@WOSPUPOS4

I think that an OS4 version for classic Amigas, would be a GREAT thing...
In that way we will double (or triple) os4 base users and the potentially developer users....
However seems that OS4 developers/ouners isnt of that advice...

@Tuxedo

yeah i have alot of cash waiting to be spent on OS4 stuff right now. But i don't want to spend it if i can't use it.

I hope the Classic version will get more priority now that the A1 version is considered more or less final.

I don't wanna start a fight but I can't understand why more people can't let go of the classic a little more.

I know there are new boards coming for classic but new hardware designers must find it extremely difficult to justify creating new hardware when so many of us can't let go of the old hardware.

I chose to order & purchase an A1 LONG before it's release to try & contribute to a new platform & show that there just might be a customer out there.

Maybe because it's impossible to buy an all new OS4 capable computer even if one wants to?

And i don't understand the hostile feelings against people wanting to use there hobby computer a bit longer.

Isn't it better to have more OS4 users and developers ?
Do they HAVE to be nextgen HW buyers to count ?

Classic amigas with PPC are quite common and that would mean a lot of sales for OS4 without investing on boards that may or may not have bugs, or just boards that may or may not be bought due to its high price. In contrast people already have PPC amigas and they probably won't get rid of them as it allows them to run every software amiga-related.

@WOSPUPOS4

There's no hostility, at all. It's just that if everybody with classics
choose to not upgrade OS4 will die with the first version, simple as that.

@Crumb

That's why Hyperion shouldn't release OS4 for classics.
If everyone keeps their classics the new hardware manufacturer will not
survive and OS4 dies with it.

I know it's too late to not release it now as they have promised for several
years to do so.

I'm inclined to disagree with you here. The kind of people who have ppc hardware in their classics are not just casual users. They are the sort of people who are prepared to spend money on their systems and will likely upgrade to more powerful hardware when it's available.

That contradicts the very thing you say. As the A1's runs circle round any classic
machine why didn't they upgrade yet?

having and wanting to run AOS4 on a classic machine doesn't mean you can't have an AmigaOne aswell. I have an AmigaOne, but i'd never ditch my classic. Way to many things I enjoy will never run on an AmigaOne without UAE.

1. To expensive (uA1 and A1XE. The troika card looks nice though. So does the vixxen.Will probobly buy atlest one of them. Maybe both. But i will still keep my BPPC)

2. Nothing availble. (Now that is not true. I HAVE a machine right beside me now that can run AmigaOS4.)

Perhaps they bought a house or car that year. Or maybe lost their job.

Perhaps they waited for the Industrial version that never showed up.

Does it really matter now? Either way, they're well out of luck.

@Samwel

I disagree. I've got several classic Amigas from 500 to 4000. I've got the Phase5 PPC with the 68060 board in my A4000 with OS3.9 and I very much plan on purchasing new hardware to run OS4.0 on. I would also like to purchase OS4.0 for my A4000 too.

If it were available I would already have one of the new hardware machines or one of the many different proposed hardware upgrades.

I wish Hyperion and each of the different hardware manufacturers success and want them to know that I will be supporting each of them as much as I can.

Or just like me.

I had the choice between an amiga One and the PegasosII. I made the $50 Coupon for the AmigaOS 4.0 and bought the PegII. I really beleived the promises that AmigaOS 4.0 will be released before the Amiga One version. I even got confirmation at the local OS4.0 Presentation here at Basel (Switzerland), where Amiga OS4.0 was shown on an A4000 with CyberstomPPC.

BUT I let the $50 go down the drain (well I got at least a T-Shirt I'll never wear )

For now I have installed MorphPowerUP on the A4000T.

Making new hardware "for" AmigaOS is not commercially justified, period.

If AmigaOS4+ is only meant to be a means of selling pointless niche hardware, or if we users or Hyperion are even supposed to take the well-being of those "businesses" in consideration, then the AOS4 project may just as well be cancelled now.

We (the users and potential users of all "amigoid" OSes) are a miniscule niche, especially as long as we have to pay extra for "special" hardware on an artificially separated hardware market, and most of those who were prepared to pay that price bought their "AmigaOnes" already. Hobbyists and enthusiasts like Troika or ACK might make something too, but those things are irrelevant, if they're not doing it for fun but because they think it's a business opportunity then they're insane.

The number of existing Amigas with PPC cards possibly outnumber all the hardware options mentioned above five-fold. For some bizarre reason AInc and/or Eyetech and/or Hyperion once apparently believed that the AOS4-for-"AmigaOne" idea made commercial sense. That must mean they can't dismiss AOS4-for-Amigas since it would make even better sense, not to mention Macs or Pegasoses. (Or x86, now that PPC-on-the-consumer-desktop is all but dead.)

I hope you bought it more because you personally wanted and/or needed it, and that you personally are happy with it, since the project failed just as miserably as was predicted. (It failed even worse than my own predictions, I thought they'd hit the roof of their pseudo-market within 1 year with maybe 2,000 units sold, but they failed to sell even that puny number in 4 years).

@Samwel:

People will obviously not buy "new" overpriced underperforming outdated hardware on a monopolised pseudo-market just to run AmigaOS. If this really wasn't clear before the "AmigaOne" experiment, then it should be clear now. People aren't more likely to become AmigaOS4 customers if hardware options are removed (be it Amigas+PPC, Pegs, Macs or whatever).

I'll put it bluntly: The problem, and what's killing AmigaOS, isn't that people won't buy crap on a crap market, this is obvious and natural and can't be changed. The problem is that AmigaOS has been tied to crap on a crap market by the compulsory hardware licensing scheme. This can be changed, and those ties need to be cut.

I said I didn't wanna start a fight. I just think we should be moving on.

People buy new Macs, people buy new consoles, people CONSTANTLY buy new PC hardware, new cars, new MP3 players, new graphics cards, new TV's, new DVD players & recorders.

I don't understand why we try so hard to hold onto our old machines. Granted, they could run OS4, but should they is another question.

I invested thousands in my classic Amiga in the 13-15 odd years I had one. I'm amazed I managed to get THAT much use out of a classic, but I decided to move on & pre order my A1 when it was originally dubbed to be a classic upgrade.

Whether or not new hardware is available right now or not shouldn't matter. Companies need to know we plan to buy their product if they plan to make it.

FuZion.
