| Since the native version seems dormant/dead, has anyone managed to get it going on OS4.1? Here on 4.0 it's been proven to be impossible, but I had a faint hope it fared better on 4.1...
Any tech wiz working on a workaround? I still miss this app too much, especially for cleaning up tasks. Real shame it doesn't work... |

I didn't try DOpus Magellan on AmigaOS 4.1, but on MorphOS 2.1 is working great. I hope that the same must be for AmigaOS 4.1 too. _________________ AMIGA FUTURE A MAGAZINE WITH FUTURE ATTITUDE

MorphOS doesn't protect the zero page and the custom chip address range I believe, and Magellan does some hardware banging addressing registers in this range. OS4 doesn't approve of hardware banging apps and effectively crash any program that tried to do so.
MOS is aimed to be more OS3 compliant and lets programs access custom chips that aren't there without crashing the app which is why Magellan works on MOS.
This is my understanding from what I've heard anyway.
I don't get why they couldn't just get rid of that hardware banging stuff and compiled an OS4 version of the latest OS3 version first instead of trying to improve it, implementing all features just to end up where we are now.
I'm so tired of DOpus4 and the filemanagers like it. I want Magellan for OS4 too. It's just so far ahead of everything else even without its bells and whistle such as built-in pricture viewer, player, FTP client, etc. _________________ >Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. >A1-XE/G4, Radeon9250, Sweex 5.1, SII680 -Don't hesitate to contact me about my programs, but please use e-mail instead of PM. Re-compiling without the offending issue (if indeed there's only one thing preventing it from working) should be possible, especially since the source code is accessible.
Indeed, DOpus Magellan is one-of-a-kind, a masterpiece. It's difficult to live without. |

I believe the core was coded in ASM. |

It does if you want it, but even with protected first page magellan doesn't do nasty things there. |

| Andreas Loong (GuruMeditation), September 2006:
"The Magellan project is more or less a straight port. Not many new features, apart from the needed ones, such as PNG support and such things.
The first part of the project was to convert the SAS/C code to standard ANSI C code. In this process, all of the 68k asm part was moved out of Magellan into a "take care of this later" pile. Unfortunately, many of the core parts of Magellan was asm, which has been a problem. Just this august, the last remaining asm parts have now been converted to C, and we're currently working on integrating these bits into the core again.
We hope to have some news regarding Magellan in the near future."
Andreas Loong (GuruMeditation), February 2007:
If you say something without substance.. atleast if you are in a position to say something with substance.. there is often a backlash involved. Some will strike back, demand or suggest staying quiet, unless there is substance. However, if you adhere to that policy to not saying anything until there is substance to what you say, you will hear demands or requests for news, updates, anything.
It strikes me, with this in mind, that it is very hard to adhere to a strict policy regarding information. Well then, over to the small bits of information that I do currently have. Due to circumstances beyond my control, development has been very slow. Too slow for my taste, and that is why we're in the process of moving the work away from the previous developer to a new one. This because free time is no longer what it once was, and a new developer will increase the amount of time that we're able to spend on this, helping us finish the last bits of this project. This in turn will add some delays - one has to familiarize oneself with the code and how it works, before any real progress can be made.
That is where we currently stand, and that is also why there has been no significant news on the matter.
To answer some of the questions I read earlier in the thread : I'm afraid there is nothing you can do to help. No pre-orders, pre-payment, donations or anything else will speed this up. It will have to take the time it takes.
I'm confident that we are in a position to make good progress. _________________ AmiKit - Your high-end Amiga! |

| This report is really a joke... Almost three years! :) It could have been developped from scratch..
I understand people may not have the time and/or skill to do the work. But then why buying sources, and announcing such ports ? _________________ http://www.warpdesign.fr/ http://www.warpdesign.fr/blog |

DOpus Magellan on OS4.1?
Sure, why not:
 1024x768 (200KB)
I just grabbed the version from AmiKit and launched it as-is.
Well, a lot of stuff doesn't work but at least it plays the anim in the About window
[edit] It might take a lot of magic to make it work properly, it's definitely doing something nasty. Maybe I'll mess with it a bit while we wait for the OS4 port. [/edit] Last edited by AlexC on 11-Jan-2009 at 06:56 AM.

There are people way more skilled and experienced than I am (not talking about free time).. At least I hope so.
But if I wanted to buy some sources I'd make sure I had the necessary skilled people... and that the project had any use. I'm not sure buying 6 (or so) years old code full of ASM has any use. And if it wasn't the case, I'd defintely spend my money elsewhere... Because there is no magic, even in the Amiga world..._________________ http://www.warpdesign.fr/ http://www.warpdesign.fr/blog |

I believe such a conditions were secured but like Andreas mentioned there was or still is something beyond his control... So your advices here are useless and off-topic. Last edited by AmiKit on 11-Jan-2009 at 10:10 AM.

IIRC, I managed to get it working, at least the listers appearing, but it was next to useless: freezes and crashes were the rule. It's a real shame, especially if there's something relatively minor bringing down the whole program...
Hope we will someday get this tool working again. |

Quite happy with Filer here, seems to do most things Opus Magellan did, well certainly all I used it for back in the OS3.9 old days _________________ SAM 460 with 2GB or RAM, 1000GB HD, 4 port SATA, DVDRW drive and Radeon HD 4650 GFX card. |
