You have 10 people to take to dinner, alive or dead, known to you or not. Fictitious characters are the only exclusion. Myself I like to be intellectually stimulated so I would have a table of clever people but not necessarily the typical (i.e. Einstein) as a lot of clever people can be hard to communicate with.

Here is my list:

1: Bill Gates - I think the guy is actually very interesting.
2: Bud - a mate of mine who passed away, a great engineering and economic mind).
3: DaveP (Wiffy) we have had lunch, he is a great guy
4: Jim (my boss) we get very political, I love a political debate
5: Cliff Richard - all round nice guy and has a real insight to modern life, being a rocknroll artist also a christian.
6: Jay Miner - I am interested in fundamental computing, this guy built machines from the ground up, I have listened to that famous interview and hung on his every word, I didn't want it to end.
7: Tom (colleague from work), we really do get along well and the guy has an objective stance on life, we don't socialise too much but I do work with him closely and look forward tot he conversation.
8: James (finance guy at work) I have been really lucky to be close to the most talented people at work. James and I often debate engineering and suchlike things as well as women and suchlike that make life interesting.
9: Patrick Moore another great person and a real gentleman, we would enjoy listening to space stories at the table from this guy (some might find it boring but not the 10 people listening to him).
10: Patrick Stewart - He interviews well, I as having a hard time thinking of a 10th and decided that although his characters did appeal to me, I would like to hear some of his stories as his acting seems to portray a man with a wide interest.

Strange I could not think of any females who I would not just have there for their beauty, I am sure there are some inspirational women out there, I just can't think who would be perfect on my table.

What are your top 10?

Actually... I would rather cook for your dinner party, if you ever have it...

I can think of quite a few inspirational women, myself. But then, I know quite a few...

10? That's tricky...

I know that Richard Whiteley would have to be amongst them... probably along with Carol Vorderman, so she could show us some cool maths tricks written on the napkins

Perhaps also GWB and Tony Bliar; I'd sit them at opposite ends of the table, instruct nobody to speak to them or refer to them by name, and would only feed them the leftover scraps that the others don't want.

Jay Miner or Dave Haynie would have some interesting anecdotes, perhaps also Woz or Jobs... dunno that I'd invite all of them; it'd get way too geeky. Perhaps I *would* invite them all, and also BillyG... light blue touch paper, retire to a safe distance...

One more? Hmm...

'celebs' in general are a complete waste of time.

Id have to echo some of Mikes here ( and thank him ).

Guests, in no particular order:

1. Nick Mason - most often the quiet member of TPF in public, I want to find out what this guy has to say. Behind that smile lurks a thousand stories.

2. Sean Bean - one of the nicest guys in the public eye, never less than excellent at any acting role he is cast for plus he climbs mountains rather than takes a helicopter.

3. Jeremy Paxman - just because I think in a political argument I would have a fair chance of beating him

4. Jeremy Clarkson - because I dislike him intensly, even if he is a lad, and you have to have friction at a dinner party.

5. A1200 - ( Mike ) because hes a great guy to be around.

6. Jeff Minter - So he can explain the llamas to me.

7. James Gandolfini - so I can call him gandalf to his face to see what would happen.

8. Edie Falco - to keep James in check when I call him gandalf.

9. Bob Geldof - for being someone who I have been quite rude about in the past 10 years but has changed my mind. It would be my way of apologising and thanking him ( not that he gives two hoots about my views ).

10. Terry Pratchett - you need to ask why?

Einstein was well known for his ability to communicate complex subjects, he'd probably be a lot less well known if couldn't.

With that, a list:

Einstein
- I'm a big fan

Seymour Cray
- If there's a god in the computer hardware world it's him. If you look at the most advanced technologies in use for boosting performance today, he was using them decades ago. The Cell contains a lot of Cray-isms.

Jay Miner
- Now where do I know that name from

Ian Stewart
- English mathematician and author, expert on Chaos theory.

Stephen Wolfram
- So what is this "New kind of science" thing all about?

Stanley Kubric
- Film director

Rupet Hine
- Record producer

Mike Oldfield
- Musician

Carl Sagen
- Scientist, Author, broadcaster.

Arthur C Clarke
- Author

Many self taught, in some cases they couldn't be taught because they did the inventing. All highly creative people, nobody conventional. All at the very top of their field.

If I could add one more it would be:

Jeri Ellisworth
- (think C-One) Met her in Aachen in 1992, very smart woman. Watched a video of her talk at Stanford a while back, fascinating stuff. Not as well known as the others but I think she's just warming up...

Heh, interesting topic. One that I'm SURE I'll change my initial #s, but this is cute:

What's your point?

Hmm...they would HAVE to be at different times.

Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Einstein (ok, they can be at one table/time).
George Bush and his Daddy. Just so I could videotape it to laugh later.
Dave Haynie, Bill Gates, Linux Torvalds, and a VC with a lot of $ (yes, at same table, same time). I want to see the sparks fly, and maybe something interesting could come of it.

Sandra Bullock and Michelle Pfeiffer (yes, MP is getting old, but who cares? )

Well, that's more than 10, but oh well

hmm...let's see...

Nick Cave
Neil Gaiman
Dave Sim
Arthur Miller
Philip K. Dick
Liszt
Ridley Scott
Philip Glass
Rutger Hauer

These are all people I know enough about to know that I would find conversation with them fascinating. I'm also fairly certain that they would all be capable of appreciating each others views on some level (although Dave Sim would probably wind up starting a bit of an argument) that they could be fairly civil in the conversation...woohoo! only 2 of them are dead.

Wouldn't it be more fun to have it be an Amiga function. Say, all AW.net members?

@A1200

Patrick Moore - read his autobiography. This man has led a very interesting life, and comes across as the nicest chap you'd ever meet. My uncle has taken his boys club along to see him before, and he insisted on not letting anyone leave until they'd all had hot chocolate.

Lord Horatio Nelson - the greatest Britain in my opinion. This man was loyal to his country until his death, and was a great naval tactician. Knew that even the lowest ranking man on the ship was indispensible.

Winston Churchill - second only to Nelson. An excellent public speaker, and hugely inspirational. Would Britain have won the war without him?

Jeremy Clarkson - one of the funniest men on television. Blunt and to the point. I can see him being very annoying at times, though he may be humbled by the other guests!

Andy McNab - knew that his life was heading for trouble as a teenager, knew that he had to set himself right. So he joined the army, and became the best of the best - a member of the SAS.

Arthur C. Clarke - what must go on in this man's head? A true genius.

Douglas Adams - very similar to Arthur C. Clarke in my description!

Peter Molyneux - not just a games programmer, but a visionary who tries to look ahead in gaming, rather than evolve previous gaming genres.

Can't think of another two right now, but I may add them later!
