Thanks, not sure I'm going to install Amicygnix, but I might, just to check out the spread sheet.

@sundown

Worked for me...

although loading one of the sample files look for some volume I don't have.
After I pressed cancel, the spreadsheet with plotted graphics appeared fine.

This is quite fast this whole thing, but I'm sure over time, with further optimization the unix system will feel faster also.

@meet.mrnrg

I think like you. But in comparaison with the previous version, it is already faster.

But the best think for us is that gnumeric and abiword would be ported for AOS4

I've read that there is an enhancement regarding the speed versus the older release of Gnumeric and Amicygnix.
Due to lack of time, I left the old release installed on my HD, working great, and a couple of weeks ago I tried to install all the new packages: no application runs now (gnumeric, gimp etc.) because they run out of memory (I have a CSPPC running 4.0).
Maybe I should have left the old ones, which worked great, or hopping for a new release with a better memory handling/allocation...

It's best described as a interface.

Amicygnix is X11 (X-Windows) for AmigaOS,
but there is lots more in the Amicygnix package.

No, there are things AmigaOS does not support that Linux does, but I think the majority of Linux code can be converted to run on AmigaOS4.0 whit or whit out Amicygnix, it all depends on amount of work that needs to be don to get that program working.

@Mrodfr

what is amigygnix:
Umm, it's spelled AmiCygnix.( cygnet > with a 'unix' twist via X11> cygnix.

- lunix for AOS4 or an interface to run linux program easily ???
X11 systems or Xwindows have nothing to do with linux. They share a common OS.

Having a capable spreadsheet is so much of a +, that I undertook to install AmiCygnix. I do unix (Solaris) all day, every day at work so I am not thrilled to have it invade my Amiga experience. Installation was (almost) flawless.

I stuck in America/Chicago but the hour shows one hour too early.

I could not find any prefs to make it right. AmigaGuide has no search function (that I can tell), so I put it in an editor and search. It said it was the environment variable TZ (it is unix, you know) and I should look at Cygnix:/s/Cygnix-Startup. However there is no mention of TZ or time in there.
I hunted all over the AmiCygnix directory tree after my unix knowledge led to a dead end. So I went to the Amiga side.

Here is OS4.1:prefs/Env-Archive/TZ. I shutdown AmiCygnix, and changed it to CST6CDT, and rebooted. The time was no better; still 1 hour too early.

Hmmm. Maybe this version of unix cannot be made to understand the changes in when the change from Standard to Daylight is?

Would it not be better to have AmiCygnix create TZ anew each startup from the OS4.1 official time preferences? I hate having to maintain two side-by-side time systems.

The Gnumeric works pretty well. I suppose I made a wrong (50-50) choice which stops me from doing keystroke COPY | CUT | PASTE.

I was also used to being able to select which direction the next cell would be (down, right, or none) when I press [Return].

The missing online docs does complicate learning about how to activiate (if possible at all) features of the spreadsheet. Has anyone a fairly good way of making the task of reading docs while using the spreadsheet? For me it seems I must use [L-Amiga]+m, wait a long time (it seems) to see them on another screen.

With the new Compositing feature of OS4.1 can we arrange to have the AmiCygnix X-server run in a window on the workbench?

I gave some money to StarAm-plan when I tried to make *it* my spreadsheet. Before that I used TurboCalc until it gave an erroneous result and others convinced by that it was an assembler code program with no hope of being updated for native OS4.1, so I am giving Gnumeric a try. Is $30 USD a helpful amount of money? I am using Gnumeric to do income taxes, since I refuse to use TurboTax AND my finances are not particularly complicated. So I guessed I should pay something like what a TurboTax upgrade would be. However, *IT* would surely do the finished task, and I won't know about Gnumeric for 1 more month. Success or Fail I will give $. Is $30 USD an insult, or better than nothing, or OK?

Yes. Start X11Setup tool and select "picasso96pip" as videodriver. That mode will open AmiCygnix in a window on Workbench.

@Tomppeli

That did not work. The screen 1st comes up with a something that looks like a window screen, then it makes a full screen as usual.... not resizeable.

Everytime I start the myX11Setup, there is a complaint:
Variable 'CYGNIX_DISPLAYID' has invalid entry and will be ignored!

I click OK, get the Configuration enviroment for AmigCygnix, but none of the 13 possible entries say anything about the above. I feel powerless to make that complaint go away.

@ggw

Please delete the files "ENVARC:Cygnix/CYGNIX_DISPLAYID" and probably "ENV:Cygnix/CYGNIX_DISPLAYID". Then launch myX11Setup again.

If this does not work, you can reset all important variables with the script

Cygnix:s/Utilities/Reset-Environment.bat

Launch myX11Setup afterwards. It should not complain about errors and you should be able to select the picasso96pip driver.

@CygnusEd

The use of Gnumeric successfully completed doing my income taxes this year.

The editing is alien to me, but I got over it.

I printed and used the option to generate a pdf, which was readable with AmiPDF, but NOT on our Mac iBook. Every last character appears as an outlined rectangle. Any easy solution for that?

You never commented on my suggested contribution. Will you comment?

I am happy o hear that because spreadsheet apps are those that really turn me on.

Beside word processors (or rich text editors to call them in short) spreadsheets are the second stage, not to say as equal, that make every OS a Desktop-ready environment. I mean for daily productivity routines but not only.

Just to say a few words here, I myself will try to produce a native OS4 spreadsheet app. Until then, I am happy to hear there exists Gnumeric though it's not a native app. I hope my app would compete seriously with Gnumeric

Great that Gnumeric was useful for you

To your PDF problem: I guess the problem is the linefeed (LF) at the end of the line. You could use a tool like this to remove it:

@DiskDoctor

My needs are few. Most of the GNUmeric stuff is wasted on me.

What I found difficult was being able to copy to formulas to a cell off to the right so when I printed the spreadsheet for my records I could see where the number came from.

GNUmeric treated my "attempts to copy the contents" just about every way EXCEPT a straight text copy. I also never figured out how to get it to move to the right instead of down when I hit [Return]

I also missed how to get a column on the left that would print what its row number was, i.e. a line #. That was for the same reason as above so I could quickly find which row # a formula referred to on my print out.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Like most people I don't notice the things that worked great (that were very hard to do), I only noticed the impediments. Inspite of the above troubles I would willingly use GNUmeric again for my next spreadsheet job (probably next near around April 15!!) and I will donate again.
