I test the OWB 68k from Jörg Strohmayer

http://strohmayer.org/sfs/download.php/OWB_m68k.lha

after some tests i find out, that the OWB 68k port have massive problems with task scheduling.

Most time CPU load is near 0% and loading a page is very slow.when i change the task pri in OWB with scout to 9 then OWB run mich faster.

when i switch off the JIT of my winuae then speed is simular to a 040/25.

here when i click to map(on default google page), then the page is show in 47 sec.before take several minutes.

so i think a 060/50 take 20-25 sec to show the page.
maybe a 06 User can post time values with original taskpri and with high taskpri

my winuae system with jit show the page in below 7 sec, before take 30 sec.

normaly JIT in winuae is over 15* faster.
this values show too, that OWB on 68k can run much faster, when the task sheduling problem fixed in ixemul.

i see when taskpri is change to 9 OWB use permanently 95% cpu load.there is also a task running ixemul taskswitcher.

I like to search for the slowdown problem, i am sure if that is fix OWB 68k run much more faster.

But i dont like linux buildsystem and i avoid to do much on linux, my linux knowledge is not very good, maybe somebody is motivate now because he can see that OWB can run much faster.

I also read that Natami Team have source diff from Jörg get.

Maybe they can compile out of source new 68k version, and can send me that, i can search wy the slowdown of OWB happen on 68k.

but what i like is a ready to compile system, i only want type make and all run automatic and build me a 68k OWB

@bernd_afa

Hi, thanks for the tip.

But where can you download OWB 68K and what is the latest version?

Also, are you going to do further updates to AFA_OS? :) that would be nice :)

Thanks!

i forget to tell, owb need the bb2 rom update and on OS3.9 bb2 install use romupdate must choose, or come a error v45 exec is need.

when you use afa os and you have no exec V45 install then OWB crash and bring no error message.

@bernd_afa

OWB V1.2 was much faster than the last version of OWB V1.3 68k. I have seen that when testing OWB 68k V1.2 and OWB 68k V1.3 (On 060/50). The last features added on OWV 1.3 make owb 68k more slow.

I have just OWB V1.3 on my amiga and will test your explanation about speed increased for OWB 68k soon.

- I think Jorg will share the OWB source if someone is interested for a 68k port.
- He also allright to share the last ixemul.library AOS4 for porting to AOS3.x if someone want to do that.
- 68K users will also need an updated port for SDL (from AOS4 or morphos sources), IMHO.

funny enough on my 060/50 owb 1.3 is loading generic googlemap page in nearly 1,5 minute in 800x600 window set regardless of priority or even faster on null. dunno what that means-

strange, that it not speedup your system
oh thats very slow, do you use 56k modem ?
I use DSL2000 without fastpath.

please other users post time info too.

for use of OWB 68k you need not install Geek Gadgets as stand in OWB readme
only what you need is OS3.9 with BB2

and download ixemul

http://aminet.net/package/util/libs/ixemul-48.0

and install

also i test that ixemul 49.x dows not work. only ixemul 48.0 work

@bernd_afa

yes, 49.x not work. have sending a mail to 49.x author and he answer me that not work. No amiga to fix the problem. joerg have the last ixemul.library AOS4 sources available in case someone want to update ixemul.library for 68k.

MAYBE with updated SDL and ixemul.library for 68k (at least), OWB will be much faster also.

EDIT:

OWB V1.2

yes and that seem the problem, time it need differ much.on firefox, a reload(no chache) need only 2-3 sec.a read from browser cache display this page in ca. 0,2 sec.

so you see, a browser is much faster than need, and wait for internet.but internet need only 2-3 sec.so time need should only differ 2-3 sec.

but on 68k only the time differ very much, so there seem another problem and not 68k CPU is too slow.maybe OWB send on 68k only 1 request and wait until finished, and not do that so it send 5 or more requests, to reduce internet wait time

I get now the source from Jörg, and look if i can compile.

this map site is good for test, it have less scriptung and browser action but large image data.so all that do is load some images.

so in theory wy it is so much slower than ibrowse or aweb.
the graphic refresh is always fast.

when i try out the youttubepage, (this page is load very fast and large, but need not much data from internet.

what time you get here (when the window is fill complete. ?

you can reach that page, when you click in google page on more and choose youtube

Hello, don't know what is the final goal for you, bernd (owb updated for 68k or just for some experiment,...) but IMHO Netsurf for 68k will be more easy to improve because much more smallest source code.

BTW, I have made some tests here: With priority=0

OWB 1.2 68K (800X600X32 screenode):
www.google.fr: 10 seconds.
Maps button: 20 seconds.

OWB 1.3 68K (800X600X32 screenmode):
www.google.fr 1 minut and 02 seconds.
Maps button: 45 seconds.

OWB 68k V1.3 give slow pointer when quit. IMHO, hits when quiting OWB 1.3 68K.

Of course, OWB 1.3 give better result than OWB 1.2 but OWB 1.3 take much time because fonts features and other improvements (see the readme for V1.3).

Don't know how changing priority. changing priority to 9 with scout and after clicking of maps on google page and no reactions ???

ah good, your values look as i expect.

i think load time differ very much too on 68k.but it seem the increase taskpri dont help on 060.thanks to your help, i hope i or with help of others can find the problem,wy owb run so extrem slow.

>but IMHO Netsurf for 68k will be more easy to improve because much more >smallest source code.

yes but netsurf have no java.

owb use the Apple render engine webkit, which apple use in their safari browser and KDE team sonn in konquer complete

so it is sure, that it is increase without many work and html designer support it,by check if their code work on this browser.

I really cant believe, that a modern browser can be more than 2* slower than a amiga browser showing same page

maybe i can do the trick of using hashtables for instruction decoding, which i do in amiblitz, so that it compile on large files more than 10* faster.

this depend only from that, that the search of the correct instruction is speedup.

best idea to get a good amiga browser with less work, is get the voyager sourcecode, because its MUI.

aweb source is here, but problem is, it cant run on AROS and MOS only with help of 3.9 files.

the old html render engine is then replace with new and only the bookmark toolbar etc and prefs can use from old and need notreweritten fromscratch.

Even if no javascript (untill now) Netsurf source is much more smallest, well structured and could be used on cubicIDE easily (as chris_y said to me). Javasript will arrive in a near futur ans just need to wait. Netsurf no need about lots of special 68k version of libraries, sdl and ixemul,...... like OWB.

IMHO OWB is slow on 68k because simply just to few 68k release was made and lots of work much be done on owb 68k to have owb 68k running at a decent speed.

Netsurf 2.0 devel. sources are available on aminet. http://aminet.net/search?query=netsurf

@Bernd

Just would like to add some points:

Megacz has made an ixemul.library 48.3 for amiga 68k.

http://megacz.back2roots.org/ports/ixemul-48.3-bin-m68k.lha

this ixemul.library work with OWB 1.2 and 1.3 68k.

see all the megacz here: http://megacz.back2roots.org/portsbttr.html

With OWB 1.2 68k I could see after just some seconds delay google page, make a search and see my favourite amiga site. Take much longer time with OWB 1.3 68k because fonts supports.

Bernd, have you make something with OWB recently ????

@all

Maybe the ixemul.library port 48.3 from megacz (or others ported amiga program) with help for running better some applications.......

@megacz

AOS4 ixemul.library port is available on request (I think allways) from OWB author, for informations.

OWB is under BSD licence, WebCore/JSCore (APSL, LGPL and BSD).

Never look a gift horse in the mouth... but where is the source ? sand-labs CVS ?
