Jacek Piszczek from MorphOS Team made some memetest on Mac Mini 1.5GHz, Mac Mini 1.42GHz and Pegasos2

@Drako

Impressive numbers from the minis. Seems the 50% higher cpu clock and the 25% higher memory clock actually multiply (or sum) to nearly 100% higher memory bandwidth.

One would at first glance actually expect the difference to be smaller, since the 25% higher memory clock should be MORE of a bottle neck for the 50% faster CPU.

Impressive indeed.

So. My 221¤ for MacMini 1.42 might not have been that bad investment after all. (main difference is that 1.5Ghz version has bigger GFX mem, IIRC. I have to use compositing only on SAM then.)

Now... Which comes first. My SAM & AOS4.1 or MOS for my MacMini?

Anyone got some source for that test? I'd like to try something...

That's an easy question to answer.

SAM440ep w/AOS4.1 is here and available NOW. It may be many, many months before MorphOS2.x (or 3.0) is available for the MacMini. So if you want to have a new "Next Gen" Amiga-Like computing experience now or in the near future, get the SAM440ep w/AOS4.1, or an EFIKA w/MOS2.1.

I have an EFIKA and really like it and MOS2.1, considering the low cost to get it, with a custom case, pico PSU and Radeon 9250 graphics card. The registration is a bit high, but I think it is worth it.

A very good friend just got the SAM440ep and is going to bring it up the next time he visits so we can get a good side by side comparison of the two, but from what I have seen and read, they are very similar in performance. The SAM440ep has the advantage of adding more RAM, a SATA controller, USB 2.0 (in hardware, but I think work is needed in AOS4.1 to take full advantage of the higher USB speeds), and more expansion capabilities, so the extra cost is justified in many users minds.

I think it is great to have two new choices, plus the MiniMig and all it's variants, including an add-on board for the C-One which will run the MiniMig core, with more improved cores on the way all the time. Amiga emulation has never been better with AmigaForever 2008, AmiKit and AmigaSYS providing the most amazing AmigaOS3.x experiences ever.

Hopefully the Natami is still in the works and will reach it's ambitious goals and become a real product and not just a hopeful dream that is not fulfilled. The Amiga way of computing is continuing to survive, and after a low period of activity, it looks like we are living in the beginning stages of what might be some kind of revival and increased interest and growth.

That is my hope anyway. I myself will be spending more of my time writing code for Amiga 68k and MorphOS using CubicIDE, which hopefully will also allow me to compile what ever I write into an AmigaOS4.x executable too, without too much extra effort.

There may come a day in the far future when AmigaOS, AROS and MorphOS will be ported to the same hardware and all Amiga users can buy and support one hardware manufacturer to lower the cost due to increased minimum parts purchases (which hopefully will also reduce the price of our Next Gen Amigas, ha ha ha). That way we will all have the same "Amiga" hardware, but we will be able to run what ever "Amiga-Like" operating system we like the most, and hopefully also be able to dual, triple, or multiple boot into what ever other OS we are also interested in, when we want a different flavor.

It wasn't really a question. KimmoK has ordered a SAM and is currently eagerly awaiting delivery. To him it must feel like aeons pass by in what we think of as "mere days". Hence the laughing smiley

He knows SAM/OS4 exists, but that doesn't help when you're waiting for the delivey

@olegil

You got it right.

@amigadave

I bought MacMini because it cost me less than what Efika+peripherals would have cost. (at the same time it gave me a good chance to get disappointed with OSX (done), and the HW could also function as a living room media center (with whatever OS))

Just now I do not have enough time for Amiga stuff. But I'm working hard to make some time to get my old-great-hobby going on again!!!!

If I had more time, I would already be trying to code with my 68k Amigas and harassing Piru about sending me a betaversion of MOS for MacMini. Also I surely would have tried MOANA & AOS4 on the MacMini, I have the BitTorrent waiting... (do not worry, I will not use pirated SW, when the SW is any good, if AOS4 is released for MacMini I buy a few copies immediately, if it is not released but runs anyway on MacMini via some stable PPCAmiga-emulationlayer I would buy "some" version of AOS4.1 to support Hyperion.)

@Drako

So, graphics is slower on the mini macs? that sucks.
