@Fransexy

I tried it.

GUI needs replacing and there is no AHI support.

How difficult/feasible would be modernize it?

@Fransexy

Yes at last. I loved modules made with Symphonie (but for some, an 060 was really needed).

With these sources released, I now hope for this tracker to be ported to AmigaOS4 and overall I'd love a TuneNet plugin

OMG! How did I miss this? I'be getting this now! Thankyou! I searched for Patrick Meng for years and found nothing on internet.

One again you have proved yourself to be Fransexy.

@NutsAboutAmiga

The older Free version did actually work on OS4 and I managed to render some audio with it. So this gives me hope.

Symphonie Pro is excellent program. Yes, it's a bit complex, especially if you used ProTracker before. The GUI does NOT make it any simpler either. But you can make a miracle with the Symphonie sound engine once you get used to it. It's CPU hungry though. I remember 040/40 was enough to play max. 32channels. Otherwise the replaying simply stopped, especially if effects were used like echo or others.

@AmiKit

I also found Symphonie hard at first, made worse by the lack of English instructions for me. But I tried to learn and eventually worked it out. And started making some tracks with it. I was impressed the first time I saw it. Especially the "Endless Dream" mod which was the most beautiful and professional song I had heard of any tracker. Never heard the ProTracker original yet still. I only had an 030 @ 40MHz but that was just good enough to play it in real time. For my A1200 that program was impressive!

I thought there was also an AHI and Mac version planned but I never saw this happen. I would like to email Patrick and praise him for the wonderful job he did making Paula do such a fantastic job at playing 16-bit sounds with only 8-bit precision.

Symphonie: Another Amiga hallmark.

Did anyone notice that the sources are 100% Assembler?

That’s not a problem, 680x0 software does run underOS4 emulation, you only need to fix the audio, timing and GUI and it will work, you will need to understand the 680x0 assembler code to do it, I get the impression that there is not that many 680x0 hackers left.

I might be able to do it, but I have no interested or time to be doing it, 680x0 software is not fun to debug, this might also be the case for lots of developers that does know some thing about 680x0 assembler.

Bounties might motivate developers to fix and update old software.

Are there any deassemblers which can create C code from Assembly ? Or 68k -> PPC converters ?

@Tomppeli

Yes there exists tools for that, but this will not make the source-code more readable or less bug free.

And translated code is often not prefect; so it often added bugs and problems, you will need to sort out.

Perhaps, if there's an email address in the new package, you might forward on something like (or identical to) the above? That would certainly be nice for him to know someone really appreciated his program...

@Fransexy

As a "tracker" enthusiast it would be great to have this sort of power. I used to find it very difficult to make professional trance tracks with the confines of 4 channels, and always wished that, if a AAA Amiga were released, multiple 16bit audio channels would be available to compose professional sounding trance/techno music...

Maybe Symphonie can be picked up by the OS4 community and make it one of those must have composition tools that professionals would like to use; with MIDI support and the like.

Like a good graphics package, OS4 should have a professional studio quality tracking software package. Will keep an eye out on this one!

Q!

Right on the money there. I know as I have done this myself. I've converted Paula hardware and CIA dependant module playing code to use AHI. It is possible and IMHO this would be easier as it mixes it's own tracks and creates a sound stream. Even the code has switches for things like hardware or OS if I read it correctly.

Ahem, looks like I put my best foot forward here. (Done that before.)

How convenient that it's got sources to make those changes. Get to work! :) Assembler, eh, hopefully someone can convert it to C.
