The registration for Aminet.net appears to have expired. Clicking on it takes you to a Russian website.

Anyone have a clue?

@Darth_X

Strange... takes me through to a Network solutions page in both Russian and English, stating the site either needs renewal or can be backordered...........

@jd997uk

I get the same as you in http://main.aminet.net or http://aminet.net. Half Russian and half English site.

Looks like somebody forgot to renew the domain name: http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/aminet.net - the site may still work for some due to DNS propagation delays, but doesn't work here either (Google DNS).

Works here, but maybe not for long. For the record "aminet.net" resolves to 69.163.220.116 , so as a temporary work-around people can force their machine to resolve amnet.net to that IP address (on AmigaOS4 this is easy to do).

Have a look at it's status here:
http://reports.internic.net/cgi/whois?whois_nic=aminet.net&type=domain

Has anyone contacted the Aminet admin(s)? It looks like they might have a small window to get this fixed, before someone else can grab the domain name?

I already sent an Email to the Acting International CEO of Aminet Gmbh. Christoph Gutjahr.

I asked him to cast either a Raise Dead spell or a Dispel Russians spell.

I just noticed the WhoIs says "Expiration Date: 15-aug-2012", which is next year!?! Wonder why there is a problem now then.

@ddni
Are we sure the server hasn't been hacked, and is redirecting (only some!) people to another site? It might be hiding that redirection using an IFrame...

FWIW, I am using OWB.

@ddni

if you just type 69.163.220.116 into your browser it gets redirected to aminet.net so you need to add the domain to you internet prefs.

but in the URL you posted it says also:

NOTICE: The expiration date displayed in this record is the date the
registrar's sponsorship of the domain name registration in the registry is
currently set to expire. This date does not necessarily reflect the expiration
date of the domain name registrant's agreement with the sponsoring
registrar. Users may consult the sponsoring registrar's Whois database to
view the registrar's reported date of expiration for this registration.

look at the url provided by jd997uk in post #10

If you check closer WHOIS record you notice that domain is on hold...

Registrant:
Pending Renewal or Deletion
P.O. Box 430
Herndon, VA. US 20172-0447

Domain Name: AMINET.NET

Record expires on 15-Aug-2011.

So the domain has expired but is still on quarantine on network solutions.

Also from redirection page...
"If you are the current registrant for this domain name and wish to continue the registration on the domain, you must immediately contact the domain name provider and renew the domain name to ensure the name is not deleted."

So no "They are hacking us!!!" conspiracys...

Network Solutions for those who don't know what it is...

@broadblues

I added 69.163.220.116 to my hosts file. I thought this was what was required.

If you click on the topleft 'aminet.net', you'll get http://searchmagnified.com/popunder?domain=aminet.net&fp=%2ByNLXhgppO%2B6WL1zVrcdmt6Gb1hbnB71N5QZrHigd8UWTGoMk3JqNVDNFIW3I2axvWkDDFhVk3TauwXEXx9MoiW0W%2Fk%2FedCH9a9QB3FXTuIO353d9b1e2HEZaDSh4%2F4554wCsoxrqAku8H7nsuYaHzmslAQjPhNuHEaU1ECFbo4%3D

which WOT blocks and says the site has a poor reputation. If you continue, you get some more russian links using aminet.net.

Edit: Looks like it's expired anyway. Didn't they know this in advance ?
