Hi,

I have a new version of MEncoder ready; besides the generic binary, I have compiled (just by using -mcpu flags in gcc actually) specific ones for G3, G4 and 440 CPUs. This is not a port derived from the recent mplayer-amigaos project, it's something I have been working on for some months on my own. I have already tested the G4 binary on my system, could anyone with a Sam440/Sam440-Flex or a MicroA1 (G3) test the others please? Here are the archives (direct downloads):

mencoder_440.zip

mencoder_g3.zip

You'll also need the test video here:
576p25_blue_sky.zip

Note that I had to rename the archives to .zip due to the filehosting service limitation, the files are actually LHA ones. Command lines to be run are inside the archives. One thing I forgot is that you will need to set a high stack before running mencoder, e.g. "stack 10000000". For comparison, here are the results on my machine:

MPEG-2 encoder - libmpeg2
Generic: Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 5.83fps Trem: 0min 1mb A-V:0.000 [3428:0]
Altivec: Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 7.75fps Trem: 0min 1mb A-V:0.000 [3428:0]
Altivec G4: Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 7.81fps Trem: 0min 1mb A-V:0.000 [3428:0]

MPEG-4 encoder - libavcodec
Generic: Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 9.09fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:0.000 [911:0]
Altivec: Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 9.31fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:0.000 [911:0]
Altivec G4: Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 10.13fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:0.000 [911:0]

MPEG-4 encoder - Xvid
Generic: Pos: 65.4s 1637f (100%) 25.90fps Trem: 0min 13mb A-V:0.000 [1751:0]
Altivec: Pos: 65.4s 1637f (100%) 25.68fps Trem: 0min 13mb A-V:0.000 [1751:0]
Altivec G4: Pos: 65.4s 1637f (100%) 25.90fps Trem: 0min 13mb A-V:0.000 [1751:0]

And yes, the Altivec version is lower than the generic one in the Xvid test, I'll have to investigate on why.

You can of course post the results here btw.

Thanks!

Micro @ 800MHz

Generic
Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 8.26fps Trem: 0min 1mb A-V:0.000 [3428:0]
Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 18.03fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:0.000 [911:0]
Pos: 65.4s 1637f (100%) 21.05fps Trem: 0min 13mb A-V:0.000 [1752:0]

I noticed that the "MPEG-2 encoder - libmpeg2" conversion doesn't honor the re-scaling option. The output video should be 720x576, but is unchanged at 320x240.

The "MPEG-4 encoder - Xvid" convertion video is scrabbled in DvPlayer & mplayer at 176x144. If I change the scale to w=720:h=576, the video plays ok, but the conversion is quite slow.

Almost forgot, the mencoder_g3 archive seems to have 2 copies of mencoder included. For the sake of dialup users, you should only include one. Didn't we have this conversation before?

Nice work! As I have a uA1 I'll try out the G3 version. If all goes well I'll be able to enable some new format support already built into my SimpleSub video titling program. In addition, I've been waiting for a more up to date mencoder in order to write a GUI which uses it to perform different video effects, like rotate, mirror, sharpen, blur, etc. It might also support joining multiple video clips, or I might make that a seperate application. In any case, I've been waiting for a more up to date mencoder and hopefully this will fill the bill.
Thanks for your work on mencoder and hoefully soon MPlayer as well,

I used the 440 binary the 2nd time because I know there is a secret reason
why it was included

Not sure what's up with the last test? I had to remove the greater than symbols
or was it less than... oops

also, I stopped using stacks with 0's in it a long time ago, so hope that
doesn't have any bearing on anything... eg I stacked 11111111

btw, I decided I'd play the movie files '576p25_blue_sky_mpeg4.avi' is not a rotating sky
but a hypnotic trance enducing animation

Ok, I think my description has been confusing: what I'd need is that each test is run twice, the first time with the generic "mencoder" executable and the second with the optimized "mencoder_440" or "mencoder_g3" version, so that I can compare their performance on the same computer, like Slayer did.

@sundown
That's the reason why there are two binaries, you need them both :)
The "w=720:h=576" part in the "MPEG-2 encoder - libmpeg2" command line is not a scaling option, it's an indication of the size of the input video, this is needed since the video is in a RAW format hence there's no header indicating its size. The output video should be at the same size, strange that yours has been scaled down...
The Xvid video is replayed wrongly here as well. The command line itself comes from the HD Videobench benchmarks (http://alvarez.site.ac.upc.edu/hdvideobench/), this video might trigger the mangled video problem other users have noticed in MPlayer, I'll see if this can be confirmed as a bug.

@ktadd
Good to hear about the new SimpleSub version, good luck with your project, please let me know if you need any help regarding MEncoder.

@Slayer
The last test's line doesn't have any "greater/less than" symbol here...

@all
Looking at Slayer's results, it seems that I can ditch the 440 version, seems like the optimized 440 libs in newlib already do a good job in supporting this CPU.

@Varthall

Results from uA1 G3 800MHz: (output video sent to ram: since my drives are running in best PIO mode)

mencoder G3 results:
mpeg-2 (libmpeg2): Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 5.76fps Trem: 0min 1mb A-V:0.000 [3428:0]
mpeg-4 (libavcodec): Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 9.64fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:0.000 [911:0]
mpeg-4 (Xvid): Pos: 65.4s 1637f (100%) 19.45fps Trem: 0min 13mb A-V:0.000 [1752:0]

Output of libmpeg2 and libavcodec plays fine in both DVPlayer and MPlayer.
Output of Xvid plays scrambled in both DVPlayer and MPlayer. It also plays scrambled playing on Windows XP with VLC media player.

mencoder standard results:
mpeg-2 (libmpeg2): Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 5.67fps Trem: 0min 1mb A-V:0.000 [3428:0]
mpeg-4 (libavcodec): Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 9.24fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:0.000 [911:0]
mpeg-4 (Xvid): Pos: 65.4s 1637f (100%) 19.10fps Trem: 0min 13mb A-V:0.000 [1752:0]

Output of libmpeg2 and libavcodec plays fine in both DVPlayer and MPlayer.
Output of Xvid plays scrambled in both DVPlayer and MPlayer. It also plays scrambled playing on Windows XP with VLC media player.

mencoder G3 is slightly faster than the standard mencoder. Not sure if it's worth a seperate build.

Note that as sundown says the mpeg-4 libavcodec video command does result in a 320x240 video but that's what would be expected since the scale filter command, "-vf scale=320:240" option is used.

@Varthall

The result on AmigaOne G4 seems a bit low. On Pegasos2/MorphOS with a r32620 build, i get:

MPEG4 (libavcodec)
Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 29.12fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:0.000 [911:0]

MPEG4 (xvid)
Pos: 65.4s 1637f (100%) 32.49fps Trem: 0min 13mb A-V:0.000 [1751:0]

MPEG2
Pos: 4.0s 101f (100%) 17.31fps Trem: 0min 1mb A-V:0.000 [3428:0]

@Varthall

I also wondered about the two versions.
I tried both but the results were pretty much identical.
Which is why I posted only one set.

Cheers.

Why are you running your drives in best PIO mode?

Owning a µA1 too, (UBoot Prefs:)I have set the HD (Unit 0) at UDMA 5, with IRQ ticked. At Unit 2 I have a DVD/CD running at UDMA 4 and IRQ ticked as well.
Any particular reason you use PIO mode?

Just curious

Don't you think using a superior operating system and superior hardware is cheating a little?

@Ruud

I know it wasn't really the expected kind of answer to this thread, but it still gives a hint something's wrong (and thus it can help).

Mencoder is indeed a quite generic program, not depending much on the OS itself (except altivec support being enabled or not), and a Pegasos2/G4 shouldn't be that faster than an Aone G4@800. Yet, we see twice faster (or more) results with libavcodec on Pegasos2/G4.

My best guess would be that altivec is currently not enabled in libavcodec.

The greater or less symbol was in the space on the following;

(13824 38016)

I had to remove it though because it prevented the rest of the post being displayed... weird... DO NOT EXPLOIT this

@oldfart

use PIO for you DVDRW, it's for the best... In my experience my DVDRW actually performs better than max UDMA and I'm pretty sure optical devices don't even utilise or interface with it... I don't know why I remember this I just do

Ok, answer to your off-topic then.

In case you wouldn't have understood it yet, when abnormal results like this are reported, beyond the initial p*ss contest, it also allows to see the bigger picture and ultimately, the performance issues have a chance to be fixed, when they're exposed. Better than staying confined in your little world and wearing eyes and ears covers...

Remember IDE DMA on Peg2, memory benchmarks or RAM handler performance issues with OS4 (won't mention 3D because it's hopeless there)? Strangely they were fixed/improved after these benchmarks were posted. But you'll surely tell me these issues were perfectly known already and that benchmarks were not needed, right? :)

No, they're needed. Very much so, it's the "initial p*ss contest" I don't like.

Why are you running your drives in best PIO mode?

Could be his drive.
The ability to use and/or level of UDMA to use is discussed in older posts from @sg2. Worth a search and a read if you have spare time.
Not only do drives vary, but we run into the cases of unfixed XE users giving general advice that does not apply to fixed XE or Micro users.
There are those who swear DVD drive should be run in PIO while others are using a variety of UDMA modes.
Bottom line is that there is no absolute general advice that fits here.

Added: was also mentioned that sii card could use higher setting of UDMA than onboard VIA. (in general)
