I don't know what they're intending, but the Amiga Fantasy is only going to appeal to hobbyists and retro fans...

By their own admission, they'd be doing other models too.
And even so, newcomer retro fans and hobbyists would still like to have a useable, stable and modern OS.

In all fairness, it will probably mean breaking compatibility with older versions and other amiga-oid OS, but it has to be done.

Paolo be serious please, if we want an Amiga like OS on x86 we can use AROS already, AROS is availible on x86 machines since 1995 or so, CommodoreUSA or not ...

They only try to hijack the Amiga name attaching the brand into a simple PC, this is a know story that's it.

Community are sick not by legal actions, community are sick by trolls and speculators ...

You can't use the Amiga name to sell PCs with Windows or AROS, legal action or not is a logical manner ...

Than give us a viable alternative to a x86 Amiga. One that doesn't cost 2000 euros for a hobby.

This one I don't get. Why all this talk about retro and hobby crap.

AROS can be soooo much more than that. It already is.

Good luck with that. That was the main purpose for AROS64 and that didn't get too far from the other AROS Devs moaned about breaking 3.1 API.

It needs to be done because if not, AROS will be stuck in the same infinite loop of death in which Amiga PPC is today. That means goodbye new Commodore amiga and means goodbye to AROS as an (semi)commercial OS. It will be stuck in hobby OS waters forever and probably die as such.

Well, if Commodore USA is serious in its plans, this might be the chance to port the OS to the x86 platform, being it thanks to a contract with Commodore USA, or just starting from your initiative.

I really wonder how you can see something serious in a thing like this...

Your preaching to the choir, that was my main reason for financing AROS64's development.

Can everyone who is getting worked up by this chill out a bit please.

If Commodore USA start supporting AROS financially (i.e. pay money to have work done on it), then the Amiga community wins. If they don't, nothing of value was lost, things will carry on as they were before.

It doesn't really harm AmigaOS either. If it did it would have to be in the form of lost sales, but in reality how many people are going to stop saving for an X1000 or Sam now that these branded PCs have been announced? I'd imagine the number of people likely to change their mind is quite small, wouldn't you agree?

This is funny.

I've never understood why some people wanted so badly to see the name Commodore placed back in front of Amiga, considering how detrimental Commodore as been for the Amiga. It's almost as bad as saying "Microsoft Amiga"

In any case, calling an x86 PC an Amiga would be an insult to everything the Amiga stands for so I'm hoping they'll use the name for something more noble than some rebadged PCs.

/me rushes to e-trade to invests all his savings on pop-corn stocks

The Amiga computer use to stand for cutting edge technology at affordable prices.

Depends largely on CommodoreUSA's actions. If they do it right, they could win the majority of the market. But like I already said, they biggest concern and goal would be getting in new users, not "stealing" old ones.

PPC Amiga obviously, by the reactions on this forum, has a market for itself. The only question is for how long? Not saying because of the competition, but because of the PPC architecture.

Just install AROS on your preferred x86 PC and live happy ... you don't need any Commodore company or any "Amiga" name/logos for this ...

A lot of people always claimed our Pegasos/SAM/AmigaOne/... IS NOT AMIGA. It will be funny when these people are all of a sudden happy with "this bog standard Intel PC IS AMIGA!" ...

What special about PowerPC?

Are you saying MAI's Teron reference design was better than the current Intel Calpella (for Nehalem) reference design?

Atleast AROS X86 has a working modern GPU 3D drivers...

The point is, if CommodoreUSA is a strong competitor (I have my doubts, but time will tell), it will be because it is offering a product more in line with target users needs.

If PPC Amigas are compelling products on their own merits, then they will sell. If CommodoreUSA bring more users and increased finances to the Amiga ecosystem then it's all good.

If CommodoreUSA support AROS financially, I will take them seriously. If they don't, f**k 'em, but let's give them the benefit of the doubt for now, we don't have anything to lose by doing so.

Hmmm... after carefuly thinking this over, I think they should just hire a dev team and develop AROS on their own + naturally they can still pay bounties for some of the work.

The reason being here is that it is unlikely, in my opinion, after having read democles' comment about AROS64, that the AROS community would do the right thing and cut connections with OS 3.1 for a future AROS release. That would mean C=USA getting stuck with AROS as it is today and then we have just a another pretty much useless OS for anything other then retro fun. Which would be a damn shame
