There is nothing stoping you from selling anything open source. You might be forced to provide source code. Selling AROS distro is OK, and even if it wouldn't be, you can always sell it as "service".

Something like: Linux is free, but I paid for RedHat? Maybe possible...

Yes, AROS license allows and encourages exactly that. The only thing IIRC the company is required is to submit any improvements/changes back into "ordinary" AROS code.

P.S: Somebody more knowledgeable with licences will probably tell you more deatails

@steril606

The APL is quite simple:

Recompile AROS, name it "NotC=OS" and release it closed source.

Changes you do must be given back, but every tiny bit that is "new" can stay closed source.

The Commodore name say something to people. It is a know name and known for great computers they made. Everything so called Amiga after them is not nice. There was a time Amiga was inventive. That was under Commodore. Now it is nothing.

Who cares what prosessor is used. X86 is the prosessor that is compatible with all OS systems. It is also the fastest and cheapest alternative for home marked last 10 years.

If they do this right they can do great things. I have belive in them. Most exiting news I seen in Amigaworld for years. Way to go CommodoreUSA.

They are not going for a niche market, they are trying to "mainstreamizise" it. You and I and Commodore USA all know a company cannot prosper on amiga market that is today alone. Several thousand users at the most. Why is that so hard to understand to some other people is beyond me.

They will be selling Win/Linux powered Commodore PCs/netbooks... and I'm guessing most of their profits will be coming that way. The Amiga business is probably a long term pet project into reviving the brand with some new ideas.

There will be no profits. The PC market is brutally cost-conscious. Low-volume, custom-case designs, probably hand-assembled using low-volume component purchases spells trouble.

Here is how the company should be run:

1. Cost out products
2. Look at possible market penetration using third-party assessments
3. Build products
3. Announce and have product ready to ship

What have C=USA done?

1. Announce product (the easy part)

What have C=USA apparently not done?

1. Cost out products (hard)
2. Build products (hard)
3. Market assessment (hard/expensive)

I reiterate - this looks bad in my opinion.

Does anyone remember the new "Commodore" PC company? Came on the scene about a year or two ago with fancy branded cases with typical PC guts. Where are they now? The market has already spoken.

Our American lawyers will take action against this.

This is blatant violation of the rights Hyperion Entertainment secured in the settlement agreement with Amiga Inc., Itec and Amino.

Oh, it seems HyperionMP hates Amiga.

CommodoreUSA has a good chance to win, keyboard case computers are commonly known as game computers, and the settlement allow Amiga Inc. to license the Amiga name for game related hardware.

The hardware is there.
Just build a case.
How difficult could that be.
I can not see why the brand "commodore" "amiga" should be so much more expensive than other brands.
It depends on what market they are after. low-end or high-end computer market.
Looks they are something in the middle to me.

What I think is great is that they show interest to the original Amiga consept.
That should mean a lot to us, that are still active.

What other alternative do they have than to use AROS as a Amiga like OS alternative ?

What they could do if they have the resources is to buy out Hyperion and morphOS join everyone and make the best AmigaOS ever seen.
Should be quite possible.

Think if they had all people from amigaworld working towards 1 goal. Not 3.

Is this Commodore USA even a legitimate company?

Will never happen... some egos here are too big to fit under one roof.

There are several options

option 1. Commodore USA does what is saying it will do... The consequences would be probably a dead end for PPC amigas and OS.

option 2. Commodore USA fails in it's plans and PPC remains the only official amiga platform which sentences it to extinction.

option 3. Pancakes!

Either way, PPC is here today, gone tomorrow.

They could go into partnership with hyperion and pay them to do a port??

I dont see why people are excited about this #### project when it is nothing but a pc running AROS.
There is already plenty of hardware to run AROS on, only difference is that this one will have the commodore"probably illegal" name.

I am sure this turns out to be vaporware anyways, as the company looks like it is run by a bunch of kids. There absolutely nothing professional about this company.

Their website makes amiga.com look like a pro site in comparision.

I agree with you. The Amiga was setup by people with vision, and a highly technical skill. They had a real product in their hands.

The only thing CommodoreUSA is about is trying to seduce (non Amiga fanatic) people with a product that has no inner complexity at all. Just a PC + Aros, that's it.
There is no design team, no technical skilled people behind it... nothing only a website (which isn't much professional though).

This company is a joke and tries to play with 'marketing' and want see how people respond.
How many Commodore (re)startups where successful?

They claim 5 million visitors and 270.000+ responses. I cannot find any traffic to this website on Alexa.

Is Mr Bill McEwen behind it? It feels like the same amaturistic way of management.

I find it an insult on our hobby actually.
Hail to the NatAmi!

ask them(Hyperion) here and now what they think of x86 AmigaOS 5.x? I think we all know the answer on that

@eXec

Are you just beeing funny or you dont know you can run AROS on x86 already.... without an amigasticker or maybe that will make you feel better :)

I feel sorry for the AROS devs if this comes true and if commodore changes it to the way AROS devs dont like it to be. But future will tell.

Uhg, not that tired old bed time story again. Truely painful.

I like AROS, but does this feel like a vengful stab from A.Inc at Hypersion to anyone else but me?

Nah, probably not. That might imply that they're clever.

This will confuse already confused market and potential customers.

Any sign that they are contacting Hyperion (or other way around)?

Sure it feels like a vengful stab. What else , specially in these times when X1000 and new SAM time is to arrive. This all makes it even more complex then it was with mos/os4/aros/classic/natami etc. What has amiga inc done for us all these years except selling some old games on their page.

@Thread

I don't know if this is good or bad news yet. hahaha I think the popcorn comment I saw from Ben is really quite valid now

My reply to my friend was WOW and that's it. Then I posted it here. I am still rebounding.
I was e-mailed this from a friend who only knows my interest in AMIGA because I buy old, cheap ones and get them working if I can for interested people.

Maybe this is the end of AMIGA, maybe it can't survive another exchange.

Then again, if it makes AMIGA a computer for the people once again that is affordable, I don't see that as bad.

My concerns with AROS are far from few.
The serious lack of compatibility of legacy AMIGA apps.
The need for a integrated 68kx86 JIT interpreter.
Memory subsystem could use an overhaul. Multi-user support, multi cpu etc.. RADEON driver?? Still, perhaps this will help all that get developed! maybe they can help if they have some $ to spend and want the OS that ran on it to continue.

Maybe they can strike a deal with Hyperion?? if that comment about legal action gets dropped after discussions with them. Maybe OS4 will get a port????? is that even possible?!?!

I don't know! it is kind of exciting for what it possibly, potentially could mean.
Trying to remain optimistic here! I have seen way to much bad for AMIGA, maybe this is good, just maybe!

I watch with interest.

I feel AROS would do well with a change. Use for example emumiga to run legacy Amiga software. If they want to sell serious computers with AROS on it, then IMHO, it needs a big upgrade that would probably break compatibility with previous versions and software.

Things that are needed

new GUI
SMP
VM
New file system
new APIs
x86-64 support, drivers....

it's a LOT of work.

As to AROS devs, they can still choose to develop AROS in whichever direction they feel like going.
