I just stumbled upon a great video produced entirely on Amiga computers:
YouTube - Space War - Tobias J. Richter (Amiga Animation)

The credits at the end says it was modelled / rendered with Reflections and VideoScape and presented in Scala.

AFAIK the video was released on VHS tape by 17 Bit Software.
Does anyone know if the Scala script and the animations still are available somewhere?

@Waran

This outstanding animation was made 15 years ago using "laughable" hardware, and it still puts modern animations to shame!

@Waran

If you ever saw it, you would love his work for the "Colony" album of Bjorn Lynne. The animation goes to the title track of the CD and is around 6 mins long and is truly brilliant. Sadly you cannot download it any longer from Bjorn Lynnes site, and it isn't listed on Tobias' site either.

I do have both the DivX and WMV versions somewhere (I can lay my hands on the DivX one easily - but it is a hefty 62MB so a little large to send/upload).

If I get a chance, I will see if it can be converted and uploaded to youtube, though you won't get to see it as nicely from there.

You can see more high quality work from Tobias and the other members of The Light Works by following the link.

Right! Pixar movies look crap compared to this...

Seriously: Didn't Tobias Richter also do the animations for a silly German parody of Star Trek? Don't know its name. It was broadcasted here on the TV station Sat1 IIRC. Would like to see it again...

Another thing I noticed: When I heard the music to this video, it reminded me of the wonderful Alien Breed 3D soundtrack (CD32 version). No wonder - it's made by the same person.

Alex.

@Waran

Thanks. I never saw this video but I remember I was astonished by "The Last Stand on Hoth" which, IIRC, is also done by Tobias Richter.
And also the small demo (don't remember the name) with pseudo-3D objects where you go under sea. Oh memories...

Toby has worked for Paramount in recent years, as well as on Lair (PS3) with Factor 5, and on X3 which looks like Project X in 3D to me... - you may wanna check out his more recent demo reels and work - the official website of The Light Works is at
http://www.thelightworks.com/index_e.htm.

I still have the VHS tape of this stored away somewhere, along with my Deathbed vigil and History of the Amiga tapes....

I never saw one of those big Tobias Richter productions before. I believe he called it 'Demo Reels' and usually presented and sold them on computer fairs in Europe.

The image quality and the sound is superb indeed, if you consider it was created on 16 and 50 MHz computers 15 years ago.

Unfortunately the YouTube video looks rather blurry and it's even hard to say if it was rendered in 256-color- or HAM-mode. I really would love to see the original ANIMs or a version with a better image quality.

@ elwood

The Last Stand on Hoth is one of my favorite animations. This masterpiece was created by Craig Collins, another very talented Amiga artist.

Tobias did an animation with a similar name, called The Battle of Hoth. It also features Snowspeeder Squadrons and ATAT walkers.

Enjoy!

Ok, I have uploaded the animation for Bjorn Lynnes Colony track called "Messages" to youtube.

You can find it here.

I will see if I can get the original unbutchered version up on something like rapidshare so it can be downloaded in its high resolution glory.

The "Messages" DivX file can be downloaded in its 640x480 glory from this link. It is a 62MB avi file.

Wow, what a fantastic video!

I just watched the clip on YouTube and grabbed the DivX file.
I am very impressed about the highly professional image work and the beautiful soundtrack. It looks like a trailer of an upcoming sci-fi movie picture with fabulous special effects.
... now I know why Paramount and the other companys hired him.

Thank you very much for uploading this!

BTW, you can check out Bjørn Lynne's album here

@Waran

Glad you enjoyed it. It used to be available from Bjorns site before he moved back to Norway. It is possible to find the page on the site that references the video, but the video page no longer exists.

I bought the album back when he launched it, and I really enjoyed it. The tune and animation work really well together. I had asked Bjorn if there was likely to be more animations to his work that could possibly be included on the album itself in a separate data track, but he said it was unlikely.

I have recently ordered his Undercover album which came out late last year. You can listen to the whole album online too (by following the link).

Uh, it's nice and everything but "puts modern animation to shame" is sorta kinda incorrect.

Rendering time - about 4 weeks. I love that!

To think only a few years later you'd be playing Rogue Squadron with better graphics in real-time. Amazing, really.

I really enjoyed watching that - thanks for sharing!

I spent quite some time exploring Bjørn's site and enjoyed the tracks from both albums.

While 'Colony' features melodic and easy-listening sci-fi tracks which let you dream of other galaxies, the 'Undercover' album is much darker and has a couple of pretty suspense-packed titles in the style of thrillers and espionage series. This will be the perfect soundtrack when I am going to finish Robert Ludlum's book 'The Bourne Identity'.

I also would recomend this site if you are looking for a great soundtrack for your animation or video project. The site offers a convenient and fast way to get licenses of Bjørn's music.
