Any such thing as a SII0680 + wi-fi PCI card?

Hi!

I have a micro A-1 and thus am limited to one PCI expansion slot. My case also only allows one card even if I were to try to use a multi-extender card. Anyway, I really want to have both wi-fi and a SII0680 controller in my micro A1.
Is there such a thing as a single PCI card that contains both a SII0680 IDe controller AND a wi-fi card in one? That would be such a wonderful thing.....

Thanks,

Scott

@scabit

A quick google would suggest there isn't, and I would be very surprised if there were, to be honest.

Good question. I also have a micro and feel limited by the single PCI slot. Have any micro owners ever found a PCI riser card that works that would enable multiple PCI cards to be used?

One thing I did come across was a PCI splitter,

I was looking at a PCIe-1 splitter to break out the single PCIe-1 slot on a sam460 and use 3 PCIe-1 cards
in my own custom case bracketing instead.

You may want to consider one of these options if they function with the A1 or other "mini" PPC Amigas

@scabit

Use a sii0680 pci card and a universal wifi internet adapter (like netgears WNCE2001) that connects to the ethernetport. You don't need drivers for the A1 and you will get support for wpa2-psk encryption.

Wow! What a great idea! I hadn't thought of that. Is it difficult to hook up such a device to a micro A1? I am clueless about ethernet stuff.

Thanks,

Scott

It's easy. It took me 5 minutes to get it up and running.

very nice piece of HW...
I had the same issue with my uA1 and this is a good solution!!

one additional question, does it come with plug-cable or usb-power cable in the box (or both of them)

I have disabled back usb ports (due to bug in hw/ or latest os4.1 versions) and plugging to usb for supply would be not suitable

@AlexDran and scabit,

This is a very good suggestion and something I have used many times when playing with various operating systems which support Ethernet on my hardware but not wireless. This includes a hackintosh desktop.

I have just today been setting up an old Belkin router as a wireless client bridge to connect a morphos power mac g4 to my network using the Ethernet port.

If you can't get an appropriate unit as recommended above, there are many wireless access points out there that can be set as a wireless client bridge or gaming adapter.

If all else fails, take a look at http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices -almost all of the devices listed there should support dd-wrt v24 sp2 and therefore will allow the hardware to be set up as a client bridge. This is exactly how I have done it with the Belkin f5d7231-4 v2000 and it works really well.

Once you have the hardware configured, plug it in to the power socket and connect an Ethernet cable from your uA1 in to the router/access point and you should be able to get an ip address.

Hope that helps

Mike

Slightly OT, but possibly useful anyway:

The IDE controller is not called SIL0680, but SiI0680 (i.e. a capital s, a lower case i, and a capital i). The company behind it was Silicon Image, hence the Si for Silicon and the I for Image.

It is a very common misunderstanding, and usually harmless, but in this case it could have influenced the quality of a Google search.

Note also that the OS4 driver for the chipset is consequently named sii0680ide.device (double i). Not sil0680ide.device (i followed by lower case L).

Best regards,

Niels

Both of them and a short ethernet cable - if we are talking about the Netgear WNCE2001.

The PCI card can support WPA2-PSK as well.

@nbache

I stand corrected! Updated title and content to show SII, not SIL. My mistake.

Thanks,

Scott

If you can solve the wireless externally then A better card would be a dual 0680/USB. That way you could have both fast IDE and fast USB2 support!

Do you have a link?
I googled but didn't find anything.

@Swoop

I just recently put a Koutech KW-5200 from Newegg in my A1XE. It's a combo NEC USB2 and SiI3512 on one PCI card.

I mostly expected it not to work, and would need some hacking. But, after some card switching, I can report that it does seem to work. There is another card next to it (second ethernet) which is now not recognized, so there is still something borked with the PCI device enumeration, but both the USB2 and SATA are functional.

Edit: Proof!

Depends on whether there is anything new since the last post by the beta testers:

As you can see, the VIA chipset on the card I have working in one of my AmigaOnes (albeit not Micros)

Albeit meaning "of course not".
