OpenGL subset. MiniGL is as good as finished, while Mesa will stil take some time.

We're hoping to release the drivers really soon now.

edit: Forgot to mention: For OS 4.1 and beyond we plan to replace the current Warp3D with something that has the project title "Nova". Nova will be a new API that is based entirely on shader languages, with the fixed function setup being a special case rather than the rule. However, it will not be ready for OS 4.0.

@Rogue

Warp3D, OpenGL, MiniGL sounds very good to me
GFX projects for after 4.0 sounds even better

BTW how far has SNAP development for AOS4 come now? Will it be finished for AOS4 final?

The system itself is more or less working (minus a few glitches), it still needs to be wrapped into a Picasso96 monitor driver, and tested extensively. We'll see how this works out. My guess is it will be ready for 4.0 though you can never be sure enough.

Wow, that's the very answer i've waiting for! That just excellent news! What is the best Radeon card that you suggest the A1 users should have, in order to get the best out of it with your support, both in OS4.0 and both in any future OS4+?

Should most have the Radeon 9200, or should we go for the 9800?

@Helgis

Of course you should buy a 9800Pro supporting voltage of
2x, 4x & 8x AGP.. A 256MB if you can afford. This way you
can upgade automatically, when you get a new motherboard
ie. 4x AGP and 8x AGP, with each software release using more
and more of the cards power.
Almost like a lifetime purchase!

6 months ago when support for 9600/9800 cards where not
really clear I would not have made this statement. But with
Rogue's statements about 3D support lately has made me
alot more confident that all ATI chips from R100 through to
R350 will be supported, maybe R300/350 will take a little more
time to make full use of. But it will come

Thanks Rogue btw. And thanks also to all the rest of the fantastic
OS4 team.

Woow.. Stop the presses! I read this one more time and understood your
statements a little different.

So you HAVE a release date in mind? Not the usual "WHEN IT'S DONE" stuff.

If you can't make SNAP work correctly before the release date you'll release
OS4 as is and incorporate SNAP in 4.1 instead?
I just thought OS4.0 development could go on forever until all the features you
wanted in were finished. I thought that's what "When it's done" meant.

Or have I misread your quote?

Still most AOne owners would already have a graphics card already right now and the longer you wait the cheaper these cards will become.

Even with 3D drivers you would need some 3D app to use it with.

Hopefully Hyperion will release some games at the same time but it's not certain they would need anything better than what you already have in your computer anyway.

So I would say that waiting is the best game you can play if you're planning on buying another graphics card.
