I am curious of what career types make up the user community. I was amazed when I watched a show last night of how many NASA scientists and scientists in general grew up watching and were inspired by Star Trek.

I am curious to see if a majority of us share similar careers.

I am a project manager in IT.

I spent over 10 years in the games industry as a code monkey, and for various reasons got rather fed up, so when I was made redundant, I used my redundancy money to set myself up as a small games company of my own. That turned out to be impossible because there's just no way for a small company like mine to succeed in the current industry (we tried nearly everything), so I redirected my company to an online retro computing store.

I'm still building it up slowly but surely.... at the moment I'm still concentrating on the Spectrum but the Amiga is very much on my list of platforms to specialise in... the only problem being the absurd prices of Amiga hardware!

Note I'm not aiming to compete with AmigaKit - they do a fantastic job already - I'm more into dealing with the "pre-loved" section of the market - though I do intend to become useful repairing Amigas like I do Spectrums etc. - as well as building up a stock of working disk games, using WHDLoad to put them onto CD in case the original disks go bad.

Hmm... that turned into more of a plug than I intended. But it is my background, and you did ask. :)

@Spirantho

That's one of the things I like about Amigaworld.net, they don't mind plugs so long as they are related to Amiga subject matter and are very open to various topics of conversation.

The only thing that is not tolerated is trolling. This has to be my favourite board.

@A500

Even though I've been into computers since my first VIC 20 back in 80/81, I've never worked with them as part of my jobs in any shape or form...

My two main occupations were Time served Carpenter & Time Served Stone Mason which to be honest in those working environments didn't lead to much talk of computers amongst my work colleagues, especially back in the early 80's...

Try having a conversation with a bricky or fellow carpenter about coding in assembly language on a VIC 20, C64 or Amiga at lunchtime and apart from the blank stares the conversation swiftly changes to football & beer...

@A500

I'm an engineer, working on the design, manufacture and support of automated equipment for hospital labs... For me that covers CAD, mechanical and electronic design and development, firmware work, validation and customer support. Kinda covers a wide range of functions, since it's quite a small and focussed business with quite complicated and sophisticated products.

I was into the Amiga long before I got into this particular career path though - for me it was the obvious choice at the time for a tinkerer like myself...

@500:

Studied to become an automotive engineer so, while living in the Netherlands, that means that the career started as a CAD-draftsman for DAF trucks. I managed to make it into an engineer. Now, since september this year I'm a consultant for PTC products (mechanical engineering software) filling the days with training new CAD users and implementing CAD/PLM software for customers.

@Franko

I too got in with the Vic 20... a computer for $70 even then was cheap!

I was lucky enough to work with Amigas in college in the video production area. I think Amigas are the reason I could not escape computers. They are certainly the reason I am where I am today :p

From: Behind dikes, on seabottom. Netherlands, that is. More exact: Flevoland.

I teach radio-technique (how to deal with professional recorders [Marantz] and editingsystems [Dalet] and broadcaststudios)) at a School for Journalism in the Netherlands. Use Windows for that. Before this I was teaching televisiontechnique, at the same school, with Macs / FinalCut.

That school is also the first place where I became involved with computers, some 20 years ago. That was an A2000 with BroadcastTitler, used for making titles in tv-broadcastings.

@A500

Started out in computers in the USAF as ground radio communications in 1977. Many of the big (10KW and above) analog radio communications systems became computer controlled by 1985. Got my first C64 in '84. After leaving the USAF in 1990 (and heavily influenced by IBM) I was in IT for banking systems till 2008 when everything collapsed over here in the states. From 2003 to 2008 I did the same thing that that bitman did for a big bank (not Lego - but dang that is cool bitman!). Since '08 I have operated my own business here... http://www.prolaptopshop.com That has gone very well. I got my first Amiga 500 in 2005 as I had always wanted one! I now have many Amiga computers and just got my Sam460EX system. I really love my A1200 the best though!

Wow... where did you manage to buy a Vic 20 for 70 bucks...

My first one was around £199 and that didn't even include the datasette (I had to wait for the following weeks wages before I could buy one) spent the first week typing in basic programmes only to lose them every time I switched it off...

Still got my original VIC 20 and it's still in working order today...

My Original VIC 20...

@ rob_d

Guess you'll know what I'm talking about then...

Hey, with your skills and mine, why don't we design a house using the Amiga and build it ourselves, I could dig up some of the old boys who taught me as an apprentice to help out but most of them are too old to move anymore or dead...
