| India Comes Up With $35 Laptop
If We (Amiga companies) could design a Powerpc based one even if it cost $100 to build and is sold at $250 it could be a best seller they have proved that can be done Last edited by Fransexy on 31-Jul-2010 at 11:18 AM.

$35? Way over-priced and low spec.

Is it April 1st?
It's not possible. $35 is the price of the CPU alone. _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci AmigaOS 4 betatester Jay Miner Society member Amiga Translator Org |

| Out of intrest, what is the smallest, cheapest PIC that has enough pins for a 64 colour VGA display, stereo sound, PS2 keyboard and Mouse, SPI for SD mass storage. and fake or 1.0 USB Bluetooth wireless. Drop the PS2 if your using Bluetooth mouse and keyboard?
I wouldve said add ethernet but thats $15 just for teh chip, and high speed USB is another $12?
All the code has to fit on the PIC flash, ram etc. Consider the 8 bit machines for resources, but notice PICs can easily be 20 TIMES more powerful. _________________ The older and more respected a scientist is, the longer it takes to prove him wrong. |

| Ever since call centre jobs were exported to India I decided to boycott anything produced there. Last edited by djrikki on 31-Jul-2010 at 04:10 PM.

| The Times of India isn't impressed:
"You don't launch products until you have a product to launch. Else it's vapourware."
"You don't show prototypes unless they are working ones with running apps, backed by a clear game plan to build up a vendor and apps network, and a clear design and specifications - and, preferably, a bill of materials."
"It isn't about the hardware -- it's about the application and the applications (apps) ecosystem. What will it be used for? Who will make those apps? Where's the developer community? Where is the road map for hundreds of applications?"
Sound advice! |

| If the device is real ... someone should demo AROS to them. If they see how Amigalike OS make the system fly, they might get interested in investing a few hundred thousand man hours for AROS SW development. _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // "priest" is just the RED goaul in me // The multicolor AmigaFUTURE IS NOW !! |

Quadruple the cost for the retail price;everyone in business must make a profit ,or close.
But if India wants to subsidize a basic laptop for its citizens surely that is better than other countries who keep citizens in dark ages while spending billions on acquiring nuclear weapons.
Netbooks are already very cheap in the West ($150 refurbished Gateway/Acer);why not sell/distribute the less expensive models in India. |

"everyone in business must make a profit"
I've seen how that is not always true in Asia .... one of the core reasons why I will be looking for new job without the "China" phenomenom. _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // "priest" is just the RED goaul in me // The multicolor AmigaFUTURE IS NOW !! |

| I've read about that machine somewhere else. Technically it is a kind of SuperNES with a rubber-keyboard and a simple LCD-monitor. Like a V-Tech learning computer (which is not worth 35 $), but for grown-ups. Technically it would have been no problem to put for example the C64 DTV with a simple keyboard and a primitive 5" PAL (or NTSC) -TFT into a plastic box. That would give a much more usable 35 $ Laptop. For geeks at least...

Hmm... SuperNES with a touch screen and running Linux.
"Dubbed, the 'Sakshat' laptop, it is aimed at students and Sibal expects it to be their hands from 2011. Despite the price, users will get a touch-screen, a PDF reader and a webcam for video conferencing. There has been no confirmation of its specifications but reports suggest 2GB of memory, Wi-Fi and Ethernet and power consumption at just 2W. Naturally, the device will run Linux. There was no talk how it performed running Crysis – not even at low settings. " _________________

| I don't believe you will see it for that price. It will cost more than that. Compare that to other microcontroller project boards and projects. It is wishful thinking and underpriced.
