@BigBentheAussie

Glad to hear that you guys actually seem to be considering the business aspect of things. So far what the only non-scammers we've gotten have been mostly starry-eyed dreamers without a clue. I can only count four entities in the past ten years who had their #### straight.

That said, while I get that you want to keep the older fans happy, you've said that you have bigger fish to fry (hence the $30mil ad campaign). Can I ask how you're planning to differentiate a Commodore PC from eg a Dell? putting them in tan breadboxes will get you some sales (especially if you can bundle C64 Forever), but that's only going to push a few thousand boxes, maybe in the 5 digits but definitely not 6. Long term how are you planning on answering someone who asks "why should I buy a Commodore rather than a Dell?" (or Alienware, if you're going after the high end)

@All

The news of the Commodore has been received well in the Community. Never before (as I've seen) have so many been positive to a newcomer. I think it's because this actor has financiella muscle and drive. The news, which is great news, have come up with shortly after each other.
This is new to our little part of the world called the Amiga Community. Previously, we have been accustomed to long periods of action that often ended in nothing. Finally, we may see something big coming.

If Commodore doing everything right now, it will be a win-win situation.
Commodore Amiga is selling its more than perhaps the original Amiga sold in its time. This will increase interest PowePC Amiga. Commodore will thus increase interest in Hyperion products.
Both have their place in the market!

For it to work, it would be best to AmigaOS4.x was ported to x86 and it came installed in new Commodore Amiga.
Unless it can be Aros (or otherwise) to develop into an x86 product with real Amiga feeling. Ideally should Commodore hire someone known origin developers from Amiga Workbench for this project or to Aros.

All in all:
Commodore MUST have an operating system that people can call for the original AmigaOS in a direct line.

Retro Amiga hardware or operating system is not something that endures, it ends up just on the shelf of cute things there people on to watch and smile a little.

Commodore must therefore succeed in bringing the message that this is a REAL Amiga. I think they have the greatest chance of success since 1994. This should also Hyperion rejoice at sg and start porta AmigaOS4.x especially for the Commodore Amiga machine.

Technical:
Commodore Amiga machine must obviously include an electrical circuit that makes the OS only runs on this machine. I do not want to see other PCs running the Amiga operating system.

Soon you may have two Amiga systems to choose from:
1st PC-Amiga a cheaper mass-produced for mass
2nd PPC Amiga an expensive special produced for the inner clique

What is needed for this to be true?
1st Porting OS4.x to x.86
2nd Agreement between Hyperion and Commodore

Go ahead and pester the two players!

Do you read the same community websites as me?

With OS4 on x86, the PowerPC line will be effectively dead. Who would buy AmigaOne PowerPC, if AmigaOne x86 would be 3 times faster and 3 times less expensive?

Yes.

Not necessary.

I find 4-5 positive, it is about 400-500% more than in previous news of the same nature. But I read the mood as positive among those who always write down everything that is available as a bit less negative now. I sense a change of culture ....

Hobbyists/geeks to whom it would make a difference whether the underlying architecture is x86 or PowerPC. How big a market can that be, I don't know, but may be enough for small companies to release something.

@ruben

We shall see once the X1000 in on sale(if ever?), but I'm not expecting big numbers.

@WolfToTheMoon

Initial production run of the X1000 being 250 units is not very encouraging. Even the OpenPandora guys managed to sell out a first batch of 4000 units and are on to the second one.

Personally I have an emotional thing for PowerPC from the Phase5 days, so I'd like to see Amiga developments on that line being continued, but I'm not too hopeful.

Seems as if Amiga Inc, is more involved in this than what is being said.

@ruben

Yeah, it's too expensive...

I'd be more interested in Atari FireBee if I was going for a custom hardware. 68k compatible, programmable FPGA onboard(one could softcode custom amiga chips just like they did for Atari), ColdFire 266 MHz. Not a speed demon, but still very interesting. And "only" 600(+VAT) euros. I know, there's also Natami, but somehow I prefer the FireBee solution.

Emphasis on the quotation marks there

@linnar

Very generic press release style sentence, too abstract to read something into it I think...
or maybe not

You can have SAM for 600 EUR... with much faster CPU.

However, FireBee is nice and interesting project.

I think part of the Amiga survivors from the past will never leave PPC. The market for PPC Amiga is a maximum of 1000 persons likely to be fewer. If there is a credible x86 Amiga PPC can maybe get up to 3000 users. Larger than this is not the market for this product. We must remember that there are 2-3 times more expensive stuff with only 0, xxxx1% of the number of computer programs that you have access to all computer programs that exist. It's too bad exchange. Therefore, stop the client base in a few thousand.

If AmigaOS4.x ported to a PC-Amiga, the Amiga a real chance to get number of customers approaching a million. which can also PPC Amiga increase to 20-30000 customers.

Unfortunately, probably Hypeions selfishness in the way of such development. Hope I'm wrong on Hyperion!

Ach! (faceslap) Oy!

The solution is simple. Start a bounty to have full time paid programmers port the OS
to the hardware of your choice.

Simple.

Or, only allow the OS programmers to eat 1 can of beans per week until the job is done. Then
they get paid for their work ( minus the cost of the beans ).

OK! So now we have a real plan. Who's with me

I was with you until you made the cost of the beans retroactive. heh.

I'd go with that too, but Hyperion is not willing to go x86 and neither is the MorphOS team.

without their approval, bounties are useless.

And frankly, when(if) AROS gets improved next year, there will be no need for a x86 port of AmigaOS. The only thing left that will be worth some pennies will be the name.

Wrong.

All they require is a compelling reason to do so.

Somebody 'planning' to put name stickers on plastic is not a compelling reason.

Well, whatever it may be... I'd be more pleased if they stayed out of this business... OS4 would still be outdated on x86 and it's nothing but a waste of time and money to get involved in that. Especially since AROS could soon be made more advanced then OS4 if you're into retro OS. And then the only thing left in Hyperion's basket is the trademark AmigaOS.

If X1000 fails and Hyperion is forced financially to close their Amiga-related business, then Amiga Inc gets the AmigaOS name back.

I'd say hyperion has more to loose by not going x86, but I don't really care. Their choice...

Exactly. And they don't have one. I think they figure that since the OS is not interesting for the average buyer anyway, might as well keep things as they are, where at least they get a few bucks for existing users.
I understand their position really. I'm not sure I'd port OS4 to x86 if I was running their show either...
