You have to understand, I'm not a hard core amiga fan. The news of Commodore and amiga being brought to x86 has made my day.

Its just that "Commodore" isn't the Commodore you seem to believe they are.
And AInc is not Amiga - they only have the right so sell licenses to this name.
As far as I understood it, only the classic line of Amiga computers can be called "Amigas" so far.

But this will most likely not be THIS community...

Amiga ≠ Commodore
Amiga ≠ x86

Yes, do that!
They will desperately need someone who writes some apps for them!
Best wishes and good luck!

If that bothers you in any way then I'm sorry...

Why should I be bothered if someone intends to write software for a new platform?

@Dandy

You seem to be bothered otherwise you wouldn't go on to write several posts to reply me...

As I have said numerous times, I have absolutely no problems with x86 Amigas and Ubuntu on them. That's all I have to say to reply to you.

And I think nobody has a problem with you or anybody else running Ubuntu in whatever branded PC you like. The problem is, this is an Amiga forum, for people interested in Classic or NG Amigas running AOS4.x/AOS3.x/MorphOS/AROS.

If you like to write about Ubuntu, go to an Ubuntu or Linux forum (I use Debian everyday, but don't post here unless it has something to do with my AmigaONE for example, and as that, Debian, not as the new AmigaOS which is not)

Using your logic PPC is also out of the loop, too. There was never a computer called Amiga that was shipped with PowerPC chip. Yet, there was a project that married X86 and AmigaOS blessed by Amiga, Inc. Amithlon.

For years I was saying that I brand "Amiga" whatever I feel worthy. You then said that it's not my call because there's a company that set up rules for that brand name. Now, when I play devil advocate and say that if CUSA got a deal with Amiga, Inc they are within the rights to use it, you guys spin on a dime and get all hippy on me: "You can, like, own a brand, man. It's an idea, man! We're true to the spirit of a brand, not the evil overlord."

You either like idea of Amiga and follow AROS, MorphOS or AmigaOS4 or you follow Amiga and you're happy to get yourself a cheap PC.

Where do you take the confidence from that people will jump up and rush to get a plain x86 box with a Commodore label sticked on it?

People buy MSI, ASUS, ACER, Toshiba, Sony..., branded "just PCs" over the much cheaper no-name PC stuff.

But will they buy "the the much cheaper no-name PC stuff" at an higher price, just because it is labled "Commodere"?

That's the question.
For me e.g. the "Commodore" name stands for unprecedented mismanagement, arrogance, incompetence and failure.

Plus, the C64 community and memory is still very much alive and many of those people(some, what, 20-30 million) might feel nostalgic enough to buy it.

I still fail to see WHY they should buy a system they most likely already have (aside from the form factor).

Quote:

WolfToTheMoon wrote:

IMHO, why not? Out of those 20-30 million ex C64 users they should be able to sell 50 000 easily,

I'm afraid you're overoptimistic.

Why should I as a newcomer feel inclined to choose a Commodore over any other x86 PC? And no, the label "Commodore" is no decision criterion for me.

I still have to be convinced that "mainstream people" care for the "Commodore"-sticker at all...

While it is certain that these "several thousand AmigaOS users" will run AmigaOS on their new machines (Sam or X1000), it still remains to be seen how many of your "several hundred million users" care for AROS at all.

It may be some feel attracted by the AIO formfactor - but my estimation is that they will be a minority.

EDIT:
Fixed quoting...

I have suggested to them to think about something in line of Apple store, where Ubuntu(and possibly AROS but I doubt it) Commodore-only applications and other merchandise could be sold.

We already have somthing like the Apple store - just that it is for free:
AmiNet
Os4Depot

@all ppl going on and on and on about the 'yay great new commodore amiga woohoo'

This is an Amiga forum for computers that run AmigaOS, AROS or MorphOS not Ubuntu, Debian etc...

An Amiga is defined by its roots. Its roots are firmly embedded with its operating system which has always been called the Amiga Operating System - or in short-hand AmigaOS.

All Commodore is offering is a bog-standard PC that can run a multitude of operating systems that it (Commodore/A-Inc whoever) has zero control over.

And the official Amiga Operating System which is what makes an Amiga an Amiga will not run on it; so hence it can't truly be an Amiga. Full stop, end of story.

If you buy one of these then the only amiga-like operating system that you can run is the Amiga Research Operating System that is stuck firmly in the 20th Century.

If you buy one of these and look forward to a great Amiga-like experience you are in for a shock; a big let down.

I already have and pretty much all of my friends run branded PCs or laptops(ok, laptops are all branded but by this I mean brands like Toshiba, Sony... that is, somewhat more expensive brand products).

Quote:

For me, it is a lot of nice memories from the late 80s and early 90s. I don't care what they as a company did, my C-64 was used by the entire family and it was the first machine we ever bought. To this day I remember unpacking it, even if I was only 4 years old. My father started programming on the C64 and even I had some first steps playing with BASIC. Had numerous friends come by my house and we rocked Rick dangerous all day long

Now please, if you are not interested in x86 commodore or amigas, why go on a posting rampage to persuade me, others or yourself that I'm wrong. IMHO, you're just wasting yours and my time.

By the way, what new software for Ubuntu you have in mind?

I was thinking remake of popular old games(and new games), commodore/amiga styled themes/GUI(some of them retro), general applications.

Even if they don't do it(The Store), if the machines are a success and there is a market for something like this, I will open my own "CommodoreMarket"(offcourse, it will not be called exactly like that for legal reasons) and work from there. In that case, everything will probably be freeware as to avoid any legal repercussions and anybody will be free to contribute.

And how exactly is that meant to earn you money?

I specifically said if I do it, all will be freeware...

But why bother reading something, when you can pretend that you have and try to make a provocation out of it.

I don't need any extra money, thank you. Whatever I do, if I do, with these new commodores, will be purely for fun and good memories.

The Amiga, as we knew with the Amiga Classic, is dead.
It would have died even if Commodore hadn't gone bankrupt in 1994, cause the way C= was going to take in the long run, was the same as Apple: standard hardware+AmigaOS.
The Macintosh today is Mac OS.
The Amiga is AmigaOS.

Remove AmigaOS, and all that you have is a sticker.
