”must” is a too strong word, Hyperion is better of taking contact early on, to get documentations on the Cell, but whit out the hw, Hyperion have no use for the documentation unless IBM can build HW and willing to pay for the OS port, but that’s unlikely.
Than maybe this tread is as useless as most treads, maybe Hyperion is in contact whit IBM and frees scale on number of subjects, Including the CELL.

IBM provide a Cell SDK that includes a simulator. This is what they used to develop and test software for it before the physical device was actually finished. So long as hardware is coming, that SDK could be used.

I voted 'I don't know'.
I think that the people at Hyperion are quite capable themselves to determine in what direction their capabillities and opportunities are and where not. It's their business and I won't drive their car from the rearseat.

i voted i don't know because
A) i don't know if that is a smart move or shooting themselves in the foot hyperion would know that better than me.
B) i don't think hyperion can approach them anyways without ainc's blessing.
C) maybe they have other plans and don't need this
D) maybe they already have done this Last edited by jkirk on 27-Apr-2006 at 03:49 PM.

Oh, yes, I do like a pipedream every now and then. But what is the use of an Amiga with that much HorsePower that is in a Cell? Of course, I would like such a thing! Don't get me wrong. But would I buy one? Does there happen to be a viable market for such a contraption? In magnitudes of tens of thousands I mean? Pipedreams! Don't bother Hyperion with it (if they ever are bothered with it!).

Sure they can contact them about a sw development, and might have done so allready.
But who shall develop and produce the hardware?.

For that to happen I think you need to add a "Huh? What's the purpose of this poll? Hyperion's a software company, they won't be making any Cell BE hardware" option. :)_________________ Oh, bother. |

Do you know that they haven't already done this? As Hyperion doesn't post every single freakin thing they do with their business each day, we don't have any idea if they have or have not filled this out already or might have contacted IBM by other means.

IMHO this would finally give non Amiga enthusiasts a reason to use Amiga. AmigaOS would be a lightweight, efficient OS coupled with a huge amount of DSP processing power. That is something worth buying if you're doing work involving heavy processing. This is something that normal PC's/other OSes don't have (for now). Sure there's Linux for the Cell but Linux has quite a bit more overhead than AmigaOS does. Amiga Cell would mean that there is more to Amiga than just a standard motherboard with a PPC chip onboard.
However, there would be quite a bit of work involved to get this off the ground. And it would have to happen quickly (i.e. not take another 5 years) or the industry will move on, rendering everything done obsolete.
Still, one step at a time. I want OS4 final first.

Maybe you should change the poll to read 'Elbox' or 'AckControls' instead of Hyperion since they are in the hardware biz.

I voted "Don't Know" because I don't. But, I'm sure Hyperion so know & they'll let us know anything we need to know.

I vote "noway" because I don't want Hyperion to waste time/money doing that. It's not their job. Other companies should do it. _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

If you are that bothered why don't you contact IMB yourself and tell them about OS4? |
