| I just got a 19-in-1 card reader for my AmigaOne. Its the kind that mounts in a 3.5" floppy drive space. Previously, I had had a front panel dual USB port connected to the headers in my uA1-c and both USB ports on the front panel worked fine. I plugged in the card reader and it worked. I was able to insert both a MMC card and a smart media card and read them. This reader connects to both USB ports via a dual header. The wires indicate that the wiring on the left and right side are identical. It states that it is designed for USB 2.0 however, and it has a front panel USB pass through. The USB pass through did not work. Since I want to have the availability of USB ports on the front, I switched back to my two original USB port cables...being careful to reinstall them exactly the way they had been installed when I first built my AmigaOne. Now neither of my front panel USB ports work! I can plug a memory stick into the rear ports after starting USB-Start and it is seen just fine. Nothing is seen from the front ports. It looks like maybe there is no power either (I need to double check this). What could have happened? Could a USB 2.0 device fry my USB 1.1 ports?

| Duh!
Looking at my previous post...the problem becomes apparent. The uA1-c USB headers are wired in opposite directions (everyone knows that...right!) When I plugged the card reader in, its wiring assumed the same direction for both rows of pins. It resulted in shorting out my USB +5 and ground. After letting my AmigaOne sit for a while however, using my original wiring dual USB panel...my front panel ports now work again!
Lesson learned....be careful of pre-wired USB headers from 3rd parties!

That was the one thing that scared me when I wired up my micro in my Aria case. The headers are 4 pin & my connectors were 5 pin. Not only did I have to hook then up reversed, but one pin offset to boot. The Aria came with a v2 USB card reader, but no pass through, so only one front panel USB port works as does the card reader. Glad you got it sorted without any damage. _________________ Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

By the way...
The official ua1 manual from eyetech doesn't show the right wiring for the front USB port! Only the unofficial manual (as found on intuitionbase) mentions the opposite thing (sic). |

It doesn't?? I wired the USB front ports according to the printed MAI docs I got with the motherboard, and both ports work fine. I just swapped around all four wires on one side of the header so as to match the pinout on the motherboard. |

I didn't know there was an "official" manual from Eyetech. My micro board came without any documents at all. I have seen the pdf file from MAI though. The USB pinouts in it are correct, but the serial port pinouts are wrong.
Another source of the correct pinouts is the article I wrote. It can be seen at http://ncscaug.us/ua1page1.htm It covers re-arranging your USB header wires, the correct pinouts for the serial port, and a few other details as well.
Have Fun, LyleHaze

Thanks, I'd never seen that.. and yes, the USB pinouts in it are wrong!
[edit] so are the serial pinouts.. Doh!!
I'm beginning to think that the drive for accurate documentation is a losing battle. We "little folks" out here in the real world are trying to promote accurate information, but with folks like Eyetech and MAI (the two companies that should know better) feeding wrong info, we may never get on top of this.
Well, I published my article only after physically and operationally verifying every last connection. I guess I'm doing my part.
I wonder if Eyetech is aware of the error, and if they are willing to update the document? I'd need to double-check the serial port, too.
Thanks for the documents, LyleHaze Last edited by lylehaze on 08-Sep-2005 at 09:34 PM.

The micro documents listed by #6 include the MAI document with the wrong serial pinout, and the Eyetech one with bad serial and USB pinouts.
Warning, Opinion follows:
It is my opinion that we, as a community, must do whatever we can to correct this bad documentation, or at minimum clearly label the errors they contain, so that others won't have to repeat this "discovery".
I'm open for suggestions on how we can correct these false documents.
Any ideas?
Lyle

If you decide to draw up a list of known documents for comment I suggest:
Before commenting on them, list them by the actual document title, assuming all document titles are unique, of course. Also list them by the "known" file names that are associated with said document.
Otherwise, a general reference to a particular subject or doc could be confusing.
Best Wishes, #6
