@all

Interesting creative use of the phrase " was responsible for creating the Amiga PC" by this fellow.

Oh well...another rewrite of history on an executive's resume. No surprise.

You know how it is; when it works, the executives "did it," when it doesn't work, the engineers "did it."

I'm sure that Adam Chowaniec was involved in turning the Amiga design into a manufacturable product, but the title "developer/creator of the Amiga" does not belong to him.

Shame really. Computerworld used to check their facts back in the heyday.
It's really best to not believe anything you hear or anything you read.

Oh...this fellow was in the news again a few days ago. "Amiga2 Corporation".
I never heard that one. You?

He's not really the father of the Amiga as we imagine it!

Almost crossing paths again..
"Chowaniec is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tundra Semiconductor Corporation"

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/12/12/commodore_64_anniversary/ - he "oversaw development". Last two paragraphs are quite interesting!

Quote:
he explained that at one point, Commodore had an outside programmer developing the Amiga's operating system. "I went to see the person writing this operating system," he remembered. "We flew out to his home, where he was writing this software on a bunch of early Sun workstations. He had about four or five Suns and a big cage with a rabbit in it. And he spent a lot of time talking to the rabbit."

So I guess the question to find out now is what Hyperion keep in their cage?!

Don't think we can really give one person the title "Father of the Amiga."

If possible, Jay Miner would have to be a strong contender.

The only authentic source 'bout who was involved with A1000 who deserves to be mentioned is the A1000 inner cover with the famous signatures.

Adam Chowaniec is not listed there. (Edit: However, there are a few unknown ones, according to the above link.) Hence, if he claims himself to be a father of Amiga, he's an idiot. If he doesn't claim that, ComputerWorld's journalist, who wrote the article about him is an idiot. Period. End of the story.

Yes we can, and history records Jay Miner as the Father. End of story

All good points, but there is one aspect not yet considered:

Everyone here is assuming that he meant that he meant the father
of the "Classic" Amiga. We all agree that is unlikely.

But the people who own the Amiga name have been assigning it
to other technologies that have little to do with what WE call "Amiga".

Maybe this guy invented the cell phone, or maybe he created the
API for the applications that are now being called "Amiga". Maybe
the next channel for the name "Amiga" will be card games you can
buy at the grocery store. Maybe they'll use the name "Amiga" for a
new line of condoms. If nothing else, that name IS associated with
getting screwed.

There is a wide separation between the name "Amiga" and the
Operating System/Computer that made the name famous.

Or maybe I'm just full of it.

LyleHaze

[edit] OK, OK, I read the article.
His claim is definitely the classic Amiga we all know and love.
Still, I think my condom comment had some merit.

@all

Actually, the one part of the many articles about this fellow in the last few days that caught my attention was the statement that "Amiga2 Corporation" had been an entity since 2002.

Now...in the past when we've had threads about other non-computer related products using the name "Amiga", we've seen varying reactions from those who think they own the name, right?

What is interesting to me in this case is that there is NO doubt that this fellow is naming "Amiga2 Corporation" after the orginal Amiga that the articles claim he was responsbile for. Ergo...I'm just curious if any correspondence ever went out to Mr. Chowaniec from any legal channels about using the name for his own endeavors.
If not...then perhaps anyone can use the name, no? :D

Seems this fellow was connected to the movers and shakers.
Check out the names.

Is he not mentioned in the Commodore books?

Well, that explains his presence at this event, he's chairman of the board of the company that sponsored the event. It also says that he was VP of Technology at Commodore.

I managed to find a few mentions of him in "On the Edge: The Spectacular Rise and Fall of Commodore," by Brian Bagnall. No-where does it say that he was in charge of the Amiga.

@All

this man should have spent too much time with Irving Gould and Medhi Ali as he seems compromised in some dirty scandals about public money abuse in Ottawa, see here and search for 'Amiga' in the page...

Indeed, a dog could possibly do a better job that Amiga Inc. just now.
