I, for one, am glad that Hyperion is taking all the time that is needed to make a good quality release of the OS4 beta firstly and the final version then...

The biggest thanks from me to all these great guys that are taking AmigaOS to the next step of its hystory with all the troubles that we all know...

Ok guys, calm down a bit. I've seen what is going on in the background, there is a he!! of a lot of work going on, it's going to take a little bit of time to remove some of the 'undocumented features' before the CD can be released to the earlybirders (nothing serious btw, just minor niggles, but that's what betatesters are for, afterall).

I'm sure that unless it's almost perfect certain people (with a blueish tint) will blow any glitches up out of all proportion and spread them faster than a virus in windows...

So, relax, think happy thoughts and wait just a bit longer, is getting closer...

ps. I hope I don't get into too much trouble for this...

Well i´m not in to Linux, but when the beta was announced early 2004, I couldn´t wait any longer.

The ugly hole in my 19" rack, won´t be there so much longer.

Neither was I, but I've learned on the way

Don't be afraid to ask, just don't do it on the regular linux forums, such as linux.se,
they just tell you to search on Google or .
Use Amigarulez, A1-norden or why not here at AW instead, we're much friendlier

It is not difficult to set up a working Debian, so that you can use it for surfing the net listening to mp3:s.
and if AOS4 gets delayed a month or two, you got to use your A1 for something, IMHO.

And Linux is the only choise before OS4 comes.

The only thing that helps is getting it out. "When it's done" is the only thing you will hear from me.

I don't know why people complain about a lack of news - I'm always here for answering questions.

ok - here are some questions with (hopefully) interesting answery from your side:

  1. comparing the upcoming prerelease and the final release later this year: what will be missing in the prerelease?
  2. comparing the just released beta version of os4 and the prerelease: what is still an open issue to be solved for the prerelease? or is it just bug fixing?
  3. what is missing in the cyberstorm version of os4 to be released?
  4. what is ben hermans doing these days?

thanks in advance for your answers.

byebye...

A lot. The prerelease will be more or less bare, only include the system itself and SDK. No contribs or anything. It will also only feature Radeon and Voodoo support (no SNAP), and will probably still include the 68k Picasso96.

Yes. Even a small number of bug reports/issues with the CD and system will be multiplied by the number of Earlybird systems out there. We need to take that into account. Even if these problems do pop up, it's always better to know an answer.

A few drivers need to be finalized, and Picasso96 converted. The latter is underway, but doe to the myriads of other things that always pop up going was slower than expected.

Working as usual. You got to ask him personally if you want details, though

Any chance of a screenshot or two? (perhaps of the system booting if it displays data?)

We appreciate the work!

....And what is your most used tool or application on OS4? (I suspect gcc??)

We have only heard about the amigaone version in the last few months, what about the csppc version? Is it more advanced and closer to the release than the Aone version? Or will both versions be released at the same time now as the Aone version seems to have a higher priority now?

I'll see what I can do. I can't usually just put things out without clearance.

Yes, gcc is high up, as well as IBrowse and (cough) Quake/Quake II.

I didn't say they don't do it. It's a project where more than two people participate.

We certainly spend more time on the AmigaOne version specifically, but any change in the system will benefit the classic version as well. The classic version is practically on the same level as the AmigaOne version. The major part being worked on (Picasso96) is for both. On the AmigaOne side there is more gaps to be filled (drivers mostly), so you mostly hear things about the AmigaOne version currently.

However, most of the OS is system-independend. We had, for example, a new release of Workbench yesterday with improvements like life select (icons go to "active" state while you drag-select) and customizable screen title bar (put things like Version strings, memory displays like public/fast/graphics, CPU display etc in the title bar) and a myriad of other little fixes. Of course this applies to all thee versions of OS 4 (AmigaOne, CSPPC and Blizzard).

Most certainly the release dates of the CSPPC/Blizzard version and the AmigaOne version have moved closer together due to this (with the classic version being pushed back). It doesn't mean, though, that the classic version is standing still or anything. The idea is still to have the classic version released first.
