Walkero came across a possible cause to some of the problems a lot of people are having with Epistula. Here's his suggestion as to why Epistula might work for some, and not others:

Quote:
Maybe there is problem about the contact list that someone has. On my list there are some friends that use not ordinary characters. Could this make the Epistula list confused?

I think he has a very good point there, as Epistula is rock solid on my machine and quite a few others, and his suggestion could very well be the answer.

To check this I would need some help from these people to track down this possible bugs, so if you are having problems, could you please do the following steps for me (probably on a windows machine, or Pidgin, or whatever):

1. Create a new Hotmail account; maybe with your usual name plus Epistula, such as walkero_Epistula for example.

2. Add any contacts with the 'non-ordinary' characters in their names to your new account and get them to accept you.

3. Check that Epistula is still crashing with your new account and newly added contacts and if it is, email daniel@the-snakepit.co.uk with the login details of your NEW account that you've just created.

This would help a LOT in the debugging of Epistula! Come on, lets get this thing sorted for the rest of you!

UPDATE
I think I've squashed the offending bug, which was in the MSN plugin and not in Epistula. Pesky MEMF_PRIVATE instead of MEMF_SHARED. I think.

Anyway, thanks to Darren Eveland I've stopped the crashes with his account and possibly the problems with other's accounts too so please download version 52.17 and let me know in the news thread.

Thanks.

Is swedish ÅÄÖ characters non-ordinary characters?
I have never been able to use the msn plugin without getting a crash when i'm connected and i'm pretty sure some of my friends are using swedish characters in their names. can't test anything at the moment but i sure will when i can

Hi Slash, out of the box (OS4 Classic) Epistula was very unstable for me - in fact I've never got any iteration of the software to work reliably :(

I will try what you suggest....I did sign in and it loaded my contact list but then froze shortly after that. once when I resized the contact list window...

It looks like really great software ...so I am anxious to get it working :)

@Slash

I would like to help but whatever the problem is it's been more or less stable here but allways unstable. Right now it freezes the whole system whenever I doubleclick a contact in that list forcing me to do a hard reset. When you mention it it seems like it's allways done this whenever I doubleclick a contact to chat with them, with earlier versions I've at least been able to chat for a little while before this happend. I had it runing for hours at one point when I didn't chat and then I doubleclicked on a contact and.... well freeze.

I wish that I could help but I can't right now. I hope that this can be solved since I just love this program and wish for it to become stable.

@Slash

It seems that 52.17 is better than the previous version. Here works ok even if I have the same contacts on lists, with non-ordinary characters. These characters are shown as question marks. I'm not sure but I see in this version all the contacts in bold. Is it something that existed???

I'll use this new version this weekend and I'll come up with errors, if there are any...

Whatever you want to test, I'm here to help you. Keep up the good work.

@walkero

Excellent, some good news Fingers crossed.

Strange thing with the question marks. I'll investigate that further.

The bold contacts are caused by a small piece of code I implemented for testing, they'll be back to normal for the next release. It won't do any harm.

@Kicko

The smilies aren't working? I haven't disabled them intentionaly but that is the section that I'm working on at the minute, a proper smilie system, so maybe I've done something to upset that.

I'll check.

Hmmm. For one user the smiley didnt work. now i chat with another user and the smileys work ?!?
Both are swedish users. Both have the clock sign.. probably away. The user i didnt see smileys is on my custom list.
The other isnt yet. Dunno if its because of that but ill continue to test. Now its time for christmas presents buying :)

@Kicko

In your version smilies only appear when written a certain way, for exmaple, :) and : -) (the space shouldn't be there after the : as AW.net will translate it to a graphic) are different and only the first one will be translated to an image.

This will change very soon. In the meantime, the following are available (excuse the code snippet):

AddEmoticon("Happy", ":)", 0, FALSE, "emoticon_happy");
AddEmoticon("Sad", ":(", 1, FALSE, "emoticon_sad");
AddEmoticon("Surprise", ":O", 2, FALSE, "emoticon_surprise");
AddEmoticon("Wink", ";)", 3, FALSE, "emoticon_wink");
AddEmoticon("Big Smile", ":D", 4, FALSE, "emoticon_bigsmile");
AddEmoticon("Angry", "XO", 5, FALSE, "emoticon_angry");
AddEmoticon("Cool", "8)", 6, FALSE, "emoticon_cool");

Errr... Updated version still crashes (MSN). And TOC plugin fails to login (afair, previous version could, this one fails).
Also: install overwrites the account settings for MSN.

@Kicko

Tried your advice, managed to avoid the reaper, but exiting makes the window stuck.
Feeling like impotent: want but cant
But maybe it's for good, easier to cocentrate on urgent stuff...

Meanwhile will wait for related news.

@Slash

This weekend I used the latest epistula version with no big troubles, but with a lot chatting with friends.
One time crashed when I closed the window without disconnect first and two or three crashed the task of chatting with someone, but I killed it and epistula continued with no problems. I had also the issues that in one chat window the smilies were shown and on an other not.

I was wondering if you have a todo/wish list and if we can ask things for the next issue. I'd like to ask a two simple things, which are:
1. Show offline contacts (on/off) set by variable at the prefs or icon tooltype
2. Show empty groups (on/off) set by variable at the prefs or icon tooltype
3. The icon at the top left corner of a chat window should show if this user is still online, or if the status of a user would change a message in the already open window should occur, or beside the name of the user should be shown his status. I had a crash of Epistula because I tried to send a msg to someone who was offline. Maybe there was a problem with the alert window opening that appears in such situations.

I don't know if these are simple features, but I'd like to have them at the next version. If you need betatester, I'm here for you.

Hey, I don't have to do anything to please you lot you know! Yes, I did have the pages on, but I wasn't happy with them hence I took them down! They're mine, I can do what I like with them.

Be patient for Christ's sake!

lol, I cant help but laugh at some of the posts from you and Rogue lately. I laugh because I know how tough it can be being the author of popular software, with user expectations, demands, bugs that needed to be fixed yesterday, etc, etc. :)

Chin up, you're getting there. Just bear in mind your software is valuable and that people like it and want to use it.
