hyperion PLZ just Port AmigaOS 4.0 to x86 then hardware problem will be sorted for good..
Then all we have to do is get a pc hardware run AOS 4.0 with unbeatable speed no need to wait for years & years years & years years & years..

Even mac seen the end of ppc chipset & made a movement to x86 hardware.

@serk118

To save you the trouble of searching here's a rundown of most of the reasons why this can not happen:

  • Endianness

  • OEM Licences paid to Microsoft for PC Hardware

  • too many different varieties of support chipsets to write a small OS to support them all

  • no interest on the part of hardware manufacturers

Sometimes I wonder whether whoever starts for the n-th time threads like this one, does it just so that he can read such funny comments.

In France, we hate people writing SMS in forums, is this not the case on the other side of the Channel?

To stay on the topic: YAWN...(too)

Hehe, exactly my thoughts... But I found the following even more funny:

Quote:
why this can not happen:
- OEM Licences paid to Microsoft for PC Hardware
- no interest on the part of hardware manufacturers

Not really that hard to replace... i´ve done it in lots of assembler programs that i´ve portet.

  • hu? you dont need to pay MS to use PC hardware... or am i missing the point?

    Quote:
  • too many different varieties of support chipsets to write a small OS to support them all

  • Then just write drivers for a specific PC hardware and sell them as AOS4 ready systems... thats the same thing as they are doing now... but with x86 and cheaper motherboards...

  • no interest on the part of hardware manufacturers

  • cant say that eyetech seems that intrested either... :/

    Imo they should have done a x86 version from the begining and specified what PC hardware to support... they dont need to support everything... ...

    @serk118

    This thread is boring (yawn, snore) because someone posts a topic like this every few weeks. There are heaps of very long threads discussing AmigaOS4 on x86 that go round and round in circles and often get quite heated. Bringing up the x86 thing is like beating a dead horse (where can I find that beating a dead horse "smiley" that they've been uing over on A.org?). We've heard all the arguements before.

    As it happens, a lot of people this side of the Channel don't like it either!

    Indeed. Same arguments pro, same arguments against which are then countered by the same counter arguments that are countered again by suprisingly the same arguments..

    Oh, did I mention that people use the same arguments ?

    Anyway... There's always Aros, if you want AOS on X86 support that. If you want OS4 then you wait for some OS4 PPC hardware if you don't have it allready. Hyperion aint pouring money into OS4 if they don't think it will get better someday.
